1) Message boards : BOINC client : allow multiple clients (Message 72288)

Post:
I followed the instruction here: http://efmer.com/forum/index.php?topic=856.0

On a Windows XP x86 PC it worked in past.

Now an other PC with Windows 8.1 x64 it don't work.

From the 'log':
BoincTasks version: 1.67
Language ---- User: 1031 (DEU), System: 1031 (DEU), Selected: 1033 (ENU) Used: 1033 (ENU)
Maximum number of computers: Unlimited
Computers ---- BOINC2 , IP: localhost2
Computers ---- blabla , IP: localhost
Start BOINC client ---- The BOINC client started OK
Connect ---- Connected to: Host: blabla, IP: localhost, Port: 31416, BOINC Version: 7.6.22
Logging ---- Start debug mode
Connect, init ---- Host: BOINC2, IP: localhost2, Port: 31426, connection error

What's different between XP and 8.1?

As I installed BOINC v7.6.22, there was during installation something like 'allow BOINC access to folder' or something...
IIRC, this wasn't happen on the XP PC, with an older BOINC version (for 2+ years in past).

Now on the 8.1 PC I need to allow someone the access to the BOINC2 folder?

It's important where the BOINC2 folder is?
Maybe it must be in the C:\ProgramData\ folder?

Maybe I must adjust the Windows Firewall?
Open/allow a port?

It's important how I adjusted the Windows Firewall?
I can chose 'home' and 'guest/public' network.
Which I must chose normally, and/or if I want a 2nd BOINC client?

Thanks.

BTW.
In the BOINC2 folder is:
notices (folder)
all_projects_list.xml
cc_config.xml (with <allow_multiple_clients>1...)
client_state.xml
client_state_prev.xml
coproc_info.xml
daily_xfer_history.xml
gui_rpc_auth.cfg
stderrgpudetect.txt
stdoutgpudetect.txt
time_stats_log

BTW.
As I executed the .bat file with (Fred's example):
"C:\Program Files\BOINC\boinc.exe" --allow_multiple_clients --dir C:\ProgramData\BOINC2 --gui_rpc_port 31426
...a command prompt was open and the 2nd client was connected with BoincTasks.

But, IIRC, the localhost (1st client) wasn't connected with BoincTasks.

Maybe I need now with Win8.1 to start the 2nd client via .bat file?

If I 'install' a 2nd client (execution of the .bat file), BoincTasks and the 1st client can run, or all BOINC stuff need to be stopped/exited?

Additional...

Also if I use boinccmd.exe with --network_available just backlogged uploads are retried. Downloads not.

I had internet problems, so BOINC couldn't upload and download.

Internet was again available, the network is set to always, but I clicked again to always for to retry backlogged uploads and downloads (in past this worked very well).

But with BOINC v7.6.22 (Ageless Mod .23 (for better detecting of AMD VGA cards)) just the uploads are retried. The downloads are still in backlog.

This is OK and wanted, or it's a bug?

It would be nice if this feature could be enabled again.

In which formerly BOINC version this worked properly?

Thanks.

You mean this?
OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 0: Fiji (driver version 1912.5 (VM), device version OpenCL 2.0 AMD-APP (1912.5), 4096MB, 4096MB available, 5376 GFLOPS peak)

OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 2: Fiji (driver version 1912.5 (VM), device version OpenCL 2.0 AMD-APP (1912.5), 4096MB, 4096MB available, 5376 GFLOPS peak)
OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 3: Fiji (driver version 1912.5 (VM), device version OpenCL 2.0 AMD-APP (1912.5), 4096MB, 4096MB available, 5376 GFLOPS peak)
OpenCL CPU: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630 v2 @ 2.60GHz (OpenCL driver vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., driver version 1912.5 (sse2,avx), device version OpenCL 1.2 AMD-APP (1912.5))

I opened boinc.exe with a Hex Editor.
There is the line, which should be displayed/shown.

BTW. Is there a way to edit something with a Hex Editor, that just 'AMD Radeon R9 Fury X' will be displayed/shown (instead of all 'R9 Fury/R9 Nano/R9 Fury X/R9 Fury X2') - now?
(With the old ATI cards (CAL) it was possible to edit the 'Coprocessor'.)

Thanks.

I installed BOINC v7.6.22.
Still just: AMD Fiji (4096MB) OpenCL: 2.0

[EDIT: BTW. Crimson v15.12 installed.]

