1) Message boards : Questions and problems : Merge BOINC accounts?
Message 22151 Posted 29 Dec 2008 by OffBeatMammal |
thanks all. I'm pretty sure the accounts with the old email address as key are no longer that active (don't think there are any machines not connected via BAM) would have liked to consolidate the credits, but I guess that's not really a high priority thing for the infrastructure ;( Will try some manual tidying up |
2) Message boards : Questions and problems : Merge BOINC accounts?
Message 22118 Posted 28 Dec 2008 by OffBeatMammal |
Somehow it appears that I've got two BOINC accounts, with the same name but different IDs. One appears to be from when I joined BOINC (before SETI crossed over) and the other when SETI made the move. Is it possible to merge the two (ideally combining the stats, keeping the oldest date as the start date etc) so I don't end up with this situation Thanks! |

Any plan to update the "news" page then (to stop Vista users getting excited!)? |
4) Message boards : Questions and problems : Auto-update client on new (stable) release
Message 19269 Posted 7 Aug 2008 by OffBeatMammal |
I've got a couple of machines that I've got BOINC running pretty much set-n-forget with (BAM BoincStats to see what they are doing when I remember but that's it) ... I'd love to have the client auto-update to the latest and greatest when it's released so I don't have to know (or care) what's going on. Sure, it's lazy and marks me out as not really being a geek but I just want to donate some cycles and not really have to care about it ;) Oh, and yes, it's the Windows client I want updating. Not sure if it makes it harder but I run as service on all the machines. One is a Windows Home Server and the others are my wife and daughters desktop machines so I just want it running (getting out of the way when they want to use their machine) with no intervention... |

anyone got any ideas? I've uninstalled the client on the machine with problems but would like to put it back into use... |

Well, the other person reports that it's working with 5.10.7. I find it strange because there's nothing that really changed between .6 and .7 that would have an effect on those preferences. But if you want to try it, the alpha builds are at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php no luck with 5.10.7 :( still ignores user activity even setting the advanced preferences. |

@sekerob - happy to give ThreadMaster a go once we get it kinda running stable ;) The config is set to run according to preferences @MikeMarsUK - sorry, my misunderstanding. I assumed that 80% would cap the CPU use at 80% at any given instant not averaged over (say) 5 seconds. I guess it makes sense @KSMarksPsych - while I'm glad it's not just me, I hope it's an easy fix ;) I'm currently running the 5.8.16 from the homepage... should I try 5.10.x (where should I go looking for that? and will the client ever get an auto-update function?!) |
8) Message boards : BOINC client : Client not observing the idle and max CPU requests
Message 11016 Posted 18 Jun 2007 by OffBeatMammal |
I've just installed the BOINC client on a new machine (Vista) and noticed that it's not obeying either the max CPU load or the idle time parameters I've going set in my BAM (BoincStats.com account manager) profile. I tried editing the local XML prefs file to set max CPU load to 80% and idle time to 1 minutes (just to see if that helps) and it works when the service first starts but once the idle time has expired then the user activity doesn't pause the service again. The 80% CPU load means that unlike when there is no limit (when it just sits at max load) the CPU cycles from nothing to about 90% I tried using the "simple" view to set the parameters locally for the machine (assuming I'd got something wrong with my XML edits) but get the same problem. The app is installed as a service (via the system account) and we usually log onto the machine as a different (standard, not admin) user. Any thoughts would be most welcome as I've had to disable the service as the machine is too unresponsive with BOINC running |
9) Message boards : BOINC Manager : BOINC slowdown on Mac OSX
Message 2690 Posted 21 Jan 2006 by OffBeatMammal |
this it may be a PowerBook thing... it happens regularly on my Rev.A 12" PB (yes, I know I need a new one!) where the kernel_task goes wild, but on the G5 edit machine it never happens. I don't try and figure it out, just restart every Monday morning whatever! |
10) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Bug with AMD 64x2 and Cool'n'Quiet
Message 2689 Posted 21 Jan 2006 by OffBeatMammal |
I have a couple of Athlon64 machines with Cool'n'Quiet running BOINC but I don't use the screensaver. I've not seen an issue when it's just running as a service. Wonder if the issue is that BOINC runs at the lowest priority... C'n'Q might not be noticing it kick in because the priority is set so low (just a guess) |

