The SETI@home project administrators have a lot of problems to sort out, because they close the Classic application and have to migrate the large databases and a lot of users. This has created problems in the recent past and I am sure it will continue creating problems in the next tine.

I noticed when accessing http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/hosts_user.php that unless the user is logged in, it throws an error, and doesn't ask for the login details, i reported this the first time i noticed it and it was fixed, now it's cropped back up again

try it yourself log out then try accessing "your hosts"

Thank you for the report. I redirect it to the developers and Admins, don't know at the moment who produce it.
4) Message boards : BOINC Manager : CONNECTION FAILURE (Message 1379)
Posted 30 Nov 2005 by Jens Seidler
Post:
There are three known issues for the "connection failure". And when I talk about "connection failure" this means the connection between BOINC Manager (boincmgr.exe) and BOINC client (boinc.exe) and is here related only to the Windows platform.

With the BOINC 5.2.13 client (must be the same with 5.2.12) you start BOINC Manager in single or share install mode and normaly BOINC Manager should start the BOINC Client, but this failed.

Issue 1:

Your firewall is blocking the program start or the ports BOINC manager needs to start the boinc.exe program. Test this by shutdown your firewall and then start BOINC Manager.

Issue 2:

Other programs, i.e. Windows alg.exe (Application layer gateway) use the port 1043, which is reserved for BOINC. Then BOINC Manager is not able to start the boinc.exe program too. Youi may test this by open a DOS window, change to the BOINC directory and start boinc.exe. This should be succesfully and possible BOINC report in a message line to use the alternate port. You can then start BOINC manager and it should connect to boinc.exe.

Issue 3:

Boinc Manager and BOINC client use a password to protect the communication between them. Both try to find the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file with the password in the work directory. If you move and start BOINC Manager from a other place in the filesystem they may find different passwords and get a connection failure with a wrong password message.

Solution:

For issue 1. try to configure your firewall in a way that boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe can start other programs and communicate on all tcp ports on localhost.

For issue 2. the only solution is to install and use BOINC in service mode or (if you have enough knowledge) stop the other program using the BOINC port. A new BOINC release may fix this issue, but I don't know when it will be published.

For issue 3. be sure to start BOINC Manager form the install folder or be sure to have the same password file in both working directory.

As mentioned in the install screen, you should normally have no access tho the graphics and screen saver... but it's false, everything works well, I've just used the localsystem account and checked "allow the service to interact with the desktop"

That is not false, it is a security issue, because BOINC and the project applications are running then with system administrator privilegies. That is not a by BOINC supported policy. It works and it is you decision how high the risk should be. I personal use it too in this way on some not so interesting host.

Has anyone else ever seen this??? I've never heard of this dialog, on _any_ of the BOINC project boards I've been on...

It apears from time to time. It seems it has to do with the automatic connection type detection. It is to fix by setting the connection type to network (LAN) in the BOINC Manger Optiondialog.

I believe to remember a mail about this update long time ago, but I am not sure. May be it was the seti@home newsletter. But since 2002 this update and the end of SETI@home Classic is anounced in all boards, web pages and many news releaded to Berkeley and SETI@home.

And I know that a mailing and some info with the classic Client should happen too in the next time. I am not sure what happend if you have denied to get mail from SETI@home. I wouldn't care about this, but maybe Berkeley do. I don't know.

why is the user interface not working under projects?

That is a good question. because you wrote about SETI@spy, I believe you are using Windows as Operating System and I don't know any issue with Windows blocking this buttons.

BOINC only start the default browser, mostly the Internet Explorer, on my hosts for example the Firefox browser. My first(and at the moment only) idea is, that there is someething wrong with your configuration of the default browser.

How am I supposed to get help information if none of the help buttons work?

The best source for help on SETI@home and BOINC are the message boards on the SETI@home homepage. And there is a very good website with a lot of informations about BOINC and the projects (like SETI@home): BOINC wiki

How are you supposed to make changes Ie: preference changes

On the SETI@home website, as on all BOINC project websites, you will find link to the "Your account" area. There you can set your preferences. In BOINC wiki you may find a lot of information about the configuration, if you need it.

Any idea what happened on March 15 and why I was removed from the team I was on (I was like 35th place out of 400+ participants)

The migration from SETI@home Classic to SETI@home BOINC is a project specific thing, not a normal BOINC function. The SETI@home team has moved the existing SETI@home Classic accounts to BOINC in March 2005. This accounts will be updated after the 15. December 2005 to the last values. The BOINC credit system is different from the Classic system and so there is no transformation of WUs and CPU time, this is saved as frozen statistical information with the BOINC account. To use this migrated account, you have to get it on the SETI@home page. There is a link for SETI@home Classic users.

And the migrated account must be in the team, but as long as there are no BOINC credits collected on this account it is not to see on the team statistic. I think taht is the problem you write about.

Will my last 5 years work be reflected on BOINC someday or is that a will-o-the-wisp & gone forever?

Please see my above answer.

This has not been an intuitive transition and the folks in charge need a class in how to inform their volunteers about changes they need to know about.

I am sue they do their best, but it is more then difficulty and to much work for the less people. We all believe it should be working better, but thats all that is possible.

