1) Message boards : Questions and problems : Data directory in Ubuntu (Message 84315)

Does anyone know why the Ubuntu version does not honour any data directory setting (BOINC_DIR) I might set in /etc/default/boinc-client?

And does anyone know what I have to do to prevent boinc starting with /var/lib/boinc-client as the directory, and have a directory of my own choosing instead?

I have just upgraded Ubuntu to 10.10, and find that the foreground text color in the Boinc Manager windows has changed from black to something like #E0D0D3. None of my other apps seems to have been affected in this way. Is this a Boinc Manager bug?

My system runs three projects on an AMD Phenom2 x4 with Boinc 6.10.17 on Ubuntu 10.04

I completed a climate prediction work unit, but a new one was not downloaded so I reset the project. This resulted in three work units being downloaded all of which which boinc immediately ran as priority tasks (deadlines are November), thus not sharing time with other projects.

I've got round this by suspending two of the three work units and things are running normally, with other projects getting their share of time.

But why did this happen? Was it a problem with the Climate server, or with Boinc? Or is it just to be expected?

Thanks, but that didn't fix it. According to 'set' I have
BROWSER=/usr/bin/firefox
and when I click the button, boincmgr's status line says 'Launching browser', but KImageMapEditor pops up instead.

I guess it's something Ubuntu-related. I'll have to wait until the package appears as an update.

Obviously not, or else KImageMapEditor wouldn't be called.

Well, actually, it is. The Ubuntu way to set this is System ->Preferences->Preferred Applications. Here the web browser is set as Firefox and it is set to open a new link in this browser.

I have just installed BOINC 6.6.36 and find that I cannot access the websites or forums for any project in the BOINC manager. With the previous version a browser window would open and show the relevant project web page. Now, a program (KImageMapEditor) which I didn't even know I had on my PC opens with the message that the file does not exist.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 and installed 6.6.36 using boinc_6.6.36_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh

Is there something I need to do to configure it so that I can use the website buttons?

I'm now pretty sure that the explanation I gave above is the right one. It looks like a kernel bug in which /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/ignore_nice_load now has no effect.

My concern was that if the temperature was 54C in a fairly chilly Spring, what might it be like if we ever get any really hot weather.

Also, I had always thought (perhaps erroneously) that the lower the temperature the better, even if the chip was rated up to - say - 70C.

Actually, I think I have now found the explanation.

It seems that the default value for /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/ignore_nice_load has changed from 1 to 0, and that there also seems to be a bug such that if you change it to 1 the processor frequency is still scaled up when running a NI 19 process like Boinc.

I've not noticed any change in processing times, though I don't have records to make comparisons, and of course don't know that I'm getting the same sorts of work units.

But what you say sounds in line with what I've now found out about a change in CPU frequency scaling, since I've now found this:-
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cpufreqd/+bug/368809
that might have something to do with it. Though if it's that, I would have expected other people to have noticed.

I'd be happier if I could revert to the previous behaviour.

Since upgrading from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04, running boinc-client seems to have as increased impact on my PC.

Prior to the upgrade boinc added roughly 10 degrees C to the CPU temperatures. Since upgrading this figure is about 22 degrees C.

Any ideas as to why this might be?

The boinc version in Ubuntu 9.04 is 6.2.18 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, the kernel is 2.6.28-11-generic on an AMD64 2GB PC.
