1) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Feature Requests & Need Info
Message 60906 Posted 13 Mar 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
Left-click to select first project in the list, press and hold Shift on the keyboard, left-click to select the last project in the list, click Update. And there is no reason to do it 10 times a day... Boinc automaticaly will time delay and sequence through the projects that are due for work. Is there any other reason to do updates of projects? Stats of work done and RAC only happen when work is validated. |
2) Message boards : Promotion : Is BOINC dead?
Message 60562 Posted 27 Feb 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
I don't think so. The major projects are here to stay (SETI, CPDN, Rosetta, Einstein, WCG, LHC/CERN, and Milkyway) to name a few. There are a few other projects that will continue to hang on by their fingernails. Another 40 to 50 projects will come and go. Some college ones are often run by undergrads with little IT backup and no way to pass the project on. Others are just individuals running on home systems. As long as it is cheaper and easier to do data analysis on home CPU/GPU, BOINC itself isn't going to disappear anytime in the foreseeable future. |
3) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC not downloading tasks as directed
Message 60497 Posted 23 Feb 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
Simple, your cache contains other projects that need your CPU/GPU to catch up. Setting a large cache is usually counter productive. Most project limit how much work units you can have in your cache. In SETI case that is 100/CPU/GPU. Also, projects with short deadline will be forced to be process first since your telling Boinc that you have a minimum 10 day cache. Be reasonable and set your cache to 2 or 3 and additional 1 day. You will find that things will work much better and Boinc will have an easier to time to follow your resource share setting. It will take Boinc several weeks to adjust to the new setting. BTW, SETI is currently in a WU drought. |
4) Message boards : Questions and problems : "Postponed: Please upgrade BOINC to the latest version" when I am already at the latest version?
Message 60400 Posted 18 Feb 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
Perhaps your should check the project forums. Specificly this thread Please upgrade message |
5) Message boards : Questions and problems : Only two tasks out of nine possible this morning
Message 60292 Posted 13 Feb 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
What system? Which Boinc version. Which project? There aren't any crystal ball here. |
6) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Tasks menu in BOINC Manager
Message 60199 Posted 9 Feb 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
Each task you fail to return correctly diminishes your allowed cache at that project with one task, all the way until your BOINC can only get 1 task per hardware instance per 24 hours. Not so much a punishment as protection for the project against an unattended rogue computer producing a bunch of errors month after month. It happens!!! You should look at your account from time to time to ensure you're producing valid results. |
7) Message boards : Questions and problems : Norton removed cudart32_32_16.dll
Message 60182 Posted 9 Feb 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
Just make sure you exempt Boinc and Boinc data folders from scan in the future. Don't expect anything to come from reporting false positive to AV companies. |

More like they are exporting the entire database. |

Anybody else notice the sort order in this forum does not quite work right? IFAIK, its always been that way if you only use refresh. You have to leave the forum and come back to stop the focus being on your last post. |
10) Message boards : Questions and problems : OSX BOINC 6.12.35 "you currently are not authorized to manage the client"
Message 59848 Posted 20 Jan 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
I'm not familiar with MAC OS compatibility but looking at the download page, I think you may have the wrong version for your system. The one I highlighted seem to me to be a better fit. Mac OS X (Power PC or 32-bit Intel) Version 10.4.0+ 6.12.35 Recommended version (standard GUI) Download (6.71 MB) 11 Aug 2011 6.12.35 Recommended version (Unix command-line version) Download (1.00 MB) 11 Aug 2011 6.6.36 Older version (standard GUI) (works on OS 10.3.9 - OS 10.5.8) Download (6.06 MB) 10 June 2009 6.6.36 Older version (Unix command-line version) (works on OS 10.3.9 - OS 10.5.8) Download (1.20 MB) 10 June 2009 I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will come along to advise. |
11) Message boards : Questions and problems : Weird issue with starting just downloaded high priority WUs
Message 59751 Posted 17 Jan 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
Also, unless you run with <cpu_sched_debug> and at least 7.4.28, you won't see that tasks run high priority anymore. This because of a change to 7.4.23 that had: Manager: omit ", high priority" from task status. This makes it sound like BOINC is running the job at high OS priority. [RANT] To me a very annoying change since only a small percentage of users know about OS priority and should know the difference. [/RANT] |
12) Message boards : Questions and problems : Boinc destroying wifi
Message 59749 Posted 17 Jan 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
