Not really wasting my time. I run World Community Grid(30), Rosetta@home(13), Seti@home(13) too. But I am really disappointed because I feel CPDN is the most important thing I could run. If they all had work units, 44% of my spare resources would go to CPDN. (Actually, those resource shares result in CPDN getting 50% of my spare CPU time.)

I have received no work in months (Linux machine), so my back-off must be at maximum. But it seems nowhere near a week

I have the same problem. I installed Boinc on my new x86_64 machine using the following shell script: boinc_7.0.28_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh

This machine is running Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.3 (Santiago). It has a 4-core Xeon processor and 8 GBytes of RAM, but that probably has nothing to do with this.

When I try to do the run_manager, I get this:

$ ./run_manager
./boincmgr: error while loading shared libraries: libnotify.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Similarly, if I check, I get:

$ rpm -ql libnotify
/usr/bin/notify-send
/usr/lib64/libnotify.so.1
/usr/lib64/libnotify.so.1.2.3
/usr/share/doc/libnotify-0.5.0
/usr/share/doc/libnotify-0.5.0/AUTHORS
/usr/share/doc/libnotify-0.5.0/COPYING
/usr/share/doc/libnotify-0.5.0/NEWS

I hope there is an answer here because cycles are awasting.

I just downloaded 6.10.44 to my Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.5 (Tikanga) system and it works just fine with no fiddling around.

The latest version I can find that works on my CentOS 4 system is 5.10.45. Anything after that fails due to the CentOS 4 libraries being too old, but 5.10.45 continues to work on that system.

(I am not asking for help.)

Boinc client has now been running about two months now with no crashes, but getting no Hydrogen@home applications being fetched or run. Pretty much points the finger at H@H.

I allow 100% of all four (count 'em, two) processors.
I allow 75% of memory (8 GBytes RAM) when machine is in use and
I allow 90% of memory when machine is not in use.
I do not know how the client tells if the machine is in use or not.

I have been running the boinc client 6.2.15 for a bit over a week now, allowing hydrogen@home tasks, and it just crashed. Here is the end of my trillian.boinc.log file:

I also run climate prediction, setiathome, rosetta, world community grid, malaria control, and predictor (that does not usually get any work), with no problems.

I still imagine there is a problem with hydrogen at home, but just as an OS should not crash when there is a problem with its user applications, so boinc client should not crash when there is a problem with one of its applications.

...

It seems, but only seems, that it crashes after a hydrogen@home work unit has been downloaded. But I cannot believe downloading a work unit would do it. It seems, but only seems, that the hydrogen@home work unit does not get started. But this could be because it starts and causes the crash before the boinc client gets around to logging that it started. Many hydrogen@home work units complete, many of them successfully.

Well I have now run both machines for a little over a week with hydrogen@home getting no work units and the clients have not crashed. I will try for another week, but it is suggestive...

It has now gone for about three weeks without downloading any work for hydrogen@home and has not crashed on either of my machines.

With the arrival of client 6.2.15, I turned on hydrogen@home for about a day and it seems to be OK. I do not draw any conclusion yet, but no crashes.

I do not know if hydrogen@home has been fixed, or if the latest boinc client has been made more resistant to whatever hydrogen@home has been doing.

Hi,

not sure if someone else allready posted it but i do think 6.2.xx is broken like hell.

I've seen this on numberous project while beeing paired with some wingmen that use 6.2.xx
It's allways the same message...

<core_client_version>6.2.14</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
Can't get shared memory segment name: shmget() failed
</message>
]]>

example:
http://genlife.is-a-geek.org/genlife/workunit.php?wuid=18194

seen some crashes on Milkyway and S@H too... always the same pattern/error message...

I ran 6.2.11 for several weeks (2 or maybe 3) on two different 32-bit machines. One on CentOS4 and the other on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. Both worked fine without that message. I upgraded the RHEL5 machine to 6.2.14 and it, too, works fine.

I could not upgrade the CentOS4 machine to 6.2.14 but that was because the CentOS4 library for something (glibc?) is too old. I should upgrade that machine to CentOS5, but I have not gotten to that yet.

I just had the same issue on Centos.

The fix for me - believe it or not - was

> yum install libXcomposite

!

