Run BOINC as a daemon on Mac

Anyway... steps to follow, please read first, before diving head long in and instead of saying "I already done all that"... just do it again.

1. Find the IP address of the computer doing the controlling. Write that down. You can read here how to do that.

2. With this information go to the Mac that needs to be controlled remotely.
Stop its BOINC from running: BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Shut down connected client->OK->Cancel, followed by BOINC Manager->File->Exit.

3. Navigate to the BOINC Data directory which on OSX is by default (if you didn't change it) in /Library/Applications Support/BOINC/
If you're using Windows on this machine, the default directory is at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\

4. Edit gui_rpc_auth.cfg with a text editor and take out the 32 character line that's there. Add a password of choice and save this file. Make sure not to end the password with a line-end (no pressing Enter/Return). Also make sure that the file extension is .cfg, not .cfg.txt and else rename the file to use the correct extension.

5. Edit or make a remote_hosts.cfg file in the directory and add to it the IP address of the remote computer, you just write it down somewhere, remember?
Save the file and make sure that the file extension is .cfg, not .cfg.txt and else rename the file to use the correct extension.

6. Find out the IP address of this remote computer. See step 1 for the how to.

7. Start BOINC Manager. If you have BOINC installed as a daemon, starting BOINC Manager will start the daemon.

8. On the computer doing the remote controlling open BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Select computer.
In the Host Name path fill in the IP address of the remote computer.
In the Password path fill in the password you added to the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file on the remote computer. The password is case sensitive.

If this doesn't work immediately, it is possible you have to wait for the network broadcast, which can take up to 45 minutes. Else just reboot both machines.

just an fyi all my computers have manually assigned ip's but i will try that

hey ageless. is there a way to force a connection? my web browser can see the other computer, but for some oddball reason the boinc manager cant. I am starting to think it may be a problem with my router. What do you think?
