21) Message boards : BOINC client : Boinc On Vista - Projects Don't Suspend (Message 10550)

Yes, both machines are set for "Run based on preferences."

Also... I had this problem on a Win XP machine. However, after I "Stop[ped] using BOINCstats BAM!" to let BOINC talk with the projects the old fashioned way, the problem cleared up on the XP machine. Hence, the reason I thought BAM was at fault. I've since reattached the XP machine to BAM and its been working fine. This procedure did not clear-up the problem on either Vista machine.

FYI... I'm trying a clean install (uninstall and delete folders) of BOINC without using BAM. I'll report back ASAP.

Details, Details, Details ...

BOINC 5.8.16 running SETI, Einstein & Rosetta. Currently installed as a service, but I've tried shared also.

With BOINC installed on a couple vista machines, BOINC seems to be ignoring preference to suspend projects when user is active.

I thought this might be a problem with BAM, but after detaching from BAM the issue continues to occur. Machines running Win XP & Win 2k using the same preferences run fine.

Any suggestions?

Any chance the CPU utilization will be configurable based on the computers idle state?

25) Message boards : BOINC client : Request: Add'l Multiprocessor Settings (Message 3528)

Normally, setting BOINC to always run works fine. However, I've noticed certain applications get "jumpy". Configuring the settings to leave one processor free resolves the jumpiness while still allowing some processing to occur all the time.

A configuration as descibed below would be easier to administrate for a network of computers with varying numbers of processors.

With the increase in multi-core processors (and computers on an network having various numbers of processors), it would be nice to have a setting:

1) When multi-processor computer is in use, use all but X processors (but no less than 1)
2) When multi-processor computer is not in use, use all but Y processors (but no more than Z)

I have an idea for helping to ‘spread the word’ of BOINC – a referral system that awards ‘referral credits’ when your successfully convenience someone new to create a BOINC account.

A simple method would be to award one credit for each referred account opened. Another more exciting method might be to award a referral credit (or percentage thereof) for each referred accounts cobblestones.

Since many participates are competitive regarding cobblestones, this would provide another avenue for competition while also benefiting the projects.
28) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Feature Request: RSS Feeds in BOINC Tab (Message 2552)

Any chance we can get the various projects RSS news feeds as a tab in BOINC Manager? Not only would it be more convenient, but it might also cut down of some of the complaining when a server goes down since you’d have quick access to the information. Plus, the more feedback, the more we fell like we actually acomplishing something.

For that matter, a very simple HTML browser that gives quick access to the attached project preferences would be nice also. I think it would be more intuitive to many users since most people are used being able to set preferences in an application, not on a website.

Cool. So I should be able to copy the necessary xml files to a folder somewhere, then have the script on the remote machines download the xml files periodically.

I'm assuming this process wouldn't destroy (for lack of a better phrase) the work being processed by the remote machines?

I'm also assuming I can figure out what the necessary xml files are by poking around the messageboards here and/or at the project sites?

Thank you for the response. Out of curiosity, is there a “complex” way?

32) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Dail-Up Issue: Not Enough Time to Resolve Host (Message 2148)

Thank you. Based on your idea, I created a vbscript that seems to be doing the trick. It took some tweaking. In short...

The script pings a webserver to check if there is a connection.

If it finds the connection, its sets --Set_Run_Mode Always, waits a few seconds, then sets --Set_Network_Mode Always.

Once the script detects the connection is closed (by pinging the webserver a few minutes), it sets --Set_Run_Mode Auto and --Set_Network_Mode Never.

Thank you for the response. Yes, I've tried various communictions options but no option solves teh problem. Since these are remote, isolated machines, I can't justify a broadband connection nor is anyone there to manually connect.

Is there anyway to script (using windows host script) to tell BOINC to connect? I could then automate the dial-up process with script.

This problem is still ongoing on several machines with multiple projects attached.

Not sure if my previous message was clear enough. BOINC is not waiting for the dial up to establish a connection before it attempts to connect to each projects host. Before the computers can establish then connection (while it is still dialing & handshaking), BOINC tries to contact the projects host. BOINC reports that it can't resolve the host (which makes sense since the computer is still trying to establish the connection) and then disconnects the dial-up.

AV software & windows update establishes the connection just fine, which makes me think this is a BOINC problem.

When BOINC initiates a dial-up connection, it immediately attempts to resolve the project's server address before giving the computer time to complete dialing and establish a connection. It then reports it can’t resolve the host (of course) and disconnects.

All machines are using WinXP Pro SP2 and most are now running BOINC 5.2.13, but this problem has been going with previous versions of BOINC. I’m not ruling out a problem with the way my dial-up is configured within in windows, but I don’t know what the problem could be and other programs (such as AV software), dial-up just fine.
