1) Message boards : Questions and problems : "Account Unknown" in User Profiles (Windows 10) (Message 93098)

Excerpt from a forthcoming blog post, FYI:

In Win10 x64 1903, I ran SystemPropertiesAdvanced > Advanced tab > User Profiles > Settings. At that location, I found myself in a User Profiles window, with a list of "Profiles stored on this computer." Among those profiles, I saw two "Account Unknown" entries. I was able to remove each of those by selecting and clicking Delete. But after I deleted one of them, the desktop went black. It then occurred to me that I had deleted the accounts installed by the BOINC software. Apparently the BOINC programmers had failed to attend to this detail -- to insure, that is, that their accounts would be named in the User Profiles window.

For some reason, I am not finding the option that would allow me to specify the drive or folder where I want to cache BOINC data. I think I must have found it previously, but it doesn't seem to be in Options > Computing Preferences or Other Options. This is BOINC Manager 7.14.2 x64 on Win10. Thanks.

I've just returned to BOINC after some years away. The occasion: I was looking for a screensaver, and I remembered this project. Glad to be back: it appears the default settings have been improved, or something: I am not having the former problem of BOINC taking control of my system and not letting go.

I was dismayed, though, at how clunky the interface is. From the perspective of one seeking a screensaver, it's a significant drawback. I'm using World Community Grid, but the problem appears in the BOINC logo etc. as well.

My suggestion would be to offer two modes of appearance: scientific and fun. The former might provide more detail on what is happening (i.e., what is being calculated) and why it matters. The latter, designed ideally by those who know how to construct appealing graphics, might lean more toward artists' conceptions of what is happening.

The point of that suggestion would be to offer a competitive screensaver, so as to enhance BOINC's appeal to others whose machines could be contributing to the work at hand.

There may be an additional way to make BOINC more appealing. I don't presently see that the credits mean anything. It may be worth consulting with e.g., game designers for ideas on how one could spend one's credits to acquire a cooler screensaver, or to qualify as a participant in projects labeled "insider" or otherwise having cachet. For instance, maybe NASA doesn't really need BOINC -- but maybe the possibility of qualifying as a participant in some NASA-related research would stimulate participation in other computations by many hoping to qualify.

I have other ideas, but they mostly relate to drinking games, so I'll stop here.

Thanks but, you know, had I asked the question weeks ago, I probably still would have gotten an answer that doesn't help me.

Looks like the easier solution is just to bail out of World Community Grid.

I have been running BOINC on a Windows XP machine. At present it is focused solely on the Nutritious Rice project.

Now I have installed boinc and boinc-manager on an Ubuntu 9.10 machine. In the BOINC Manager GUI, I see World Community Grid as my project, which is fine. It shows work done = 0.00, even though boinc has been installed on this machine for some weeks.

In the Messages tab, BOINC Manager shows repeats of "Scheduler request failed: Peer certificate cannot be authenticated with known CA ..."

On the World Community Grid webpage, the only device shown for my account is the WinXP machine. There does not appear to be a way to add a device at that webpage.

I would like to get BOINC running on the Ubuntu machine, using the same World Community Grid project and account as the WinXP machine. Any suggestions?
