I've a whole load of projects attached, and troubleshooting is resulting in an uncomfortable number of freezes if I can't act fast enough stop the RAM usage from spiking to 100%.

I wonder if anyone else has encountered this? Any idea what is to blame?

Fantastic news, thank you :-)

I apologise for the paucity of useful information since requested the day before. I've been pretty much exclusively on iOS and ChromeOS devices the past couple days. Though most all that I knew I already related, barring the predictable BOINC log entries stating variations on a theme of "missing intel_gpu GPU".
Luckily that didn't slow you down! :-)

Cheers!

I assume you're somewhere on https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28816/Intel-Graphics-Windows-10-DCH-Drivers?product=80939, but that page includes 9 different versions.

I tried the Windows 10 64bit exe installer. It refuses to install, insisting I rely on the manufacture's version. Which in my case is the Windows Update installed version. Prior to DCH versions, I had the Intel downloaded version and BOINC saw the iGPU.

My feeling is, if it's considered worth dev time and effort to support the Intel iGPU, it's probably not going to still be worthwhile if users are left only with the option of forcing a manual install of the Intel downloaded drivers. Because that will surely slash user adoption too next to nothing.

My point, dear child, is that if other applications - from indie games to web browsers to modellers to commercial games - can work just fine being accelerated by my iGPU using the current driver, then it seems like it ought not to be impossible for BOINC to do the same.

Now if that is in the too hard basket to get working again, fine. iGPU workunit crunching is surely a niche in BOINC. Priorities, right? But kindly do end your patronising BS that I'm suggesting or not knowing things that I never suggested and know very well indeed, thank you.

I can personally attest to crunching more SETI@home work units when I ran my i5 8400 with CPU and iGPU utilised, both without and with discrete graphics. At least when that worked for me.

Sure, it wasn't a staggering increase in results, but I say if the user is willing, why not let them? I make sure have a good cooling solution since I run BOINC always after 5-15mins idle on all my computers. And I accept the consequences of all that work, the shortening of my hardware's lifespan, and electricity cost.

Naturally, I realise development effort must be balanced against the wants of a user such as myself :-)

I'd like to add that I've tried uninstalling the iGPU driver and letting it reinstall on reboot, as well as running my secondary monitor with the iGPU instead of my main AMD Radeon graphics card. As well as reinstalls of BOINC and setting <use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus> in cc_config.xml

Nothing I've tried since the shift to Windows DCH drivers will allow BOINC to see the iGPU.

Yeah, I do actually know a driver is, and one is installed, thanks very much you patronising person. That's why I can run hardware accelerated apps on a monitor plugged into my iGPU :-) If a multitude of games and 3D apps - commercial to homebrew, even web browsers can run and be accelerated by my iGPU using the installed driver, I would think BOINC ought to manage...

Those Intel supplied drivers no longer install in Windows 10. I could manually do so, but wouldn't it be better and safer for BOINC to support this new reality, rather than require manual graphics driver installation?

Oh, and the updated iGPU drivers install automatically via Windows Update. So there's that, too.

Hey, it's been months now since BOINC could ever see the iGPU in my i5 8400, and talking with other users I'm far from alone here. It's just a shame to waste the iGPU's unit crunching power. It sits there idle, month after month, while my CPU and Radeon do all the work...

I'm not really a fan of downgrading such a key driver. But if that is really my only option...

I also tried reinstalling the driver. BOINC still believes my i5 8400's iGPU doesn't exist.

Yes, I tried two reboots. Windows Update and Intel's own installer report no issues with my Intel iGPU driver.

After installing https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27484/Graphics-Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-15-65-?product=128199 BOINC no longer sees my iGPU. Aside from a driver downgrade, can anything be done?

Admins are not all knowing? :-\ Wait, if you're not all knowing maybe just don't know you're all knowing... in which case you'd be all knowing! But actually not, because you didn't know you were...

*head begins to hurt*

But anyway, the upshot of this thread is: login via email password adds a project using the strong key, and is thus unaffected by later project password changes.

