Posted 31 Aug 2012 by Bernd Post: WCG if offline due to a Raid filesystem getting corrupted. Estimated 12-18 hours to repair. They are taking a snapshot of the very large Raid several TB of data before starting repairs. Then they need to repair the FS. Then they need to check that all new work in the system is not corrupted/missing files from when the problem started. Then they will do a slow restart to check the repairs. All BOINC backend servers ar currently reporting as project down for maintenance and if you can connect you get a Missing HTTP file error. Official post more in the Boic help forum on WCG posted to panicked users https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,33701 Here is the WCG help forum https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/listthreads?forum=83 |

(Message 45413)
Posted 23 Aug 2012 by Bernd Post: Apple today dropped an update to Mountain Lion 10.8.1 With a whole lot of bug fixes. Anyone tested BOINC with the new version? I don't expect any but thought I would ask. Also Apple dropped the first public Beta of 10.8.2 today to its beta testers. |

Posted 14 Aug 2012 by Bernd Post: From the SETI@home homepage: I expect this website will also go down as it is in the same building as SETI@Home. I don't know if they will take it down on tuesday like SETI or if it will be down for a shorter period as they don't have project maintenance scheduled for tuesday. |

Posted 14 Aug 2012 by Bernd Post: From the CPDN - News and Announcements thread: Well I'm going to keep crunching since I'm 5 days from being done with my WU and BOINC V7 gets funky with having too much work onboard. I keep a small catch and it only wants one WU at a time/CPU core. |

Posted 21 May 2012 by Bernd Post: 7.0.28 is out. I'm waiting @ 7.0.27 until I see some posts on if it is better. I will probably wait until the first week of June as I will be out of town later in the week. I'm also going to cutting back to summertime crunching levels; one half of my CPU cores and only at night. |

Why does the Installer for BOINC 7.0.27 require a full computer restart.
(Message 44030)
Posted 7 May 2012 by Bernd Post: Are you the same person as user 'B-Man', who just asked a very similar question over at SETI? Even if not, you might be interested in the reply I wrote there. Yes I am. I said thank you in that thread and I need to say so here also. Thank you for the time taken to answer my question. I also know I came real close to the line of being rude in the SETI thread so I apologize for that also. |

Why does the Installer for BOINC 7.0.27 require a full computer restart.
(Message 44014)
Posted 6 May 2012 by Bernd Post: I am getting ready to install BOINC 7.0.27 on my computer and the installer throws a flag that I will need to restart my computer after BOINC is installed. I never remember seeing that flag on any previous installation of BOINC in the 5-6.x versions. Is this new with BOIC 7.0.x? My System Mac Mini 2010 version OSX 10.6.8 8GB of Ram I aborted the install with that warning and am waiting on a post saying if the restart needed is normal. I am wondering what BOINC is fiddling with so deep in the OS that it needs to restart the OS to successfully install? I don't believe any application as a general rule needs to restart the OS. Macs are famous for their drag and drop installs. Apple has made a big push for that to be the case. |

Posted 14 Jan 2012 by Bernd Post: WCG forums seem to have died even though the server move was not supposed to have hit them. I get a basic place holder main page with error messages dotted around it in several locations. I get permission errors when I try the forums. Not hugely surprised by this as they are doing major server moves and upgrades for several more hours. |

Posted 12 Jul 2011 by Bernd Post: And now it seams to be down again and Milkyway too I think the last time Milkyway had a big outage that Travis said that RPI would over the summer shut down non key IT Functions/Server rooms would be shutdown any time daytime temps were expected to top 90F. They say they are not in full session so students are not harmed by facilities being offline. Supposedly RPI gives them something like 1/2 hour notice to shut things down and then they turn the AC and Power off to that room/ Facility. This is supposed to be a cost savings for the University. |
