1) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC screen saver preventing monitor from sleeping (Message 50898)

"Version 7.0.29 - 7.0.65

released: 17 April 2013

•Fix: Properly shutdown BOINC Screensaver on certain types on machines. We don't know what the exact trigger was but it seemed to affect .5% of people using the screensaver. (Windows Only)".

Just wanted to point out its definitely Not fixed on version 7.0.64, or any B4 that for that matter as long as I can remember I've been having issues with my BOINC SS, continued from my old PC to my new PC. I just did a clean install of 7/64 & my monitor wont sleep at all, the last few months B4 that it would eventually. I enable the default windows SS & NP at all, works perfect.

No idea where the call to shutdown comes from? the motherboard I assume? ASUS in both my old & new PC. the rest AMD based. I find it hard to believe that I'm the one having all the ".5%' issues with the BOINC SS LOL!...

As far as the whole F-Secure & Uploads thing? -

I did a Remote Session with their Tech Support last night & they gathered all the necessary data to ‘Escalate’ the problem etc.. very strange stuff, but their working on it! :-)

@mo.v-

If you use MSE?, you might want to check out this report I just seen the other day? - http://securitywatch.pcmag.com/none/303867-kaspersky-and-norton-earn-aaa-protection-rating

“McAfee and Microsoft didn't do well enough to earn any award at all.” so Bad they didn't even get an F-?! LOL!... from a Free product you can kind of understand?, but from one of the Biggest Paid AV in the world?! = OUCH!?!...

I also used MSE up to about a year ago when wile casually going to Amazon.ca? BLAM!?! I got nailed by a ‘Fake AV’. since that day I've Literally tried every AV/FW known to man! LOL!. I finally recently settled on F-Secure because The Fins are Good People!(among other things ofcorse) I'd rather have an ‘Over Secure’ Security program then one that doesn't deserve a score?! LOL!.

@TJ,

I'm also having the exact same 'upload' issue with FS-IS 2013 & have been working with F-Secure Tech Support on it. they are aware of the issue.

BOINC runs fine with FS-IS completely un-installed, re-installing FS-IS the issue re-appears etc.. so its definitely on F-Secures end.

Unfortunately you cant just ‘exclude the BOINC data directory’ etc. with FS-IS as you can with many AV/FW programs for some strange reason. hopefully they will allow more user control in future.

TY. Ron.

Anyone?. on my original ‘Simple Question’?. is it Normal or Not?.

I’ve re-installed 7.0.28 with no change. I’ve re-attached all my six projects with no change. I've been in contact with my AV support.

After all this?, right now I’ve had one project of the six running all day? & that only seems to me because when I re-attached it downloaded eight WU’s?, everything else is at a standstill either ready to report or uploading?, yay!...

I don't know?!, maybe thats the way version 7 does its thing now?!, thats all I asked?. is it normal the way it works now?, or not?. Simple enough you would think?...

If not?, is their a FAQ on how to revert back to the last Good version?, 6.12.34... AGAIN... you know?, where all projects ran?, uploaded, & reported on a regular basis?... the update button worked etc. etc.. The Good Old Days...

Please & TY.

dont see any override one sorry.

And oh yes I remember going to check my settings at WCG because I was recieving GPU WU's that I did not want?. maybe their prefrences are not in sync yet with the newer BOINC clients?.

As a long-time version.6 user I thought id give version.7 another try after a clean install of Vista. I also have a new antivirus.

Is it normal with version.7 to have approximately 20 Simap work units ‘ready to report’ for days?, 20 Poem ‘uploading’ for days?, 10 Rosetta ‘uploading’ for days?, & another 10 SETI ‘uploading’ for days?.

Hitting ‘update’ on each project does nothing?. hitting ‘do network communication’ does nothing?. they all say ‘internet access is ok’. the projects are all up & running on their websites. my only project that seems ok is WCG.

Yes I know all about just leaving it alone etc. etc.?. just making sure this is normal with virsion.7 as I also have a new AV.

Thank you.

All I know is if I have X number of active projects then I want at least one WU running/waiting to run for each of those projects, just like 6.x did so well for years.

I install 7.x & it goes from that to only 4 of my 8 active projects having 4 WU each!?!...

Just because people use BOINC doesn't mean they are computer experts who understand all the jargon etc. or that they are comfortable fooling around with settings, if you know the dame answer then please just give it?.

Re-installed 6.12.34 after worthless babble for answers & nothing from ageless who I’d hoped for a simple straight answer, working perfect again now anyways, no thanks to this forum...

well I set it to those numbers & now its even worse?!~.

Now its running only two of my eight active projects with 13 WU between them!?! LOL!

Thats just great! thanks alot...

Going to re-install 6.12.34 I guess.

so if I set it to -

"In 7.0 you set minimum work buffer to 1.0 and max additional work buffer to 0.01"

-it will run like it should?, like it used to?

What keeps you from trying it? ;-)

Because I just run it?, I dont make it, let alone like to fool with it?. thats why I thought i'd ask first? & provide some feedback wile I was at it as a longtime user?. is that ok?.

well I'm sorry but I hate the new method.

I'm attached to ten projects, eight are active & the two are not, & I'll miss WU when they are available using this method.

So far after running 7.0.25 for a few days now it now only ever runs three of my eight active projects?!. & when it does fetch work it fetches a bunch of WU’s from only three projects.

so if I set it to -

"In 7.0 you set minimum work buffer to 1.0 and max additional work buffer to 0.01"

-it will run like it should?, like it used to?.

Thanks.

Are there any messages in the Messages tab of BOINC manager concerning the lack of memory?

-O yes,I checked/updated everything.

quote:Are we talking GB or MB? What's your path to the BOINC Data Dir and Program Dir?

Not that it matters for jobs in progress. BUT, some jobs have long apart checkpoints and will not show a progress in the %. Piece of your startup BOINC log and a section of where the respective jobs start and run always helps to progress diagnostics.

ttyl

- I'm sorry,I did mean MB not GB,my total BOINC disc usage ATM is only 183MB,got mixed up in my panic I guess! LOL!,so far from the 100GB max.

Anyways,it finally started running again,it just seemed to go on strike for a day!?,not sure why but seems to be running ok now.

Thank you for your replies.

-(Been running problem free for months now, tried uninstalling & re-installing the latest version. only thing changed recently was I added both rosetta & docking to my WCG,total of three projects)-

all of a sudden today computations seem to just stop, both the 'elapsed time' & the 'to completion' times are still moving 'UP'(as in the the elapsed time is counting up & so is the to completion time, because it is not computing) yet the the 'progress' is not moving.

The only thing 'I THINK' maybe had screwed something up was I had went over the 'use no more the 100GB of disk space'(again,I think),so I removed rosetta that seemed to be HUGE(143GB on top of my WCG & docking),but still no change.

Don't remember this happening B4 so any ideas? please & TY.