Hopefully that is the case and I've correctly understood, because this week I'll be testing it as I upgrade passwords (from my weak choice of a decade ago) for over a dozen projects spread across a dozen or so computers that were all logged in via email/password, most of whom I won't get in front of for months :-)

See ya starside!

If you attach a computer using the email/password combination via the Manager you will get the (strong) authenticator in the account file. So you can change your password without loosing the computer.

If you want to use the weak authenticator you can't do this via the Manager you would need to supply this via a file. The weak authenticator is identified by being prepended with your userid and is stored in the same place as the authenticator in the account file.

Okay, I genuinely don't mean to give offence here, so I hope this won't be taken as any kind of slight. Because I really like BOINC, and appreciate the help from it's community over years.

But who is correct here? Because I'm had a reply from an admin and yourself - a dev - that contradict each other. So far as I understand. I could just be confused. That's been know to happen :-)

I super appreciate everybody's help, and apologise if I'm being dense in any way :-)

So adding a project via email/password adds using the weak key, and will be logged out upon password change.

While I'm clear upon how to add projects with the strong account key that will not be logged out upon password change, to a computer via command line. I'm not clear on how to do so via the BOINCmanager GUI app. Do I simply substitute the strong key for password?

Thanks again, and as to the ethics involved, I ask those family and friends for whom I act as tech support, for permission first before setting up BOINC on their computers. For those who say they're happy to donate downtime, I just install, add some favourite projects, and check in upon my return (usually to look after some unrelated tech support matter). Anyone who expresses their own interest, I help them set up their own accounts with projects, and show they how to use BOINCmanager.

I enjoy spreading BOINC around, but I agree it is only right to do so ethically with permission :-) I'm aware some people go a little nuts installing BOINC on every computer they ever find they've access to. I guess there are worse things they could be doing, but it's not okay in my book.

https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Weak_account_key - "Your weak account key is a function of your password. If you change your password, your weak account key changes, and the previous weak account key becomes invalid."

So I take that and what you've said, to mean any clients I have logged in with email/password, will be logged out and unable to continue work, if I change my password. But if I logged in a client with the regular account key, changing my password won't affect the login?

Am I correctly understanding the process?

Cheers for your help in this matter :-)

G'day.

What happens if I change my password for a BOINC project, and I've other remote computers logged in with my email/password? Do they then get logged out and unable to do any more work? Or did they receive the account key via the email/password login, and will they stay logged in with that? Or is even that a wrong assumption on my part as to how account keys work?

I'd appreciate guidance before moving forward, as some of these computers are only visited by me a couple times a year, and I've no remote access to them.

TIA :-)

Cheers Ageless for that analysis :-) I shall post about the respective issues to their respective forums, as per your advice.

I'd also add looking at my WCG results I see no errors either, however I couldn't see an easy way to post a link that would work outside my login, but here's a screenshot: I mention this as some of the WCG projects like the current The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 required a bunch of RAM, in this application's case - 1,024 MB. SETI@home by comparison only needs around 64MB of RAM. So if I had some kind of subtle RAM issue, it feels like it ought to have shown up in other ways, like the beefier WCD apps, and of course all the other stuff I have this aging 2007 era iMac doing.

With it's paltry 4GB RAM it uses lots of VM and there is considerable read/write to the and from the VM pagefile. My RAM and VM system get quite the workout 24/7, and till adding/re-adding these extra BOINC projects, I saw no obvious issues, big or small.

I'm not saying to those who have suggested RAM issues that it can't be them. It just doesn't feel like a RAM issue, if you know what I mean :-) RAM issues in the past were sometimes subtle, but always noticeable in a more widespread manner. I'd see a variety of app's and system processes giving errors, crashing and experiencing unstable behaviour, kernel panics, freezes, unusual RAM activity, etc. It has been a long time since I owned a computer that had enough RAM and simple/efficiently written enough apps, that a bad RAM issue only noticeable at a certain usage point wouldn't happen constantly.

That said, I'll try to spend overnight running a memtest as soon as I can spare this machine (it does more than crunch BOINC project data, though I often enjoy seeing the BOINC results more than the serious work I do on it myself, heh). If you guys have any other suggestions troubleshooting-wise, I'm open to some more investigative work!

TIA :-)
