I have been working on this for a while. Well if it makes you feel better I had to reinstall xubuntu and now I am back to where I began(can't install BOINC). I should have known the old laptop's batteries no longer hold a charge. I unplugged the laptop while doing a system update, thus the reinstall. But that's not important, I got it working again. So could I please get a step by step guide, for someone new at this whole thing. Many years ago I was somewhat proficient at this, but not anymore. I believe the problem I am running into, is I do not have the right command for the terminal to install BOINC. It appears there are different codes, I am not having any success with them at the moment. Below are the some of commands I used, and it was not able to install or find anything. sudo aptitude install boinc-client boinc-manager sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager Oddly enough, I misspelled one of the above commands and found out my laptop does not have something to the affect of super cow power. Yes, linux is right for me. First off some of the hardware is to old for windows to work correctly. Secondly I don't want to spend an insane amount of money on windows. Thus my snark comment about you paying me so I can use windows. Not to mention I just want it to work 24/7 and not worry about running into a large amount of glitches, security flaws, system updates and so on. To bad you have "blocked me" so you won't be able to read this. Because I could still use your help. Or anyone elses for that matter.

I had this all setup many years ago, but have forgot how to do it. I also can no longer find anything easy to follow online. I am using xubuntu 9.04. Thanks for your help everyone. Please keep it simple. I have already tried the install page here on this site http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC_on_Ubuntu This has to be a very lame attempt to get newbs up and running. I wrote that page along with several other ubuntu users. We put a lot of work into that page so I resent you refering to it as lame. That page is about as simple as it gets. If it's too complicated for you then try harder or forget about running BOINC on Linux because you aren't going to find anything simpler if you need BOINC to auto start. Well I finally got that link to work. This stuff just gets rather frustrating at times. Sometimes the stuff works, sometimes it doesn't. Now the other machines either won't read the xubuntu disk, I get a blank screen, or the keyboard won't work. I finally get one problem solved then three more rear their ugly heads. If that's how you're going to reply to me getting frustrated over all this, then why don't you give me the money so I can install the dysfunctional windows OS as well as antivirus software. Hey I tried my best getting it to work (which finally I did) and spent most of the day doing it. I work over 40 hours a week and instead of spending my day resting, I am spending it on this. So I really don't need your sarcasm. If this was some stupid hack for a playstation or one for Halo, then fine. But some of this stuff is important. You should know that since you and others spent a considerable amount of time creating the link. Now since I got it running, how do I get the latest version of BOINC up and running. The current version for the link is 6.2.xx. I was asking for help, not a rude response. I already said I was a newb, so I don't need my face rubbed in it anymore then need be. Thank you for the links. At the moment it is getting late, I have been up most of the day playing around with all this stuff, so I am off to bed. At least I was able to bring one computer from the brink. If I came off as cold, mean and what have you; well then sorry. Thanks for your help everyone. It looks like I may not be able to tackle the other problems for a while. I have already been waiting anxiously over 3 months to get started on all this. It might be just as long for me to get back to where I finished today. I would like to thank you and all the others for the time you spent making BOINC work under linux for all of us newbs.

A few years ago there was a step by step by step process on installing BOINC in ubuntu and getting it to run on startup. What happened to that simple newb setup?! Sorry for the rant I have just spent most of the day getting xubuntu up and running, and trying in vain to find a way to install BOINC. And I still have 4 more computers to setup! Again thanks for the help.
