1) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC wins! (Message 25828)

i give up

They have really done everything that BOINC is a pain for me!

  • Not installable on DomainController -> workaround: old version.
  • Not usable on DomainClients -> workaround: unsecure Host so BOINCsecurity works.
  • Cache not per project -> workaround: a lot of timeconsuming babysitting
  • not possible to dedicate project to core/cpu/gpu -> workaround: a lot of timeconsuming babysitting and messed up systems
  • scheduling is a bad joke -> babysitting, babysitting and babysitting

I managed to have a RAC of 130,000 when 180,000 were possible without BOINCs control and 80,000 or less were realistic without my control.

I pay about 200€/Month only for the BOINC part (CPU/GPU at 100%) not including the base costs to run all systems 24/7.
What i get back is the statement that there will be no hope for a better situation as they keep their goal to control everything and let the user as less as possible control over their own systems.

But the reason is not RAC, time or money - it's the feeling to get kicked for my efforts!

I've set all my hosts to not receive new work and in 1 to 20days when the 10day caches are empty, i'll uninstall all BOINC.

Sadly i take 3 users with me as i babysitted their systems what they don't want to do for their own and i suspect that another 2 will follow in a few days when they run into first trouble with BOINc on their own.

Perhaps i'll come back when BOINC gives control over my systems back to me - where it belongs!

Goodbye
Holger

2) Message boards : Questions and problems : 2 separate BOINC installations? (Message 24823)

Milkyway is not cuda. If Seti could do ati, i would run only seti. I have hosts running only seti on cpu and gpu and there's nothing straight forward, it's the same bad game only other players and actually working workarounds as it is with other hosts running only seti cpu.

so your solution sadly isn't far simpler, it's simply impossible for what i want.
I want to run seti as much as possible and other projects(Milkyway) where seti isn't possible(ATI) and BOINC does everything to make it hard for me, regardless if cuda, ati or only cpu.
From 9 hosts there is only 1 old notebook that actually doesn't need any tweaks to run BOINC and there are only 4 hosts with usable gpus.

I'm running Milkyway@Home on my GPU and Seti@Home on the CPU. As i have no control over the scheduling between the two projects i know of, most of the time it doesn't work because BOINC gives priority to either Milkyway or Seti but never to both projects as it should be as they can easily run both.

Now my idea is to have two separate installations, so one can run seti and the other Milkyway and BOINC has no way to mess up my resources.

I think the problem will be the registry where the used folders are set, so the second installation will most likely overwrite the folders of the first installation.

Is there a version that doesn't use the registry?

I'm using Vista 64.

BTW are there any plans to make BOINC usable again? My impression is that it gets worse with every new version. When a new version comes out the workarounds that didn't work well with the previous version don't work at all with a new version. The problems from the old version aren't solved but new problems were introduced, so i need new workarounds for the old and the new problems.
The last days i had to babysit nearly every new WU. I have to trick out every system i set up to run BOINC because of every reason one can think of and because of some reason you even can't.

Isn't it possible to make a simple version that i can set up for every core separately without any user account messing that simply allows control over the science apps.

I'm really annoyed and understand very well everybody who leaves BOINC - i'm thinking of leaving more and more and i really like the idea of BOINC.

I need it to monitor my PCs at work from home and vice versa. As i use a nat network i only can route every port to only one PC. 31416 to the first PC, 31417 to the second and so on...

if i could use the standard port i would start boinc using boinc manager.

I'm actually learning Python and i'll try to do a proxy for boinc which would let me use all the standard settings.

i tried all the options in boincmgr already but i couldn't get it to work - /b doesn't work at all

i can't start boinc using arguments when started by BOINC Manager
i can't start BOINC Manager when i started the core client with the appropriate arguments
i can't use service mode, as it doesn't work with the Milkyway optimized ATI app

all i want to do is run BOINC using another port and to allow remote control without service mode where i could get it to work easily

@Leopoldo Thnx that's what i was looking for

@Ageless i use optimized apps and the readme says it wouldn't work as service. My first tests didn't work so i run it not as service. But if you run optimized apps too, i'll give the service another try as it is my preferred way to run boinc on all none-ati-rigs

My System is Vista 64

Now i have the problem that BOINC Manager hangs on startup. Does boincmgr.exe have some command-line argument that prevents it from starting boinc.exe as it seems this is the point where it hangs

But this way i still have the cmd-window.

how does the BOINC Manager start boinc.exe that it doesn't have a window?

Is there a way to start boinc.exe without BOINC Manager.

I want this because i try to start boinc with command line arguments (-allow_remote_gui_rpc -gui_rpc_port #)

I can't start it as service, where i can set the arguments, as i run MilkyWay on a ATI card which won't run when installed as service.

when enter the right information in the registry boinc will start as expected but always with a command window.

I use windows vista 64 and BOINC 6.6.17, but i don't think this makes any difference for this problem.
