Sorry Jord, as BarryAZ pointed out SETI went down for a little while earlier. I missed that one. Then when you posted it had come back up. When I posted it was back down again for the count.

Jord,
As of about 1315 UTC SETI has been down. No homepage, forums or anything. Cricket graph shows everything flatlined. Did you refresh when you tried or just open the tab? A few people have mentioned it on Lunatic's site.

4) Message boards : Questions and problems : Why does BOINC constantly asks for GPU-work in projects where there is no GPU-app? (Message 34518)
Posted 4 Sep 2010 by perryjay
Post:
It's really not as stupid as it seems. GPU work is still new to BOINC and more and more projects are adding GPU Apps. BOINC is just making sure it doesn't miss something.

You may want to add a brief description of the Optimized Apps for the different projects and a bit about the Lunatic's site and the other sites for the other projects. And also, app_info and cc_config files.
6) Message boards : Questions and problems : idle / in-use (Message 33536)

Almost. What i.e., 'suspend if CPU exceeds X%' value? means is that if you have something else running that uses over 75% of your CPU, BOINC will suspend itself to get out of the way so the other program can work. Most people have found this annoying and have either set it to a much higher value or to 0 which disables it completely. This was put in because some people complained that BOINC was interfering with their other programs or games.

As to the idle/in use states, this tells BOINC you have moved your mouse and for it to go away and let you work. When your mouse hasn't moved for a set amount of time BOINC will start again. The Use at most X% of memory when computer is in use limits the amount of RAM so that BOINC doesn't hog too much and other things can have what they need.
7) Message boards : Questions and problems : Cores vs Threads ? (hyperthread matter?) (Message 33473)

Post:
Darwincollins, explain to them that BOINC doesn't actually run at 100%, it uses the extra CPU cycles that aren't being used by anything else. That brings your CPU usage up to 100%. As other work asks for more space, BOINC cuts back out of the way and takes less of the share of cycles.

To get back on topic though, some of the people with i7s have tried running both with and without HT on. With HT the work units were slower but there were 8 of them at a time because they are running two WUs on each core. I believe they decided it was better with HT on but not twice as fast. If I remember right it was about like having two extra cores speed wise.
8) Message boards : Questions and problems : Why Boinc features become broken?? (Message 32953)

Post:
There was one version that suddenly failed to recognize CUDA cards and so all the work units labled for CUDA were suddenly dumped.

You may be thinking of people trying to optimize with Lunatic's package. When SETI started sending out 6.09 WUs to take advantage of the new 2.3 DLLs. The Lunatic's opts were still set for 6.08s. As soon as you turned it on it would dump all the 6.09s and ask for 6.08s.

There was also a problem where, I think, a combination of a newer BOINC and new DLLs were showing less memory. This caused some GPUs on the borderline memorywise that were working before to continue to ask for GPU work then not run it due to not enough memory.

Vader was picking on Ptolemy and everyone had left but Eric. He tried to reboot Vader a couple of times but no go so he pulled the plug on Vader. Things should go back to normal when the guys get in this morning.

In a way, I do agree with Les, you do tend to ramble. But on the other hand I have been following this thread with interest. I hope you are able to get this problem solved not only for your own team but to keep it from happening to others.

Just an FYI, uploads have started going in to SETI. Servers are still down for maintainance though so they won't report just yet.

Well, Eric was in working late last night, maybe someone came in early this morning to work on the problem.

Ok, seems to be back up now.

I was right, Eric is in and working already this morning. Here's hoping they can find and fix the problem quickly.

SETI's air conditioning in their server closet went down and they have had to shut down most of their servers to prevent heat damage. They will be back up as soon as they can get it fixed.

Seti is down again. Even the home page only comes up partially and gives this message "Unable to connect to database - please try again later Error: 2013Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 113" Not sure how long it has been down this time.
