21) Message boards : Questions and problems : CPU Temperature vs Performance
Message 92259 Posted 22 Jul 2019 by mmonnin |
Drop the CPU core voltage a bit to reduce frequency. You should be able to reduce wattage a decent amount for little performance loss. |
22) Message boards : Questions and problems : Option for downloading and computing only one task at all
Message 92210 Posted 17 Jul 2019 by mmonnin |
I haven't tried this, but I suppose you could set the resource share for all projects to 0. Additionally, you could set all projects to No New Tasks. Then, whenever you want to run Boinc, you could select the project you want to run and Allow New Tasks. With the resource share at 0 it should only download enough tasks for the processors you have active. When you don't want that project to download any further tasks you can set it back to No New Tasks. If you don't want all CPU cores to crunch tasks, follow Les' advice and reduce the percentage. This works. I do this to have a backup project in case the project I am running runs out of work. With 0 resource share the task count = CPU count. No tasks will be waiting to run. |
23) Message boards : Questions and problems : boinc on debian server does not work
Message 92208 Posted 17 Jul 2019 by mmonnin |
There hasn't been any Linux work at climateprediction for ages. Ages? I am still running some now. They started like 22 days ago but thats the length of the task. |

Recent announcement from Alessio Mereghetti... https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/forum_thread.php?id=5011 GPU computing is not the solution for every compute problem. Otherwise why don't we just get rid of CPUs all together and just use GPUs as the main processor in computers? They are better than each other at different types of calculations. GPUs excel at specific types of calculations. If there are branching in the code then GPUs suffer and the math needs to be highly parallel to make use of small 'cores' on GPUs. |
25) Message boards : Questions and problems : Had to limit # concurrent tasks due to "hi priority" WCG downloads
Message 92125 Posted 10 Jul 2019 by mmonnin |
Use an app_config to set cpu usage on the GPU tasks to 0.1 CPUs so they will still run even if CPU tasks become high priority. This does not change how much CPU the GPU tasks will actually use. You can reduce the # of CPU tasks via BOINC Mgr setting or Process Lasso to allow GPUGrid tasks to get all the CPU cycles it needs. |

I had issues too with Universe. It was up and down for me going by event logs. Using a VPN worked for me. |

Message 91921 Posted 21 Jun 2019 by mmonnin |
Calling someone a climate denialist likens them to holocaust deniers and is an insult and lack of civility. I hate SFS. Either someone used my email address or I used my email on my VPN where someone else did something bad so my email was linked to the bad IP and thus banned. No accountability whatsoever and a PIA to get it fixed. |

There is some issues with University Data Center. Currently unknown how long it will take to restore availability of the server. No worries, no data was lost. Just server of this project and probably some others that are hosted in the same University Data Center. This is basically what I read at another project. Data center was moving then bureaucracy issues. |

I've read the google translate. Another member messaged me saying all the WUProp hours were from the only admin. So it's probably not open for testing yet. |
30) Message boards : GPUs : Request for Intel iGPU support to be a working feature again.
Message 91828 Posted 13 Jun 2019 by mmonnin |
My point, dear child, is that if other applications - from indie games to web browsers to modellers to commercial games - can work just fine being accelerated by my iGPU using the current driver, then it seems like it ought not to be impossible for BOINC to do the same. Except compute and gaming driver requirements are not the same thing and require different parts of drivers. Windows 10 will install NV CUDA only drivers with it's updates but DOES NOT install OpenCL. Across the many BOINC forums I've seen it over and over again where users no longer have a GPU to compute with due to Win10. Sure they can still play their games but compute does not work. You're asking for help then you're the one dismissing everything from admins and people that built the platform you're using. |

Message 91822 Posted 13 Jun 2019 by mmonnin |
Yes, the May update handles chiplets better. If it's a single die zen chip, I'm not sure there's the same level of benefit. https://www.anandtech.com/show/14525/amd-zen-2-microarchitecture-analysis-ryzen-3000-and-epyc-rome/3 |

Message 91821 Posted 13 Jun 2019 by mmonnin |
Yeah, I do actually know a driver is, and one is installed, thanks very much you patronising person. That's why I can run hardware accelerated apps on a monitor plugged into my iGPU :-) If a multitude of games and 3D apps - commercial to homebrew, even web browsers can run and be accelerated by my iGPU using the installed driver, I would think BOINC ought to manage... The mindset of saying that BOINC should manage GPU drivers is along the lines of saying Steam should manage drivers. Steam is the loading interface for many games, BOINC is the interface for many projects. I'm not even sure drivers could be packaged with BOINC for licensing reasons. At most BOINC could check for latest/missing GPU drivers but that is out of scope of the program and not something I'd want BOINC doing as an end user. OSs do that too much already. |

Some hours showed up on WUProp for a new project called QuChemPedIA. About the most I could find out about it is the GitHub link. Does anyone have more info about it? https://github.com/bharismendy/QuChemPedIA |

Also the CPU and any case fans. I see Universe tasks being worked on in the log. Something like MSI AB, GPU-Z or HWMonitor can monitor the temps. |
35) Message boards : Projects : Question regarding resource and project management
Message 91366 Posted 3 May 2019 by mmonnin |
With more than one project being allowed to download work, the resource share ends up being a ratio. If one is at 100 and another is 20 then eventually one project will run 5x as more than the other. It's a long term thing though so once a 2nd project is enabled then BOINC will try to catch up its run time to meet that ratio. If you want to run each project evenly then set them all to the same #. It could be 1, 10, or 1000 if you want. I keep a project or two at 0% as a backup in case the primary project goes down or runs out of work. Then it will only download enough work to keep the processors busy. |
36) Message boards : Questions and problems : Multiple boinc clients are shown in "Startup Task" page

I have pointed several people to your duplicate GPU thread fix here. So you're not the only one to have that issue. |
37) Message boards : Questions and problems : CPU usage claims 100% but CPU temperature doesn't reflect this?
Message 91363 Posted 3 May 2019 by mmonnin |
This is all based off temps? Not every project uses the CPU the same so temps will be different even at the same % util. With lower temps the wattage probably dropped as well. |
38) Message boards : Questions and problems : Limit project downloads using BOINC?
Message 91226 Posted 26 Apr 2019 by mmonnin |
Unless there is a limit in your project preferences like at LHC or a max # of tasks per CPU thread set by the project, all projects will download tasks to fill up your queue based off the task ETA. ETAs may be off until the host completes several. You're best tool is the # of days in your queue. |
39) Message boards : Projects : Any projects needing huge memory?
Message 90925 Posted 4 Apr 2019 by mmonnin |
Any VBox Project will use a lot of memory. Most use over 1GB per task, some up to 10GB. LHC Cosmology RNA World - If you can get work. |
40) Message boards : Questions and problems : PC shutting down when Boinc Manager is on
Message 90924 Posted 4 Apr 2019 by mmonnin |
How are temps? Actually monitor them. Does the Laptop have a sufficient charger to run 100% CPU/GPU and keep the battery at 100%. |