I understood something wrong?
There should stay now: AMD Radeon R9 Fury/R9 Nano/R9 Fury X/R9 Fury X2 (Fiji) (4096MB) driver: 1912.5 OpenCL: 2.0 ?

Or I must install something additional that the above mentioned will be shown?

Thanks.

Post:
With the newer BOINC versions (>v7.6.9) the new AMD VGA cards will be shown like the older ones (incl. driver version)?

Example: AMD AMD Radeon HD 7870/7950/7970/R9 280X series (Tahiti) (3072MB) driver: 1.4.1720 OpenCL: 1.2

My AMD Radeon R9 Fury X's (with BOINC v7.6.9) - just: AMD Fiji (4096MB) OpenCL: 2.0

Maybe if still not - instead of OpenCL Name value BOINC could use OpenCL Board name?

Thanks.
7) Message boards : BOINC client : Why no work request if backlogged DLs? (Message 38323)
Posted 10 Jun 2011 by Dirk Sadowski
Post:
Hello community!

I'm curious about why BOINC don't request new work if in BOINC/transfers are backlogged DLs (also if '> CPUs x2' ULs).

E.g. at S@h (my primary project) the UL,DL and scheduler service is on different server.

Sometimes the UL or DL server is not reachable. Then BOINC don't request new work. Why?
Why not to request new work and UL or DL later if it's again possible?

Then later if the UL or DL is again possible, then BOINC can't reach the scheduler server because of overloaded internet connection at S@h.

It would be better if BOINC request work, although UL or DL isn't temporary possible. This would be also better for the scheduler server.

Thanks!

EDIT: Maybe as cc_config.xml option.
8) Message boards : BOINC client : Why 2 x UL / DL simultaneously / project ? (Message 25950)
Posted 10 Jul 2009 by Dirk Sadowski
Post:

I'm curious, why BOINC have at every project 2 uploads and 2 downloads simultaneously.

Why not 1 UL and 1 DL simultaneously?

It's faster with 2/2?

----------------------------------------

AFAIK, I could enable with cc_config.xml more and less communications..
..when it's better to enable more or less communications?

If a project have a high server load/traffic and BOINC can't reach the server well.. it's better to have more UL/DL or less UL/DL simultaneously, for to have better chance to UL/DL well?

Thanks! :-)
9) Message boards : BOINC client : Some BUGs found in BOINC V6.6.20 (Message 25024)
Posted 23 May 2009 by Dirk Sadowski
Post:

BTW.
Thanks for nothing.

Now you deleted the ticket.

You make it not very interesting for people to support the devs.

It's a prob with my PC, I don't think so.

Like I said, BOINC V6.4.5 and V6.4.7 and V6.6.5 and V6.6.11 can manage/support ~ 3,700 tasks cache.

In the time I had ~ 3,700 tasks on the PC I updated to BOINC V6.6.14 and later V6.6.20.
Both can't support/manage ~ 3,700 WUs.

In TaskManager I could see that the CPU support dropped 1/2 and more, sometimes long time to 0 %.
Also the calculation time of the SAME AR-WUs increased much, from ~ 8 min. to ~ 30 min. .

BOINC Manager was opened in this test.

Only boinc.exe peaks.
No boincmgr.exe peaks.

Why I know this.. because of server probs at Berkeley I ran down to ~ 2,500 tasks on my PC.
Then I gave V6.6.14 and later V6.6.20 a last try.. and surprising.. they could manage/support ~ 2,500 tasks.
Well calculation time of the tasks.

You took my interest for to post tickets.. so if I could reach the devs with this post, it would be well.

I said all the time with > BOINC V6.6.11 I have 1/2 CUDA performance lost.

An AR-WU 0.4x go up from ~ 8 min. to ~ 30 min. or more . [this are nearly 1/4 performance]
ONLY with changing V6.6.11 to V6.6.14 or .20. [with a cache of ~ 3,700 WUs]

You think if I will close the Manager the time will be again normal?
Normally I don't have the Manager open.. it's an only crunching PC.. only short time after an update I look to the Manager..

But this wouldn't be the prob.. if I use BOINC V6.6.20 and less than ~ 2.500 WUs.. the CUDA tasks [same AR] have the same ~ 8 min.
The 'wall' are this ~ 2,500 WUs in cache.
If I'm over this ~ 2,500 WUs and > BOINC V6.6.11 the CUDA performance go bad.

