1) Message boards : BOINC client : duration_correction_factor should be by application
Message 5015 Posted 15 Jul 2006 by Jim Baize |
My experience with some projects shows, that a duration_correction_factor on project level can cause trouble when the application changes and the relation between rsc_fpops_est and the actual required fpops changed for that new application. I agree with this opinion. |
2) Message boards : BOINC client : file info outside project in state file
Message 4963 Posted 11 Jul 2006 by Jim Baize |
Again, thank you for that info. A couple of months ago I made a back up of my boinc directory, reformated my hard-drives and reinstalled Linux. As a result, not everything was put back as pristine as it should have been. I also realized what I was inadvertently doing to make it work. I think I might have it working properly now. If not, I'm sure I'll be back for more info. :) Jim |

Another question, if I may. What are the proper permission settings for the boinc-client data directory and related files? I don't know why this would all of a sudden become a problem, but I do want to at least eliminate it as a possibility. AGain, thanks for the help. |

Ok. thank you for that suggestion. I will give it a try to see if that helps. Hopefully, though, I'll never get the chance to see it catch an error. ;) Jim |
5) Message boards : BOINC client : file info outside project in state file
Message 4952 Posted 9 Jul 2006 by Jim Baize |
In the past two weeks or so, I've had my linux machine crash on me. When it restarts I get error messages similar to this. file info outside project in state file It loses the computer ID and work for every project to which it was connected. It connects using a new computer ID and all new work. I am running Debian Linux (etch) with kernel version 2.6-15 on an AMD Duron 1200. Boinc core client version 5.4.10. Any other info needed that I forgot to post? Thanks in advance. Jim |

Hy, Have you tried the BOINC Wiki http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page |
7) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Interesting reading about BOINC
Message 2624 Posted 16 Jan 2006 by Jim Baize |
I hope you don't mind me putting this in this forum. I also hope that I am not repeating old news. I found this article this evening while surfing the net. It discusses the potential of BOINC and distributed computing. It used SETI as their basis for data collection. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. http://boinc.berkeley.edu/boinc_papers/internet/paper.pdf Jim |
8) Message boards : BOINC Manager : BOINC crashed
Message 2455 Posted 8 Jan 2006 by Jim Baize |
Stefan, you are saying "hung up" but I'm wondering if what you are describing is a Boinc crash. meaning that boinc manager encountered a fatal error and shut down or was forced to shut down. Also, if I understood you correctly, you stated that after you rebooted your computer, Boinc started functioning correctly. Is it still functioning correctly? If so, then perhaps it was just a transient problem, just one of those weird things that happens. One last thing that I can think of. You stated that you have an HT processor. Are you running with HT enabled? You stated that you saw you predictor WU's running. I just want to make sure that was due to the HT and not an indication to some problem. Jim |
9) Message boards : BOINC Manager : I miss the old SETI@Home
Message 2445 Posted 8 Jan 2006 by Jim Baize |
The one thing that I miss about classic seti is the screen saver. Although I rarely ran the screen saver, i would occassionally pull up the graphics just to watch them run for a few minutes. Kinda like a kalidescope (sp?) I know the boinc version can approximate the classic graphics, I still thinnk the classic graphics were much "prettier". ahh... the old days. LOL Jim |
10) Message boards : BOINC Manager : BOINC IS SUSPENDED
Message 569 Posted 27 Sep 2005 by Jim Baize |
You said you have your screensaver set to engage after one minute. You also have BOINC to suspend work when computer is active. How long after the screensaver engages do you wait to view the events? I am thinking that maybe there isn't enough time for BOINC to realize that the computer is idle to resume the projects. Perhaps you should let the computer sit idle for several minutes just to see what happens. Jim |

Message 467 Posted 20 Sep 2005 by Jim Baize |
On Seti's page there is an add-on download page. Look for it. On that page there is a utility called ThreadMaster. It purports to do exactly what you are requesting. I"ve not used it personally, but I've read comments from a few who have used it and they seem to be happy with it. Jim |
12) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Cannot attatch to new projects using v5.1.3
Message 339 Posted 13 Sep 2005 by Jim Baize |
I just check task manager: boinc.exe boincmgr.exe I also just checked all the version numbers and they are all 5.1.3 Next suggestion? |
13) Message boards : BOINC Manager : BOINC just doesn't work: 1) not adequately documented; 2) quirky; 3) just sits there idle most of hte time
Message 337 Posted 13 Sep 2005 by Jim Baize |
If you have specific problems we can most likely help you. Sadly, the Berkeley documentation of BOINC is lacking. However, there has been a volunteer effort to fully document every aspect of BOINC and many of the projects. Please, if you would like some help, tell us about your computer(s), OS, BOINC vers, and any other pertainant info. Jim |
14) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Cannot attatch to new projects using v5.1.3
Message 336 Posted 13 Sep 2005 by Jim Baize |
SZTAKI won't be helpful as they still use the version 4 code on their server, so you won't be able to get new work. It's been a while since I checked this thread. Sorry. Jord, to answer your question, I don't get that far. I guess I'll have to wait until I get a chance to attach to another V5.x project. |
15) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Cannot attatch to new projects using v5.1.3
Message 256 Posted 10 Sep 2005 by Jim Baize |
I cannot add any new projects using v5.1.3. I've tried with SZTAKI, Primegrid (before it went down), and Einstein. I go through the attach to new project wizard. It asks me for the URL of the project. I enter it and push next, it says that it is communicating with the project, but then comes back with a message stating that the URL is not a BOINC project, check the URL and try again. Jim |
16) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Do we remove SETI Classic
Message 204 Posted 8 Sep 2005 by Jim Baize |
classic runs at a higher priority than boinc and related projects, therefore classic will take almost all the processor time and leave none for boinc. |
17) Message boards : BOINC Manager : will not upload
Message 93 Posted 1 Sep 2005 by Jim Baize |
yes, I have an idea. Network congestion (or similar problem) on Seti's end. Due to the week long outage everyone was trying to upload / download. As more people succeed, the fewer people who will be trying. Give your uploads a few more days. If you are still having problems after the network congestion clears then come back and we will do more in depth investigation. |
18) Message boards : BOINC client : Reporting WU Results
Message 87 Posted 1 Sep 2005 by Jim Baize |
I'm just asking for clarification here. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by you "lost 42 WUs". How do you know they are lost? At what point did they get lost? |
19) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Not connecting
Message 85 Posted 1 Sep 2005 by Jim Baize |
where are you getting this error message? What is the exact error message? What kind of install did you do? etc... |
20) Message boards : BOINC Manager : 4.45 Hangs....
Message 84 Posted 1 Sep 2005 by Jim Baize |
I have also read that on some firewalls, one must specifically enable access for boinc manager, even on 127.0.0.1 |
