1) Message boards : BOINC Manager : BOINC as cooperative partner? (Message 5615)

Post:
I installed BOINC on a computer that I don't intend to use very often. Maybe 5 times a day for 10 minutes each. I wanted to set it up so that when I was using the computer, BOINC paused and let me do my work. Then, when I was finished, BOINC would pick up where it left off.

I set my preferences for BOINC not to run while the computer was busy, with an idle time of 5 minutes. I figured I was set.

However, when the BOINC screen saver comes on, it reports that BOINC is currently suspended. It goes on to suggest in strong language that I set BOINC to run all the time. It is only when I click "Run always" that it resumes.

What gives? Why should I have to restart BOINC when I'm done using the computer? I don't WANT to "Run always," damn it. What's the problem?

Please, I'd really like to know either how to run BOINC only when the computer is idle, or whether this is a bug. Thanks.

everything working fine now - solved it

Hi,

I have set my settings in my project account so that Boinc should only run if the computer has been idle for 4 min. I run an updated in Boinc Manager so that these settings are updated.

Still, Boinc uses more than 90% of the CPU when I am using my laptop. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Simone

Tell us. What was the problem, and what did you do?

4) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Temporarily failed download system I/O (Message 1594)

I don't know what the problem was and is but now Boinc Manager connects to the servers.
I tried to connect about every 5 minutes and it wont work and suddenly it worked.

For about the last 18 hours the Seti servers have been severely overloaded and getting connected has been very difficult. There are still problems so you must have got lucky at one point. Unfortunately Seti has a history of this type of difficulty which is now reappearing because of the influx of the classic people.

The Seti admins have warned that they may not be able to cope with demand if everybody tries to join Seti only. It would be very prudent to have other BOINC projects on the go so that the alternative project will take up the slack if Seti is down. I would thoroughly recommend EAH for this purpose as it is a very reliable project and very worthwhile from the science perspective.

Why don't you check it out, since this is exactly what BOINC was designed to do.

To add support to Gary's suggestion: I had similar "Temporarily failed download" problems with S@H as my only project, until I attached the Einstein@home project. Ever since, E@H has been chugging away, while S@H is still trying to right itself.
5) Message boards : BOINC Manager : BOINC keeps trying and failing to download work units (Message 1593)

Installation of BOINC 5.2.13 went fine, as far as I could tell. I configured with the account key given to me for transferring my seti@home classic account.

Since then, I've attached only the seti@home project and rebooted. It's been a few hours, but BOINC has so far failed to download any work units.

Below is a display since the last reboot, about 1/2 hour ago. The "MD5 check failed..." and the next 3 messages are red.

I am running Win2K w/ latest SP on a small home LAN with a hardware router. I am also running Norton Antivirus, but no software firewall.

Thanks for any help,

Ken

Thank y'all. Subsequent efforts on my part adds corroboration to the "Seti@home is down" explanation.

In the midst of the failing downloads, I attached another project (Einstein@home). Sure enough, E@H broke out of its shell, found its legs, stood up, and has been ambling along ever since. Seti@home is still reporting "Temporarily failed download."

I'm presuming that I don't have to do anything re S@H other than wait. For example, Michael R's suggestion of a corrupted datafile doesn't require any action on my part, does it?

Thanks again, folks,

Ken