You can limit how much bandwidth BOINC uses for upload/download. Advance mode > Tools > Computing preference. I've had to set limits to downloads since my DSL (50K) easily gets saturated and reset, changing my IP address. This messed up Utorrent connections to some of my private torrent sites that only track IP addresses. Annoyingly that requires me to log back into the sites for seeding to continue. |
13) Message boards : News : BOINC 7.4.36 released to the public
Message 59680 Posted 15 Jan 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
I already have a prior version of BOINC installed along with two active projects: milkyway and SETI. How do I properly install the latest version of BOINC without corrupting work in progress and work ready to run? You should be able to just run the installer. It should stop BOINC, install the new version and restart BOINC and continue crunching where it left out. That is what I usually do. For the overly cautious. In advanced view, File > Exit BOINC. Check Windows Task Manager to see that BOINC and project exe files have stopped. Run installer. NOTE: Download the version without Virtualbox unless you intend to attach to a project that needs it. |
14) Message boards : BOINC client : Suggestion: Perform resource share calculations on the local machine
Message 59673 Posted 15 Jan 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
The algorithms is anything but simple. BOINC is open source. You can always submit your simple fix for the developers to look at. Edit HINT: Starting point. Separate the RS for CPU and GPU. Modify server and manager software to implement separate RS. Make sure that the new manager will work properly with projects running older server versions without split RS. Ensure that older version managers wont be broken by the split RS on the server. Make sure everything works with a mix of projects with old and new software . |
15) Message boards : BOINC client : Suggestion: Perform resource share calculations on the local machine
Message 59636 Posted 13 Jan 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
You are still expecting immediate response. It doesn't work that way. It can take weeks before RS finds a balance. It took me 6 months to balance my SETI and Milkyway project. There is always overshoot by one or the other project, but in the long term a balance is maintained. The trick was to make incremental changes. Next I will tackle Einstein which took a big jump ahead when SETI was misbehaving for almost a month. |
16) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Suggestions For New Or Updated Features
Message 59591 Posted 13 Jan 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
Could we please have a "Completion Time (estimated)" field in the Task tab in addition to (or as an option to?) the "Remaining (estimated)", populated once a work unit is started? First, it is almost impossible for BOINC to estimate completion times since even the given estimate can be way off positive or negative by a large margin. There is no need to micromanage by aborting WU. Any un-started WU will be canceled automatically when deadline is reached. |
17) Message boards : Questions and problems : Switch between applications every X minutes problem
Message 59574 Posted 13 Jan 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
How are you measuring 'work'? I'm not familiar with Asteroids project or if it is CPU or GPU or both. If you're looking at credits issued, that has nothing to do with time spent processing. Many projects grant excessive credits. In my case my RS for Seti=1000, and Milkyway=170 to achieve parity in credits received. I know of projects were the disparity is in the millions. |
18) Message boards : Questions and problems : Switch between applications every X minutes problem
Message 59572 Posted 12 Jan 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
As far as I am aware, there is no functionality for an end user to accurately and reliably tell BOINC how to split our donated system resources. Your perception is incorect. A project may be able to jump the queue with short deadline forcing priority processing, but this doen't give more processing time to the project in the long term. Boinc just wont ask that project for more work until RS is met with other project. |
19) Message boards : The Lounge : The Seti is Slumbering Cafe
Message 59555 Posted 11 Jan 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
I thought I'd just add that on several boards that I visit the rule is simple. Posting that you had a message removed, gets the post removed and warning issued. Posting that the mods where unfair, gets the post removed and warning issued. Three warnings of any kind and you're gone for 3 months. Give them another reason to be banned again when you return and you get a lifetime ban. Just pointing out that the cat man has already had more lives then most bulletin boards would give. It's up to you to change your behaviour. |
20) Message boards : Questions and problems : Switch between applications every X minutes problem
Message 59554 Posted 11 Jan 2015 by Aurora Borealis |
Switch between applications every X minutes is the interval that BOINC uses to check if it should be changing project. It is not a firm switch time. It the project is still owed time based on RS it wont switch. If it is time to switch project, it will continue until the next checkpoint then switch. If the project doesn't have checkpoints it will continue until the WU is completed, then switch project. |
