1) Message boards : BOINC Manager : BOINC doesn't support UWP/Windows app to be added as an exclusive application (Message 86833)
Posted 2 Jul 2018 by bugmenot
Post:
Tested on Windows 10.

Steps to reproduce the error:
1. Open BOINC Manager
2. On the menu bar, go to View > Advanced View
3. On the menu bar, go to Options > Exclusive applications
4. Under the "Suspend processor and network usage when these appliications are running" section, click Add
5. Choose a executable of a UWP/Windows app, such as ABC.exe (Where is the executable of a UWP/Windows app? Open the app, and open Task Manager. Within Task Manager, click More details at the lower left, and go to Details tab. Look for the process name of the app, right click on it, and click Open file location. Then you get the path of the executable.)
6. BOINC tells that 'ABC.exe' is not an executable application.

However, I found a workround to add a UWP/Windows app:
1. Add a random Win32 app as an exclusive application, such as EFG.exe
2. Go to C:\ProgramData\BOINC, right click on cc_config.xml, and click edit.
3. Look for "<exclusive_app>EFG.exe</exclusive_app>". Replace EFG.exe with ABC.exe
4. Close and save cc_config.xml
5. Exit BOINC Manager (right click on the BOINC icon on the taskbar > click Exit) and reopen it
6. Now the UWP/Windows app has finally been added to the exclusion application list

I just managed to "revive" my Desire HD using this Thread:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4567904/how-to-start-an-application-using-android-adb-tools

Recommended:
adb pull /data/data/edu.berkeley.boinc/client
change preferences in global_prefs.xml and globals_prefs_override.xml (use batteries, lower battery threshold like 30%, 100% CPU Time)
adb push global_prefs.xml /data/data/edu.berkeley.boinc/client
repeat with override xml

kill boinc process if necessary or just reboot the phone
start boinc by:
am start -a android.Intent.Main -n edu.berkeley.boinc/.SplashActivity

There is also the adb shell monkey variant explained in the thread from above, but I haven't tried that yet.

[Didn't know where else to post this...]
BOINC's exclusive app list is a good way to allow programs priority over BOINC tasks, but when the exclusive program quits, BOINC tasks immediately run again. A user-adjustable delay would be helpful to delay starting the tasks again even after the exclusive app has stopped.
5) Message boards : Questions and problems : Problems moving Linux BOINC client directory (Message 48025)
Posted 3 Mar 2013 by bugmenot
Post:
boinc does not seem to like changing the data directory
so you need to work around that one.
I tried 2 things, of which one worked.
What does not work: moving the data and use symlinks to link to the new directory. boinc does not see the data.

What does work: use mount --bind

[*] service boinc-client stop to stop the client(might be different on your system)
[*] mv /var/lib/boinc-client/* /path/to/new/dir/boinc-client/ move the data to the destination
[*] mount --bind /path/to/new/dir/boinc-client /var/lib/boinc-client bind the new directory to the old one
[*] now test it with service boinc-client start or your OS’s equivalent
[*] it will work, so add /path/to/new/dir/boinc-client /var/lib/boinc-client none bind 0 0 to your /etc/fstab so that the bind is created on system start

I've installed Boinc 64-bit in a 64-bit Ubuntu, but after opening the Boinc Manager and clicking "Help" > "About BOINC Manager", it says after the number of the version "x86" instead of "x64". Why is this?

Building BOINC, a little confused on what the "--with-x" argument does for configure. Google didn't help, was hoping someone could explain it to me. Thanks.

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Advanced_view seems to have been spam-linked (or whatever you call it).

See the 2nd paragraph under advanced view.

I didn't know where else to report this (and didn't want to try and clean it up myself and somehow get blamed for it).

asking is not really an option... How is it possible that it works on my other computer at work? It's behind the same firewall!?

The newer version of BOINC uses different ports which your firewall has blocked. Download the version of it that works on the other computer and that should solve your problem.

You can download all versions here:

Thanks :) I downloaded that version and I have no problems now. It is able to communicate with seti servers.

15) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Network preferences won't stick v4.49 (Message 3559)
Posted 20 Mar 2006 by bugmenot
Post:
Greetings.
I am a complete newcomer to distributed computing, never mind BOINC, so I'm on a learning curve here. I'm running v4.49 as a single user on WinME and I can't get the "network activity using preferences" option to stick. After around ten seconds it reverts either to "always available" or to "suspended" - whichever was used last. Internet access is via a LAN to a dial up connection, so I really do need to manage net access. What am I doing wrong?

I am running 5.2.13 and setting for proxy will not stick in options. I have tried the install on 2 different pc's with the same result. Is there a way to put my proxy server value in manually like maybe an .INI file?

I do want to run Boinc projects just non when im actually using my PC, i just want the projects to tun when the screensaer is active. The problem is tho unless i have Boinc running in the background(which is when i don't want ti running)then when the screensaver becomes active i get the error message boinc in not currently running.

Edit: If in the boinc options i set them like the below, am i correct in thinking tho the Boinc icon is in my task-bar no work is actually been working on uninstall my pc i idle for the set time. If yes then my problem seems to have been me not understanding, sorry.

Do work while computer is running on batteries? no
Do work while computer is in use? no
Do work only after computer is idle for 3 minutes

Also is it possible to have Boinc start in the taskbar because every time i start up it is always on my desktop.

I also don't wish to have Boinc start with my PC but will stopping this cause Boinc screen-saver to not work or will it be fine, thanks.

To me, %nice sounds like the amount of time the kernel is spending attending to the niceness of each process, rather than doing something useful, like crunching numbers for boinc.

I suppose my question is - why is the %nice value so high, why isn't boinc showing up in %user?

Ah. No, you have the wrong definition of %nice. The kernal is in "system" priority. Programs you run are in "user" priority. BOINC does not want to compete against your web browser and such, so it is in "nice" priority. The thing that top is measuring is how much time is given to the processes that are running at each priority.

Example: We'll take one single CPU second, and divide it up into 100 parts, and look at what is happening in each of those little time slices.

During 6 of these little slices, the OS is doing it's "housekeeping", moving packets across the network, refreshing your screen, updating your clock, seeing where the mouse is, and deciding which of the _other_ slices to give to which program.

During 14 of these slices, your web browser was redrawing that animated GIF, your email program went out and checked for new mail, and your MP3 player sent some music to the speakers.

During the remaining 80 slices, there was nothing to do. If BOINC was not running, the CPU would just fall into an "idle" state and literally do nothing. But, BOINC is running, so the CPU crunched another 1/100000 of a SETI result instead.

In the _next_ second, we ask "what is my computer doing", and we get "6% system, 14% user, 80% nice".

Hope that helps...

Thanks for this. So just to clarify - any process running with lower of higher niceness shows in the percentage nice value?
