I've been reading about gridcoin, a cryptocurrency that uses BOINC credits to mine the currency. Im interested in taking part but i dont know if its totally legit or not. I know that seti@home is now accepting gridcoin for donations, but does anybody have any experience with It? Thanks!

Can you report this at BAM as well? I'll forward it to our Android developer.

Sure. As I said, I don't know if it's an issue with BAM or with running a large number of simultaneous projects, but I'll be happy to send them a note anyways.

Ok I have an update. Rather than my usual method of attaching my BAM! account manager, I attached Seti@home by itself...and it works! The GUI is responsive and I have no crashes at all. I went and attached World Community Grid as well and everything still works fine.

Either it's the number of projects that it's hanging up on, it's the account manager, or it's something belonging to one of the individual projects that is causing problems. I'm not sure which one it is, and I'm also not sure why it suddenly started acting up the other day when it had been working fine for many months.

Given how it literally started happening overnight, I'm wondering if one of the executables downloaded from one of the projects gave it issues?

Hmm, I can't see a data/data subfolder. I just have /data which has many app options except edu.berkeley.boinc.

I'm wondering if there is something corrupted in there that is NOT being removed when uninstalling BOINC. But I can't see the folder to verify that.

Edit - more information. It appears BOINC is working fine in the background...it's still chugging away on my phone, it's just the GUI that's crashing, not updating, and not letting me configure BOINC.

Running latest Play Store version of BOINC on LG Optimus G Pro with Android Kit Kat. BOINC was running fine for months but this morning it said that there was nothing to do. I tried restarting the phone but nothing. I noticed no projects were attached so I clicked on "Add Project" and BOINC crashed on me.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but no luck. BOINC no longer works on my phone when it did yesterday. I uninstalled and installed an older version from the BOINC website and it won't work either.

Anybody know where BOINC stores it's data and preference files so I can wipe them clean and do a fresh reinstall?

I've noticed that whenever I change preferences such as the work queue size, even after updating with the project, the change doesn't apply to some of my computers. I have to open BOINC preferences and click "clear" to restore web-based settings.

This happens often...what could be causing BOINC to not update automatically like it should?

You're been into the local preferences, and exited by clicking OK instead of Cancel?

Claggy

Don't think so. It happens on all my computers...several of whom I rarely access BOINC except to check up on things.

I've been a Seti@home user since nearly the beginning of the project, and I jumped on the BOINC bandwagon the instant classic SETI shut down. Since then I've focused on projects that I am personally interested in, or projects that could have a profound impact in the scientific world.

Lately I've been expanding to just about any BOINC project that exists, on the feeling that even if I set the resource share low, at least I'll be helping out even if I'm not terribly interested in it.

Problem is that my list of projects is growing very long, and I am becoming concerned that one of these days I'll attach to an alpha or beta project that is less than benign, and I'll regret it.

I know I can use BoincSynergy and BOINCstats to get a list of projects that exist, but is there any place I can go to find if a project is...well...trustworthy? Or can I trust that if it's on a big site such as BoincSynergy that it is safe to attach to?

Using Nativeboinc, a 3rd party BOINC client for Android, many more projects are available including Seti@home. I'll be using your client, since it is more stable than Nativeboinc, but you might want to check compatibility with Seti@home since it DOES work on my phone - Galaxy Note 2.

Post:
On some of my computers, the BOINC folder has grown excessively large. In some cases, over 35gb in size. I presume this is due to outdated (but not deleted) application executables, as well as old workunits that were never deleted.

Question - how do I purge all this useless data? Is there an easy way to get rid of the excess stuff without having to completely uninstall and reinstall BOINC?

Thx!

Post:

There's a bug in the software that sometimes rears its ugly head when more than 2 projects are attached and allowed to fetch work. As I understand it it's a difficult bug to track, and there's even the thing that when you leave BOINC well alone, eventually, after a week or what, it'll fix itself.

I think this might be related. I did some testing:

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=68453&temp_sort_style=5

If I have a lot of CPU units in my cache from non-SETI projects, then my GPU cache of SETI workunits shrinks to only a day or two's worth. If I disable work fetch on all other projects, my SETI cache grows to enough for nearly a week.

What makes GridRepublic clumsy?
GridRepublic is working on a website overhaul due in the next month or so. I'd say check it out again later.

Too many clicks for simple things such as changing resource share on multiple projects at once, for instance.

Gridrepublic seemed a bit clumsy. Boincstats / !BAM seems more robust, although seeing as how I already manage all three of my computers with Boincview, I'm not sure if I really need an account manager at the moment.

...Next problem, the "boinc.exe" command opens a command line boinc client including all the message text. What would I need to do to have it open the client without everything being visible?

You could try boinc --detach
From boinc --help:
Usage: boinc [options]
    --detach detach from console (Windows)

Gruß,
Gundolf

What does "detach from console" do exactly?

Post:
There is no way to start the client or the manager via boinccmd. Boinccmd is strictly for interacting with a running BOINC client which includes stopping the client but not starting the client or the manager.

If your script is starting the manager then it's probably because it issues the command to start the manager rather than the command to start the client.

rem *** client restart script ***
rem
cd "c:\program files\boinc"
boinccmd.exe --quit
boinc.exe

Ok we're getting there, I have a bat file that successfully kills the client and restarts it without opening up a second copy of the boinc manager. Thanks! Next problem, the "boinc.exe" command opens a command line boinc client including all the message text. What would I need to do to have it open the client without everything being visible?

EDIT - Ok I got it. Here's my bat file:

cd "C:\Program Files\BOINC\
boinccmd.exe --quit
ping 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 500 > null
taskkill /f /im boincmgr.exe
ping 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 500 > null
start boincmgr.exe /s

This stops the BOINC client, kills the BOINC Manager, then restarts the manager to the system tray. The "ping" commands are to pause the batch file for half a second between commands, so that each command has time to complete before the next one executes. Thanks!

Yes, I meant manager. My two CUDA computers have an annoying issue where sometimes a Seti CUDA task will freeze and not make any progress whatsoever. Running benchmarks usually un-freezes the task but not always. Sometimes I have to exit and restart BOINC to get it going again. I know I can set a script on a timer that starts BOINC using boinccmd, but every time I do it opens another copy of the manager.
