1) Message boards : Questions and problems : Suggestions wanted of buying a new Netbook for BOINC use (not solely) (Message 66149)

Thanks for your reply.

1) No brand preference, just a general purpose Netbook.

2) From memory, I paid under £500 (UK) for the Samsung N220, so an equivalent would be useful.

3) I did think most computers had a GPU (or a video card) installed, so is that a problem? The Samsung N220 had a video card installed.

4) Probably a good i5 would be useful.

In 2010, I bought a Netbook (Samsung N220), which I use for general use, whilst travelling, but at home I just use it for running BOINC projects.

I have installed the maximum amount of RAM (2048 MB) and it runs on Windows 10.

Obviously, since 2010 technology has moved on a bit, so I'm just wondering, if anybody knows of a modern general purpose Netbook (for portability) which I could buy?

Since I have had my PC upgraded to Windows 8.1, I notice that my PC is running sluggish, even when I have closed down BOINC. I have checked Task Manager and no BOINC products seems to be running and I have deselected "Computer Preferences/Leave Non-GPU in Memory while Suspended".

Everything runs at normal, after I done a "Restart" or "Shut Down".

Any ideas anyone?

Currently, I can't see it - which log file, should I expect to see the details?

(Well, I bought the Netbook in 2010, it probably needs updating now?)

Some years ago, I bought a Samsung N220 laptop, with Windows 7 (Home version) on it, for general use - I updated it to 2048 MB RAM, the maximum allowed. I added some BOINC programs to it and everything seemed fine.

For clarification, a Samsung N220 isn't a Laptop, But a Netbook, powered by an Intel Atom N450 processor, I have one myself, It is hardly the speediest thing out there.

Thanks for your reply, I did download the link you sent me, which was useful.

I think most of the rise in memory use, I will have to live with. However, the main problem seems to be with the Einstein Home Screensaver, as can be seen in this link - http://www.johnfairweather42.webspace.virginmedia.com/Einstein_ScreenSaver.jpg

Somehow it seems to have been corrupted, after I installed Windows 10, not sure why.

Recently, I put a comment (as below, in between two lines of "=======") in a thread and I was told to put it in a separate thread, so here it is:-

Some years ago, I bought a Samsung N220 laptop, with Windows 7 (Home version) on it, for general use - I updated it to 2048 MB RAM, the maximum allowed. I added some BOINC programs to it and everything seemed fine.

Recently I updated the laptop to Windows 10 and found that without BOINC even installed, the laptop was running at 60% of memory. With BOINC (latest version) installed it was using 95%. Other than BOINC nothing else should be running, other than background tasks, but looking at the laptop's Task Manager a lot of stuff seems to be running. I suppose my solution would be to buy a larger memory-sized laptop (any good ones around?), or to go back to Windows 7 - any suggestions?

===============================================================================================================================================================
Would be interested in a solution to this Windows 10 problem.

As currently using a Laptop (Samsung N220), Max RAM 2048MB, which is installed. BOINC worked perfectly ok with Windows 7, now with Windows 10, it uses 95% of RAM & sometimes hangs up.

Maybe it would be easiest if you started a new topic for that problem, as it seems quite different from the "always in use" problem here.

Then, plenty of additional information of your system would be needed also. Do you want to completely dedicate that laptop for BOINC usage? If so... the computer could be setup in a bit different way. Maybe there is useless things running at the background at the moment. Maybe something there could be cleaned up or stopped from wasting CPU time and eating memory.

Well, I have been running BONIC for about five years and I have never had this problem before, with the Screen Savers.

However, I have re-installed 7.4.27, without V Box, re-booted and the Screen-Savers now seem to mostly working ok.

Thanks for your help & advice.

I have just installed BONIC 7.4.27 (+ V Box) to both my PC and Laptop, where I am running Windows 7 (32 bit) on both machines. (I have installed V Box, since it was offered.)

Apart from my PC having the Blue Screen od Death, it seems OK now, neither will run the BONIC Screen Savers (just get a blank screen), even though I have re-booted both machines - any idea what the problem is?

Even though I have been using BOINC, for the past five years, it is only in the past month, that I find that I have been receiving the message - "Low On
Memory".

Even though I have un-ticked the box, in BOINC Manager (V7.2.42), "Leave Applications in Memory, when Suspended", I find that some of these processes are still running (seem to be the same ones), when I have closed BOINC down, by looking at my PC's processes.

A solution (that sometimes works), is to tick & un-tick this box, then save it and reopen it and to close it again, leaving it un-ticked.

Any solutions?
12) Message boards : Questions and problems : A Query about my PC locking up, after taking control, after running BOINC (Message 52980)

Post:
I run BOINC, 24/7, both on my PC and my Notebook, which I just had re-built with a 1TB hard drive, so I haven't had this problem yet (maybe).

My PC (contains 2x250GB hard drives), occasionally locks up, when I move the mouse, when I try to take control of my PC again, after running BOINC. But, even then it still takes about five minutes, for me to regain possession of my PC again, it being in a locked-up state.

Does anybody know, how I can stop my PC locking up - run less projects, or change some settings?

In the last few hours, I have received private messages from all the ten projects I am subscribed to, inviting me to log on to these sites. This I did, but in most cases the link did not work. (I didn't download these e-mails, but looked at them elsewhere.)

Are these genuine e-mails, or is it a spam?

This is the first time I have received these messages, but I have just started using the Skynet project.

Ok, selecting one single item, say 'climaticprediction.net' -

If you look at boinc2.jpg and boinc3.jpg on this link -

http://www.vetts.org.uk/boinc2.jpg

you will see that I have selected 'climaticprediction.net'. But it doesn't matter whether I have select 'suspend' or 'resume', it still stays as 'project suspended by user' - any idea why?