I don't know why, and don't know how..
But I see it in BOINC Manager..
The calculation time (I repeat me) go from ~ 8 min. to ~ 30 min. or more [same AR-WU!].

I thought if I uninstall V6.6.20 all function will be deleted.
BOINC V6.4.7 didn't showed a nVIDIA driver version, now after uninstall of BOINC V6.6.20 it show my 'funny' driver versions.

If you will delete my ticket.. it was my first time and nobody said me the rules.. nobody will know the BUGs..

BTW - you are a dev?

>BOINC V6.6.11&1/2 CUDA performance
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=52968

I don't wanted to overSPAM the ticket and this thread.

O.K., here my experiences:

> BOINC V6.6.11 can't support WU cache > ~ 2,500 WUs

Why not? What happens if you have that many WUs? Or do you mean BOINC isn't requesting that much work and you think it should?

> BOINC V6.6.11 have problems to manage high cache with > ~ 2,500 WUs [~ 900 MB]!

And because of this BOINC have 1/2 and more CUDA performance lost.

I made this update from BOINC V6.6.11 to V6.6.14 and V6.6.20 when I had a cache of ~ 3,700 WUs.

Then I tested BOINC V6.6.20 with ~ 2,500 WUs and I had 100 % CUDA performance.
Performance like it's normal for =< BOINC v6.6.11 and ~ 3,700 WUs.

~ 3,700 WUs was the 10 day cache for 2 GPUs.
Now I added two more GPUs.. this would mean with better driver and CUDA .dll's ~ 8,000 WUs.
Soon I will test BOINC V6.4.7 and ~ 8,000 WUs..
I don't know if this will be possible.. I will make the test.

after deinstallation of BOINC V6.6.x - BOINC V6.4.x show 'funny' nVIDIA driver versions

Define "funny". Do the driver versions make you laugh?

Isn't this basically reporting a bug on 6.4, which is already old?

BOINC V6.4.x don't post the driver version to the Berkeley-overview-side.
BOINC V6.6.x do this.

But, after deinstallation of BOINC V6.6.x and latest .20 - BOINC V6.4.7 show now 'funny' driver versions.
For example:
driver: 925775673, 1667316016, -1, or others.. and sometimes nothing.. after every update a change..

O.K., if this is already reported.. nobody said it to me in my old threads..

CPU work request, although the CPU should idle

What do you mean with "the CPU should idle", you want it to be idle?

Post a log from the Message tab showing exactly what happens, and explain what you think should be happening.

Only CUDA app_info.xml..

I unchecked CPU usage in the preferences. -> request for new CPU work, and 4 idle CPUs [every minute], [regardless also to GPU work request]....

Then additional..
I insert the <ncpus>0</ncpus> to cc_config.xml. -> request for new CPU work, and 4 idle CPUs [every minute], [regardless also to GPU work request] - and get answer "no work sent - check preferences" [this would mean high Berkeley server load!]

Then additional..
I made my <avg_ncpus>2.00x -trick in app_info.xml. -> request for new CPU work only simultaneously with GPU request [double CPU- as GPU- seconds], but get only CUDA work.. *happy*

[Quad-CPU + 2 GPUs - ONLY BOINC/SETI@home - no other project - ONLY GPU CRUNCHING !]

And.. for a small test..
I reduced the CPUs in the computing preferences.
Simultaneously MB/CPU + CUDA/GPU.
I chose only use 2 CPUs - but 4 MBs/CPU were running.

If this because of the app_info.xml - I could limit the CPUs with <ncpus> in cc_config.xml ?

Thanks to you both! :-)

The 1st one (WU cache) has been addressed in 6.6.24. See this message thread.

Are you sure? ;-)

I didn't found this change in V6.6.24

Message 24503

Under which point/name is this listed?

Now V6.6.28 is the recommended version.
Big WU cache will work also with this version?

Thanks! :-)

Hello,

I could reach the developers with this thread?

Or the developers don't look here around?

Is this 'only' a forum for user to help other user?

How it's possible for me to get in contact with the developers?

If they are here around also, it would be nice if they would get a sign, that they had noticed BUG-related threads.

Thanks a lot.

Best wishes.

PS.
It's not a DEV-V of BOINC - it's a 'final'.. a recommended version.
Although after .20, it came .21, .22 and current V6.6.23.
