1) Message boards : Questions and problems : Performance drop after Win 10 April Update? (Message 104043)

Thanks to all contributors, I consider the problem to be solved. It was, for the most part, in front of the screen ...

Somehow the energy setting for standby mode got reset from "never" to "30 minutes", so the computer went to sleep during the night (and now and then, during the day). I use a docking station and an external screen (which also has a sleep mode) and totally failed to realize that I was not only waking up the screen, but the computer (there is hardly any fan noise and wakeup is really fast). RAC is on the rise again.

I may have an idea what's behind the problem. Possibly it has to do with energy settings and standby mode. It will take a day to see whether changing the settings will have an effect. Would be strange, though.

The work units have different sizes, so number of tasks completed varies (and I don't know where to find this number anyway). On the project site I can see that the number of GNodes computed has gone down from between 50 to 60.000 to around 34.000, so it must be 'less work completed'. Also, I've checked that all work units returned were successful and claimed credit was also granted. That's for two computers, as detailed below.

Laptop 1 (old): Intel i7 2720QM (running 24/7, same OS as new laptop, different security software); RAC previously around 6340, now 6240
Laptop 2 (new): AMD Ryzen 7 4700U (running 24/7, partly used for office work); RAC previously 9000, then 8400 rising to 8600, now 6400 and falling

Something happened on April 1, which caused a small decrease in average credit (a few 100s) on both machines (the new one seemed to recover, although not completely; the old one settled lower). The big drop on April 14 affected only the new laptop, and I cannot remember having installed or changed anything that could explain it (except for the Win 10 update). I've run a benchmark outside BOINC for which I have data to compare and found no difference in raw performance. It's weird.

I'm running BOINC with yoyo@home and distributed.net OGR-28 project on an AMD Ryzen 7 4700U. Following the Windows 10 Update on April 14 (KB5001330), average credit fell from 9000 to 6400 (and still drops). Unfortunately, I can no longer uninstall it.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

Thanks and best regards
Wolfgang
5) Message boards : Questions and problems : Not connecting to project (Message 81033)

I was able to resolve the problem. I did a complete reinstall of BOINC (32 and 64 bit versions) and toggled firewall and antivirus software. It seems that the latest release of Bitdefender AntiVirus Free Edition (1.0.9.21) blocks BOINC communication at least to yoyo@home (even though it's not supposed to interfere with communication and does not report anything). Disabling Bitdefender solved the problem, BOINC is running fine now. I'm using Windows Defender for now.

Possibly similar/related problem here. Since two days, i can no longer access the project (yoyo@home). The client has been running ok for months. Admittedly, I did change a few things in my home network, but internet access and everything else is fine. Here are the startup messages (note empty server reply). The project seems to run fine for others, however (server status ok, WUs are being processed). I've also tried adding another project (SETI), again no communication.

OS: Win 7
BOINC: 7.8.2 (x64)

Thanks for any ideas,
Wolfgang

7) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC Manager: statistics for all projects missing (Message 70940)
Posted 19 Jul 2016 by wolfbert
Post:
Hi,

I've noticed a strange behaviour in BOINC Manager (7.6.22 x64 German on Win 7, BOINC not running as service). I'm running yoyo/OGR and SETI (on GPU) and things are working fine otherwise, but the statistics graphs for "all projects" are not displayed. Recently I reinstalled the software (while keeping the BOINC directory) and stats were displayed properly again, until first shutdown. Afterwards, they were gone again. Stats graphs for single projects are ok.

Thanks for any help, Wolfgang

8) Message boards : Questions and problems : [Discussion] 4th Generation BOINC credit system (Message 69549)
Posted 10 May 2016 by wolfbert
Post:
Hi, just stumbled over this discussion... I'm just an average BOINC volunteer, and do not have a deep understanding of the inner workings of BOINC. That said, let me share my two cents...

The original idea of distributed computing was that volunteers donate (unused) computing resources to an endeavor (project) they find worthwhile. Therefore, the most meaningful measure of progress, contribution and success comes from this endeavor - number of climate model iterations computed, prime numbers found, proteins folded, encryption keys tried, core hours - you name it.

This is fairly easy to determine by the project, it's meaningful for participants, and it can be put in stats tables. Competitions are also still possible (and the organizers can make their own rules how to compare projects). Cheating is rather pointless, as project validation will accept only valid/confirmed work units.

Yes, that means saying good-bye to the idea of combined stats which, as has been pointed out in this discussion, is unrealistic anyway, as it's next to impossible to make projects comparable. So what? When riding a dead horse, it's best to dismount. For statistical purposes, data about OS/CPU/FLOPS etc. can still be collected.

As for *coin: basing this scheme on the BOINC credit system creates a dependency that may or may not hold - sorry, your risk.

Cheers, Wolfgang
