Hi,

you can tell us here how long you prefer your workunit and we'll try to implement it into a next feature of TrackJack-app for http://www.aerospaceresearch.net/constellation

this could also help other projects to find adequate wu-runtimes .

Please, vote here http://www.twiigs.com/poll/Technology/Computers/67668!

2) Message boards : Server programs : Why are multiplied WUs called Results? (Message 35854)

Hi,

I really would like to know why WUs multiplied by the quorum number are called results? that's somehow confusing me, because for me results are the processed WUs and its solved solution in form of a result file including al instances of tasks that lead to this validated result.
For me it makes more sence to call multiplied WUs "tasks" instead of results, because on when on server they haven't been processed yet and they are not send back, only their result files are send back.

Why has been this name chose and what do the rest of us think about it?
I'm always confused :)

3) Message boards : Web interfaces : Forum: Changing categories and adding sub-categories? (Message 34765)
Posted 20 Sep 2010 by -horn-
Post:
Hi everybody!

I'm checking how to change an allready existing forum, like adding categories, re-arranging them and also adding sub-categories for usage in translation sections (English, German, etc. main categories and then the sets of sub-categories.

First thing I would like to know is how to change an allready created forum? Is it possible to just change the create_forums.php in the way I want to have it, use it and let the script do its magic and then the old set of categories is overridden and there is the new input? And what happens to allready posted threads inside, when I want to do that when needed after the project went live? Will those disappear or be in the same forum's "id" how matter they are called now? Right now there is the standard set http://aerospaceresearch.net/constellation/forum_index.php and I want to change it. If this will mean that allready posted threads will be gone, that's okay at this early stage. But then how to do that without losses, too?

And then there is internationality. We would like to offer a German and at least an English branch looking like
1. German forum
1.1. News
1.2. Project
1.2.1 Number Crunching
1.2.2 Problems
1.3 Cafe
...

2. English forum
2.1. News
2.2. Project
2.2.1 Number Crunching
2.2.2 Problems
2.3 Cafe
...

Ho to do that right, because there are $catid = create_category(0, "TITLE", 0); and how to tell the the script the "level of category" and is it possible to put two of these commands back to back? Is one of these numbers the category level and if so, which one?

Thank you in advance,

Andreas

for sure the current one is not made for it, SO I give an idea for a new mode.
nothing more, nothing less then just an idea to let boinc grow inother direction and offering more features to projects, that can't use boinc right now.

and as far as I know some projects would like to have a VM modei boinc, whether it is for coding an app once and let it run in VM mode on all systems.

I'm not asking to get it this month, it's just a new idea for your roadmap

Hi,

I think it's not clear what I mean.
For sure I could attach my profile to several projects (that's what I have :)), but in case that you have just one project, that you like and support, and this will run out of WUs, then your client has nothing to do. And perhaps you haven't recogized it for some time or doesn't want to attachto another project, the one attched project should have an option to send other projects WU (and their app of course) to you during their out-of-work time.

I will give an example:
The YOYO project and RNA World share some admins, so they could deicde then "in case of out-of-work YOYO will send RNA World WU to their attached clients, so that they have anything to do.
Or the one admin is a friend of another projects admin and they do a buddy deal to do a "call forwarding".
In these cases the user doesn't have to do anything and change their share ratios or whatever.

Post:
Hi,

I had been working with computational fluid dynamics tool called Fluent for some time and during this time I also had the chance to let my simulation model parallely computed on a cluster system. for this the mesh was parted. Now I thought this would be cool to have for other projects in boinc, but currently this would take to long, because the parted mesh need to join their results for each iteration step and can work for their own afterwards.
If this will happen several 1000 times this can't be done with a current boinc system. So I would like to give the idea to do some kind of VM-mode, where several clients can work together for one WU. this will be difficult for internetconnected client, but on a campus scale this could be fine! because you need to have all contributing clients available during this time and the generated traffic for joining the results at each iteration step is also a big problem when clients are connected with ordinary internet. So on first step this should be an alternative to creating your own cluster system, and in another mode then it could be done by clients via internet, but these must follow strict rules like being online during the run and using a high-speed conection fullfilling the requirements, so basicly you should know all participants :).

But I really like the idea to add a new purpose to boinc.

I allready asked OpenFOAM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenFOAM what they think about this and what they would need, and they really need the possibility to compute parallel parts.
But perhaps boinc could give those opensource software an easy way to create a cluster system, so that they don't have to code that for their own, even if this will mean that the clients are more limited to participate.