I mailed with Rom Walton (Developer of the BOINC Manager) about your report and he believe he got it fixed. He is searching for help to test this. He will send you a privat build of BOINC Manager with the fix, if you mail him at "rwalton at ssl.berkeley.edu".

Beside his problems with firewalls and proxies, which is really a complicated stuff, "gianmarco" run in a real bug. He described it as "can not save the settings, can not change the language, can not find the OK button". This is description of a bug on "older" Windows releases, where the RAS libaries where not installed by default. This bug is fixed in the newer 5.2.x releases.

The "localization updates" are what they claim to be. *lol* Many people spend a lot of time to translate all the new stuff to many languages from all over the world.

The "Usability enhancements" are special software support for people with handicaps. CPDN is together with british BBC working to produce a CD version of CPDN and BOINC software to be released for the public next year. And the BBC has a lot of rules a software must respect, including "Usability enhancements". For my feeling a very good improvement.

The 500 error is not clear to me at the moment. The major difference between 4.7x and 5.2.x is the usage of a open source libary for HTTP communication and no longer using self programmed functions. There may be the need for some tweaking this lib in special cases. Over all this lib curl is working good. But at the moment I don't know what the hell is the basic for a 500 error with boinc. Sorry.

I've checked my firewall, even disabled it, but that doesn't change what happens:
- When trying to connect to localhost, I get a connection failure
- When connecting 'remotely' to 192.168.0.4 in this case (the computer's own IP), the manager, etc, can connect.

Are you sure, your password in gui_rpc_auth.cfg is not empty and BOINC Manager is started from the BOINC install folder?

If another program is using port 1043, shouldn't the latter fail as well?

I have not so much experience with this problem, but normally I would say yes.

This happened on two computers, both are running Windows XP SP2, and in both cases it happened after upgrading to boinc 5.2.x and then rebooting the computer

I am running the 5.2.7 in different configuration on XP SP2 hosts too. No problems so far. Are you using XP home? And have you tried to install BOINC as Service. That is for my feeling the best way to use it on XP.

You get a connection failure too if the BOINC Daemon can not start. That can happen when you have wrong access rights for example. Possible there are some error messages in the BOINC install folder in the logfiles:

stderr.txt, stdout.txt, stderrdae.txt, stdoutdae.txt

I believe that in this thread are more then one problem mixed.

At first, please don't use a empty password file "gui_rpc_auth.cfg". There is a problem in release 5.2.7. You should have a least one char in the file. And don't forget to restart all BOINC programs after changing the password.

A "remote_hosts.cfg" file is only neeed if you want to connect from a different host then localhost.

The web connection between BOINC and the project servers and the GUI connection between BOINC and the BOINC Manager are two different things.

Web communication is done on port 80 and 443 (http and https), as with every web browser. If you have problems with this connection, check for router, proxy and firewall issues.

The GUI communication is done on port 1043 on localhost, which is reserved for BOINC. But not every time all programs respect this and sometime local firewalls block all communication on localhost too. If you get problems with this connection, check GUI password usage, firewall rules and other programs using the BOINC port.

Ok
Honza gaves me the tip on the CPDN forum: just delete the random string without deleting the file gui_rpc_auth.cfg and restart BOINC: the link to Boinc Manager on my desktop is working now.
Thanks to everyone for the quick help. :o)

I was thinking about such a solution, but as it worked in the past (I still didn't find time to look in the code) this may open the client for external connections. This is not a great risk behind a firewall, but may not be such a good idea if the BOINC ports are open to the internet. - But I am not sure about the current behavior.

I use as a work around a shell script that change to the BOINC install folder and then start the Manager there. There I do too a setting of the BROWSER environment variable, that I need to overcome the "default browser" problem on my linux host. And this script is then linked to the desktop.

Hi,
BOINC Manager tells me that I provided the wrong password to connect to localhost (or 127.0.0.1).
How can I fix the problem ? (I'm on Linux Mandriva and Suse 9.2)
It's probably related to the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file (there is a characters string in it), but I don't know what to do with it (I removed it, but to no avail).
I just want to connect to BOINC without entering any password when I connect to my different machines via BoincManager
Thanks

Edit: I tried to enter the string in the password box, but it doesn't work.

I believe BOINC Manager tried to read the file too. When I start BOINC Manager in the install folder it don't ask me for the password. If I start it from a other folder, or with a link on the desktop it ask for the password. AS I remember BOINC didn't set the work directory on start up.

There are two theories about this problem. One think it is a timing problem and trying to connect again to localhost may help. I personal believe it is mostly a conflict with other programs using the BOINC TCP port 1043.

There are reports about other programs using the BOINC ports and creating the problems you descibed. On my Windows XP (BOINC installed as service) netstat -ao show the ports and the processes using them:

TCP pc-doris:1365 pc-doris:0 LISTENING 3148
TCP pc-doris:1365 localhost:1043 ESTABLISHED 2680
TCP pc-doris:1043 pc-doris:0 LISTENING 2680
TCP pc-doris:1043 localhost:1365 ESTABLISHED 3148

You can check which program is behind a PID with the command:

tasklist /FI "PID eq 3148" /SVC
tasklist /FI "PID eq 2680" /SVC
