1) Message boards : GPUs : Overclocking a GPU (Message 36834)

Thanks.

BTW -- Message tab in BOIC shows Climateprediction project is requesting work for the GPU, and also show that it tests the CPU occasionally, so something is working on the GPU, if not Climateprediction (the only project I am running).

Would BOINC request work from a project for a GPU even if the project was not designed to take advantage of GPUs?

Am I right in assuming that an overclocked CUDA GPU will perform BOINC projects better than CUDA standard GPUs that are not overclocked, as a general rule?

I keep an old computer always on and running climateprediction on a GPU I bought for it (nVidia Geforce 8400GS). Question is whether I should overclock the GPU to do project tasks faster. It might not make much difference for this GPU, but I'm wondering about overclocking in general for distributed computing projects.

Thanks. Per usual, I am old and in the way.

Running BOIC on an old computer (Intel P4, 1.8 gigHz CPU, 1 gig of DDR RAM (max motherboard allows) Windows XP Home Edition). BOIC is 6.10.18, Widgets 2.8.10

I use the computer solely for a single BOIC-using project, nothing else.

I have an old nVidia video card that I can throw in if BOINC will use it, an fx5200 with 128 meg cache. Otherwise I'll use it in some other doorstop to stave off recycling.

I understand that BOIC will test for usable GPUs and can do things faster on them. Is the nVidia fx5200 such a card?

Thanks

They do match the credits, thank you. Of course, I have no idea what the credit is based on or what it is good for, but now I what what the value correlates to.

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition (32-bit) and version 6.10.18 BOINC manager. The only project I am running is climateprediction.net.

In the advanced view of BOINC manager is a tab for statistics. Clicking on that tab bring up a graph, the horizontal axis of which is date, the vertical axis of which simply says "175.00 170.00 165.00 160.00 ..." down to about 140.00 or 145.00.

No definition is given anywhere that I have found, either here or at climateprediction.net, as to what the vertical axis is measuring.

So my two questions are: 170.00 WHAT? and Where on the BOINC manager do I find what the vertical axis is measuring?

I followed the link regarding cc_config.xml but have no idea how to set flags or such. This is getting far more complicated than it is worth, and I am bowing out.

Thanks for your attempts at helping me.

Oh, and connecting to the internet is no problem. There is no "advanced" option in the boinc manager.

I am searching for a cc_config.xml file throughout my entire system now. I went to /var/lib/boinc directly to check for such a file. No such file is shown, and no such file is showing up in the search throughout the system.

One of the posters had mentioned a gui_rpc_auth.cfg file. There is one in /var/lib/boinc and it is 32 bytes long.

I have the default firewall that came with Fedora 10. There is nothing in the firewall configuration that allows me to permit a particular service to be trusted. Trusted interfaces listed are all devices. As for trusted services, BOINC is not in the list of possible services to be added, even though BOINC-client starts on boot and even though I have changed my firewall configuration from "desktop" to "server" and permitted www (http) port 80 as a trusted service.

HTTP server configuration says that the user and group are apache, should this be changed to "boinc?"

Running Linux Fedora 10, 2.6.27.29 kernel. Finally got BOINC manager and client to communicate (thanks solely to the help of the people here and not to any mental acuity or activity on my part). Now I select a project, and am told that BOINC cannot communicate with the project, giving me three possible errors, one of which is that BOINC manager and client need to communicate on port 80.

Fair enough, I go into my firewall settings and check www -- port 80, which is the only thing I can see affecting port 80 in system-config-firewall.py 1.2.13 applet. But nooooooooooooo, BOINC still laughs at me.

So, I have two questions:

First: How do I make BOINC happy with my firewall?

Second: How do I prevent others from taking advantage of the fact that port 80 is now open?

I am running Linux Fedora 10 kernel 2.6.37.29, I used yum as root to download and install BOINC. I clicked on the BOINC Manager entry in Systems Tools as a user and it tries to connect to some web site but fails with the "cannot connect to the core client" error.

What is wrong? I was never asked for an email address or anything, I assume because the application was never able to connect to some place on the web.
