At approximately 20:21 UTC on 06/09 my computer received a message from Collatz that the "Project is temporarily shut down for maintenance". |

Collatz came back up on 3/16, but went back off on 3/21. No big deal, as I have 4-6 days of C@H tasks remaining in the queues. |

Update on my previous message 60688. Now that Collatz is back up, my backlog of completed tasks has been uploaded and I received plenty of new tasks to crunch. I did not lose any completed work units, either; my crunching activity (~1.1 M/day) for the last 9 days (2/26-3/07) is within 3% of my activity for the preceding two weeks (2/12 to 2/26). I am going to try to continue to treat Collatz and Slicker with patience. I think they deserve it. |

Oddly enough, Collatz is still accepting completed tasks. So, I am going to keep crunching my Collatz work units until I run out of them. Hopefully, by that point Collatz will be back. In the meantime, I am going to look for alternatives. Not too many projects run on GPUs under Mac OS, particularly some of my older slower GPUs like NVIDIA GeForce 320M, NVIDIA GeForce 9400, and NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT. |

Again, it would be a shame if Slicker pulled the plug on the project. Once we get passed the Martin Luther King Jr holiday, I will look to see if Slicker gives us some sign that the project is coming back online. |

BarryAZ, I am an old-timer, too - I began crunching for Seti in 2000, long before Berkeley developed the BOINC framework. I still crunch a small amount for Seti, but have shifted focus to other projects; it became too burdensome to troubleshoot the Seti optimized clients, particularly since the Mac OS is not a focal point for Seti. So, once, GPU apps were released by Einstein and Collatz, I shifted a lot of my effort there. |

I would be disappointed to see Collatz disappear. I would be surprised, too, as Slicker indicated that he had been putting "hundreds" of hours of effort trying to solve incompatibility issues with the AMD GPUs running tasks under OpenCL. (I am sure that I failed to accurately describe the problem. Nonetheless, the fact remains that Slicker claims he is investing much time and energy into the project.) On the other hand, there was a fair amount of grousing about the last outage on the Collatz forum, and I wonder if that might have been the straw that broke the camel's back. By the way, BarryAZ, I saw you profiled at boinc.berkeley.edu. Congratulations! |

Slicker frequently posts information about extended outages of Collatz at Home on the Collatz Conjecture forum at www.setiusa.us. You can find the threads at http://www.setiusa.us/forumdisplay.php?19-Collatz-Conjecture Poked around a bit and didn't see any discussion of the ongoing extended outage. Bummer. |

Slicker typically lets the Collatz at Home community know when there is a severe problem that takes the project down for an extended period of time - even if it is a brief message on the home page of the web site. The fact that no one has heard anything for ~10 days is rather worrisome. I too hope that nothing is wrong with Slicker. |

Collatz appears to be down with the following message on its website: "The project's database server is down. Please check back in a few hours" |

Collatz is "down for system maintenance". So, it would appear that Slicker is trying to get the project up and running again. |

Looks like Collatz is down. Slicker's worst-case scenario happened on the second day of his vacation? |

I ran BOINC on four Power Macintosh 7500s (PPC 601 CPU, introduced 1995), each upgraded to a 500 Mhz G3 processor. They ran OS/X slowly, but without a glitch. SETI@Home computer ID numbers are 2049370, 1994763, 2044006, and 2043989. Wife made me retire them - new house has no basement. |