Yes, it is difficult to believe. I did not have to do that because CentOS4 comes with xorg-x11-libs-6.8.2-1.EL.33.0.4 and I doubt your GUI would work without that.
And for RHEL5, it comes with libXcomposite-0.3-5.1 that I did not have to install either. Must have come with the distribution.

Changing the font is the wrong way to solve your problem. Adjust the width of the fields instead. You can adjust the width of the fields by grabbing the right side of the field box with the mouse. Slide the side left to shrink the field. Slide right to expand the field.

To grab the right side of the field box, carefully hover the mouse pointer over the right side of the field box. When the grabber (a small left-right arrow) appears, press and hold the mouse button (usually the left button). Hold the button down while sliding. When you release the button the grabber changes back to a normal pointer.

No help. My window is all the way across the 1280 pixels of the monitor, so I cannot anywhere near get all the fields in if I make them all wide enough to get everything in. As it is, I set the Name field much too small, and the Application field somewhat too small. Also, the Status field is not really wide enough. It worked a lot better with the version that came before, that I used with 5.10.45 (though the boincmgr came with an earlier release).

I am currently using LucidaTypewriter Sans 9, but that is too big for boincmgr and a little hard to read. I would normally use Sans 10, though I actually prefer URW Gothic L.

How new/old is CentOS 5? I know it's Red Hat based, but that's about it.

Couple things...

You don't need to unpack the .sh as root. You can do that with your regular user account.

It's possible that the Ubuntu build's manager won't work for you. You can try an older version. They are here, scroll down to the bottom and try 5.8.16 and see if that runs for you.

CentOS 5 is the current version, based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 which is also the current one. The BOINC client and BOINC manager work fine on CentOS 4 (not a typo) and RHEL 5. I currently am running boinc client 5.10.45 on CentOS 4 and boinc client 6.2.14 on RHEL5

When running boincmgr in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 with a 1024(height) x 1280(width) monitor, the size of the type is too large to get the fields on the screen even when the window is the full width of the screen.

This was not the case with 5.10.45 or even 6.2.11. Of course those used an older version of boincmgr.

Can you either make the type size smaller, or provide a way for the user to control it?

I figured out how to do it, by going to "Start"->System->Preferences->Fonts, but this is not really satisfactory because when I pick a condensed font, it does it for almost all applications, and they are then very difficult to read.

Also, though less important, the little window at the bottom right just says "Connected" instead of "Connected to localhost (6.2.14) as the old boincmgr did. It did it this way for a moment once.

I'm not remembering the whole thread (and it's way too early/late - depending on how you look at it - to go back through it).

Is there something that seems to trigger the crash? If there is, you could always run it under gdb. I've only done it once, and with help, so I'm not any use beyond the suggestion.

Normally, I sure would not wish to do that. I see that the boinc client shipped with a symbol table, which is good. So if someone would tell me how to setup the /etc/rc.d/boinc file to run it under gdb and capture the segmentation fault and get a trace of things, I guess I could do it, provided the output of gdb could be sent to a file or files.

In the mean time, I've forwarded all information you've given to the developers. I am now waiting for one of them to tell me what to ask you, or him to dive into the thread all by himself. Whichever comes first. ;-)

Should I continue to post crash data, or do you agree that I have posted enough of them until developers have suggestions.

Just a reminder: both machines are running boinc client 6.2.11 debug version (although I see no difference between it and the 5.10.45 non-debug version I used to run).

Excuse my complete ignorance but what is trillian.error.log doing in a BOINC log? Googling this only ever shows up on Seti forum and now here.

Used to use an alternate msnmgr called Trillian, so is this something u use and would you mind running BOINC if so without this program active?

Sorry.

I have two computers and one is named trillian and the other is named valinuxl when it is running Linux (and it is named valinuxw when running Windows).

trillian.error.log is the error log (stderr) the boinc client writes on the trillian machine. trillian.boinc.log is the normal log (stdout) the boinc client writes on the trillian machine.

Similarly for the valinuxl machine.

While I do not see hydrogen@home applications start before the crashes, it seems to be a pattern that that task downloads soon before. I am going to let the boinc client run but to fetch no more hydrogen@home work units be fetched.
