1) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC issue with MacPro Late 2013 GPU AMD FirePro D700 (2) (Message 102091)

Well, after getting frustrated with the frequent crashes (windowserver timeout) I gave up and didn't run BOINC either manually or at login. And I still crashed with same problem. So whatever is causing it is somewhere else other than BOINC or any of it's projects.
Will continue tracking it down.
Thanks for all your help.

2) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC Manager pop-up: Communicating with client, please wait -- Temporary Hang (Message 64402)
Posted 21 Sep 2015 by Craig Dudley
Post:
Just installed BOINC 7.6.11 on Mac OS X 10.10.5 and I am receiving the pop-up "Communicating with BOINC client. Please wait ..." with a Quit BOINC Manager button and a Cancel button. It hangs there for at least an hour before I gave up on it. When I click the Cancel button, the pop-up goes away for a few seconds then reappears. When I click on the Quit BOINC Manager it does in fact quits.

This problem occurs on a Standard account. This problem does NOT occur on an Admin account only if the system has just been re-booted and Admin account is the 1st to log in. BOINC 7.6.11 was installed in an Admin account.

What are the causes for this pop-up? How do I get around this issue?

Hi Charlie,
I uninstalled BOINC, rebooted, and installed BOINC again. I did click Yes in the 1st popup
about letting non-administrative users run BOINC and No for the screen saver question.

I did download the AddRemoveUser and run it. But I noticed even though the .zip file was dated
22 March, 2010 (as you indicated), the AddRemoveUser program inside the .zip file was dated
10 November, 2009. Is that correct?

But I still have the same problem with my non-administrative user trying to run BOINC.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Hi,
Just installed this new release on Mac OS X 10.6.3 using my admin account. I then ran AddRemoveUser in Terminal to add my non-admin user to BOINC list of users allowed to run BOINC mManager.
When I move over to my non-admin account, I get a popup box indicating "BOINC ownership or permissions; please reinstall BOINC. (Error code -1200)" with an OK button. Click the OK and BOINC manager goes away.

I reboot. Reinstall BOINC 6.10.43 answering the resulting pop boxes the same (yes for non-admin accounts, no for screen saver) and reboot again.
Log into my non-admin account again and get the same popup box when BOINC manager starts out of my Login Items.

Any ideas of how to resolve this problem.

Thanks

I didn't see any other indication that the installer had a problem other than it didn't start when double clicked.

Sorry, I'm a bit unclear here: what didn't start when double-clicked? Are you saying BOINC wouldn't run, or that the installer wouldn't start? I didn't see any mention of that in your earlier posts.

*****What didn't start was BOINC Installer*****

Every user can always to launch BOINC. The only difference if a particular user is not authorized to run BOINC is that BOINC will display a message saying that user is not authorized and then quit.

I installed Mac OS X 10.6.2 and then installed BOINC 6.10.17 and answered Yes to the non-administrative user question.. Then I downloaded AddRemoveUser and ran it on a Terminal command line and did not have a crash. So maybe something got fixed in 10.6.2.

I'm a bit puzzled. Why did you also run AddRemoveUser? Answering Yes to the installer question should have been enough to allow all users to run BOINC. Did you try running BOINC after installing and found that had not worked?

*****I thought you need to run AddRemoveUser to add the specific users ids of those non-administrative users allowed to run BOINC Manager. I didn't know answering Yes to the installer question was the only step needed for non-administrative users to run BOINC Manager.*****

Hi,
As I said in my Subject line, I am running 10.6.1 and as such, running on a quad processor Intel Mac Pro.

I didn't see any other indication that the installer had a problem other than it didn't start when double clicked.

When I originally installed BOINC 6.10.17, I diod answer Yes to the question of allowing non-administrative users to run and control BOINC.

Now not to completely screw things up, on another system I installed Mac OS X 10.6.2 and then installed BOINC 6.10.17 and answered Yes to the non-administrative user question.. Then I downloaded AddRemoveUser and ran it on a Terminal command line and did not have a crash. So maybe something got fixed in 10.6.2.

Where do you want me to send the crash report?

Thanks

Hi,
Well, it looks like the AddRemoveUser command line tool actually worked because my standard, non-privledged account now can run BOINC without a popup window stating I need to contact my BOINC Administrator to add my user id to the list of authorized users for running BOINC.

So I guess I am down to the Installer "Exited with Code: 246" problem.

Post:
Hi,
From my administrative user id I was trying to use AddRemoveUser command line tool to allow a non-privledged user to run BOINC.
The tool crashed with a EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS) exception type (crash report provided upon request).
So I tried reinstalling BOINC 6.10.17 and am now getting the following Console message:

11/9/09 3:00:56 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[181] ([0x0-0x18018].edu.berkeley.boinc.Installer[238]) Exited with exit code: 246

So now I can only run BOINC Manager on my administrator user id, which is not my non-privledged standard user id where I normally work.

Can someone tell me how to get out of this Catch 22 circle so I can allow my non-administrative (ie standard Mac OS X account) user id run BOINC?

Thanks

Hi Richard,
Looking at my other machines, BOINC SETI@home is executing previously requested tasks.
So you are probably correct. I tried updating SETI@home project and got a message
indicating the "Project has no jobs available".
So I will be patient.
Thanks

Hi,
I have just used Mac OS X 10.6.1 Migration Assistant to transfer user information (including BOINC 6.6.36) from one laptop to another.
BTW, 6.6.36 on 10.6.1 runs fine.

When trying to run BOINC (SETI@home project) on new laptop, received a message to reinstall, which I did. Ran BOINC again & got prompted to enter an administrator user id and password so BOINC could make changes, which I did.

At this point, when started BOINC shows the following start up messages:

********End of start up messages************

The problem I am seeing is that the "Running CPU benchmarks" message is missing and never shows up.
I suspect something wasn't copied correctly when I migrated the user (a standard account)
from the old laptop to the new laptop. Or there is some CPU signature BOINC creates for
the old laptop that doesn't match the new laptop.

I tried downloading 6.10.17 to see if that made a difference but it didn't.

Any ideas on how to get my SETI@home & BOINC to start "computing" again?

Thanks
