I can't even attach to the project properly. The account gets created, I can log in etc, but the client just fails at:

No message boards either, which is a bit naughty.

I personally feel that my equipment is no longer wanted or needed in the Boinc projects

I agree completely. GPUs have made my CPU-based contribution virtually worthless for a lot of projects. They are too old to accept decent GPUs, so now when they die I don't bother to repair them, I just throw them away. My single bottom-of-the-range GPU does as much work as most of the rest of my CPU-only machines put together. Depressing, isn't it? I'm just not interested enough to invest any money in a 'decent' machine (most of my stuff is $20 junk, my last couple of machines were free). On the bright side though if more work is being done by GPUs (even if not by me) that's got to be a Good Thing.

The whole credit thing is a red herring when in comes to cross-project comparisons. The best thing to do is just stop exporting stats. Just kill that function in the next BOINC server version, the stats sites will all be frozen in time, and everybody will be happy. Seriously, trust me on this.

That didn't last long - The spam is back :(

but no way is Bitcoin Utopia the second-most powerful supercomputer in the world

It might not be the second-most powerful general purpose, programmable supercomputer in the world, but those little single-purpose ASICs are orders of magnitude better than any CPU or GPU for the intended task ;) Much like Colossus - Would have been a terrible performer for general tasks, but it was pretty good at cracking enigma codes :)

It's a very old problem - I have it on an Ubuntu 8.04 machine running BOINC 5.10.45 - As soon as I power down the router it shreds all of the WUs in the cache.

Bit of a nuisnace really as that machine loses it's network connection nearly every day :(

The server status page shows the upload/download server disabled (which might just be the usual server bug), but more relevant, the feeder is not running.

My long running task ended after 2,717,795 seconds. That's 755 hours, or 31 of your Earth days.

The outcome? Yeah, you guessed it ...

"Completed, too late to validate"

Thanks. A. Bunch.

No message boards still, no sign of any admin anywhere. Brilliant.

Cheers,

Al.

Message boards have disappeared again :(

I thought the admin might be showing a little more interest in his project, so I started another WU. 10 days ago. 251 hours, 53%, no checkpointing, task one day overdue.

Oh what fun!

Al.

You might want to raise the limit on the number of tasks in progress and lengthen the reporting deadline to make the project a bit more like nearly every other BOINC project out there :)

Gave up with my one WU - 180 hours, stuck at same percentage for days. Had to reboot, no checkpointing, you know the rest ;)

Still no message boards either, which is a bit naughty.

I don't think I'll revisit this one as I don't feel a burning need to help mankind by solving reversi puzzles ;)

Yes, it's Non-CPU-Intensive. Haven't noticed any impact on my bandwidth at all; I'm a very light internet user so any extra traffic would be obvious. The WUs are short, and there's a 6 hour holdoff between getting new WUs so I can't see it stressing anyones connection. Which is nice.

Post:
My slowest/oldest desktop is a non-HT 1.8GHz P4 running Ubuntu 8.04. Built and rebuilt many times from bits. Only really there for trying out linux-only projects rather than serious number crunching. If there's no new projects to try I just leave it running Asteroids or Primaboinca as at least it scrapes a modest amount of credit on those :)

Oh, got a fairly recent dual-core (or is it HT?) netbook thingy running XP that's too small and slow too use for anything useful so that gets used to try out new projects but otherwise just crunches Primaboinca and still gets a dismal amount of work done.

Cheers,

Al.

I run all of my machines (mostly XP) without any sort of protection at all, other than being behind the SPI firewall in the router. Never had any sort of virus on any of them. The only machine that gets infected around here is the one operated by an idiot user (the wife, bless her!). I just image that regularly and restore it if needs be. Never, ever, had any infection on any of my headless BOINC farm (more of a flowerpot than a farm to be fair).

What is it with project admins? Why do they never check their message boards?

The recent torrent of spam has rendered a couple of projects boards unusable. Some project's 'report post' facility doesn't work, other projects it's clearly being ignored.

Perhaps these are just zombie projects - The admins are slumped, lifeless, over flickering CRT monitors, festooned in cobwebs, while rats chew at their decaying flesh. Meanwhile the work generators churn out tasks for hungry crunchers who blissfully believe that their work is useful and valued ...

Admins: Sort. it. Out.

Al.

Linux runs Boinc 20-30% faster than under Windows.

But BOINC itself does very little, the time saving would be negligable. It's the science apps themselves that need performance improvements.