Perhaps this will add a nice new feature to the swiss army knife boinc :).

Hi,

if there is something like this already implemented so why isn't no project I'm attached to using it?
Like down projects like orbit@home or lhc@home?
My client is asking for WUs and doesnt get any and I don't want to deattach because I could miss their restart.

9) Message boards : Server programs : BOINC Server VM - VMDKs not working with Virtualbox (Message 32194)

hi,

hopfully my threads fits to this categorie.
I tried several times to import the VMDK files for the boinc virtual server into virtualbox and it always fails when it wants to creates root structure and then displaying, that sda1 isn't there.
I asked a friend of mine and he also encounters it.
Both of us use WinXP.

Is there something wrong or are the vmdks for virtualbox unchecked? I just installed vmware player and they work fine (because they are made for it).

Best regards,

Andreas

Post:
hi,

perhaps that's a wanted feature for you boinc coders and I want at least share my idea.

Not all users uses BAM! and other services managing their 1000+1 attched projects. And these users sometimes have only some few projects attched to their clients, so there is no need for boinc.

In case that their projects don't send WUs thei are idle and not participating. So I think about some kind of redirection, that a project can decide, what else's WU they can send or just send a command to the idle user to grab some other projects WUs during the time the primary project won't send any WUs.
The primary project decides what befriended project this can be.
Just think about it like a temporary power supply. Until main power is offline one ore more auxiliary supplies are used until main power is back online.

perhaps some projects are competitors, but over all it's about sharing idle pc time and perhaps it can be optimized by such a feature.

So what do you think?

I started a discussion here http://www.boinctreffen.de/viewforum.php?f=67 because I'm German and so I hope to start something for my region :)

but perhaps there are other possible regions and we should all stay connected and keep in touch.

Please feel free to use this thread for your planing :)

Hi,

I'm a hobby coder and learning things by redoing examples. that's what keeps me away from BOINC, because I find it difficult to start as a bginner.
I allready head a look if there are and wherethere are workshops in my area, but the one I found was in Spain (Barcelona I think) and not even close to Germany ;).

So I would like to attend regional workshops and perhaps it would be nice to have a mao of possible "mentors" in my area so that we could meet and do a "small" workshop.
And in addition, it would be cool to have some lecture material.
This could also been used by professors in universities and their presentations.
There are aften working groups in/at universities, as I experienced it by myself, so you could reach both and perhaps create some regional "clubs".

What do you think?

14) Message boards : Promotion : boinc on smartphones? (Message 31599)

Post:
hi,

I THINK it will be difficult to for some projects, because some WUs are really big sized and the storage capacities of some devices are really "small" and the biggest point, some WU take ages to finish on normal CPUs, and will even take much longer on smartphone CPUs, designed for low power consumtion and low performance.

in my opinion that would only possible with a two path strategy for WUs. like big chunks for PCs and small chunks for smartphones.
I think this will be difficult.
but that's just for current smartphones, somewhen they will be better capable ;).

but I also had such an idea and would use it ;).

Hi,

as I mentioned in my previous thread I would like to use BOINC for my own project but I would like to code in JAVA.
I read the java description pagein your wiki but I couldn't find an example in trac.
Isn't there any example, or is it just hidden and I couldn't find it :).

I would really like to know how to do that because I don't want to switch from java to c++ :)

Hi,

First of all I really like BOINC and the broader idea about BOINC, so that I spend some of my idle PC time for some projects.

Me and a friend also have some ideas, that would be nice to have BOINC'ed and therefore I had a look into your documantaries but neither I nor my friend are professional programmers so it's hard to start.

So is there some kind of step-by-step instructions for beginners? Some virtual sandboxes (not the vm server, I found that) or other "easy" to start examples?
In your track system are some examples but I find them quite difficult, because I don't know what's important and what's not.

I would also visit a nice person explaining it personally, when this person is living in Germany :).

Thanks in advance foryour help,

hi,

that's clear, but it would still be nice to have a portbale version without a need to install.

sometimes, I have to switch my laptops (work laptops) but I just want to have one instance running. so I wouldn't have to in-and deinstall versions back and forth.

is there a version that doesn't need to be installed?
I would like to use such a version, like a portable version, so I can use it anywhere I want, where admins normaly don't allow to install any software. :)