Message 2431 Posted 7 Jan 2006 by OffBeatMammal |
sounds nice and simple. don't forget to set up the gui_rpc_auth.cfg and remote_hosts.cfg files as detailed on the setup Wiki so you can access / control the remote machines once they're running |
12) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Message says "Not enough disk space", prefs say otherwise
Message 2340 Posted 30 Dec 2005 by OffBeatMammal |
The suggestion that the preferences would be better on the client is one that is in the list of things to do. But, I will say that there is some merit in the web based preferences. BUt, over time, new features like this are added to make the system better. I was trying to work out what the heck this was (as a big advocate of client side preferences) today... and it suddenly clicked... if you've machines in a dozen locations and can't access them all from one manager (either the default or something like BoincView then it lets you update the one web preferences and as if by magic all clients will be brought back into sync. One small question... if I'm siged up with 5 projects how to they sync my 'general' preferences... or do I have to update them all? (not quite sure how they tie projects back to each other) and it would be very cool if they all updated back to here (to keep our stats in order as well ;) ) |

Hi Dirk, You can check the temperature (as Paul suggests) of various probes using something like SpeedFan if you don't already have a motherboard / BIOS monitor app You can check your network throughput and see what's going on (if you've WiFi could be a nasty neighbour stealing bandwidth, or if cable you may be getting all the local kids getting home from school and clogging the pipe with Britney downloads) with something like PRTG Traffic Monitor As Jim suggested Virus / Malware could be an issue. I'm hoping you have an active, up-to-date anti-virus but if not I recommend with NOD32 or the new (beta) MS OneCare as they both have very low demands on the system (Norton or McAfee for instance place much higher demands in terms of both memory and CPU usage on the system). Other anti-virus or malware suggestions here I was actually about to post a suggestion here to have BOINC able to pause is CPU temperature exceeds a certain figure... topical obviously ;) |
14) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Connection Problems
Message 2309 Posted 29 Dec 2005 by OffBeatMammal |
just wanted to report that my connection problems (primarily boincmgr.exe not communicating with boinc.exe) have cleared up completely ever since I removed the Google Web Accelerator that I had been running. For various other reasons I have 127.0.0.1 marked as "don't accelerate" in the Google WA settings .... |

Message 2291 Posted 28 Dec 2005 by OffBeatMammal |
The BOINC Client cannot do what the Science Application does not allow it to do. So, the responsibility is back on the projects to ensure "safe" computing. Most do a pretty good job, but, some checkpoints are so large that they are not practical to do very often, like CPDN's, I forget what their interval is ... (15 min?), but, this is one of the reasons I run 24/7 :) I guess 15 mins is okay, as the loss is 7 mins on average.... but it's frustrating that there may be science projects that don't appreciate the wasted work! I imagine there is a balance in terms of efficiency between checkpointing too often and not often enough... the latter wastes time and effort while the former probably affects throughput on a stable machine.... maybe a 'smart' checkpoint system that adapts to how a machine is being used... |

[qote]Volcano 7, I have it running on med which shows 4550rpm on Intel active monitor. Box is about 1 foot from me and I can barely hear it, and I fall asleep in my chair all the time and I think the fan sounds lull me to sleep ;o)[/quote] sweet! I'll have to have a play. Think the GPU is actually noisier at the moment! |
17) Message boards : BOINC Manager : File.SelectComputer - Connection Failure
Message 2289 Posted 28 Dec 2005 by OffBeatMammal |
@OffbeatMammal (hyperactive mongoose? oookaaayy... that's a mammal... and pretty offbeat...) :) having just posted answers to a couple of threads identical to this one... I understand the frustration! My only real complaint with what you're saying is the "snippiness" on the "oh yes, open source, ho-hum, standard response number 12" stuff. I am _not_ a big "open source" advocate. I think MANY of the PROBLEMS with BOINC and SETI can be traced back to the fact that they ARE open source. Sure, some of the biggest improvements have been gained that way - but I'm not sure it's a good tradeoff. (The other problems come down to bad management, frankly.) So when I'm trying to give an _accurate_ response to the (justified) complaints, but feeling like I'm being brushed off as "just another open-source nut", it rankles. I'm with you 101% on Open Source.... while Firefox is a great example of how it can go right it's hampered by the many heads setting direction and personal agenda and often missing great new things because of it. I used to be a tester for a couple of ports for large OS projects and bailed simply because of the antagonism when I dared to suggest perhaps it would be sensible to take advantage of various platform strengths (with workarounds for other platforms) rather than go for the lowest common denominator - left me a touch bitter! Oh, on the Paul Allen thing - "Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has donated $13.5m to the SETI institute to fund construction of a scalable, multi-use radio telescope array." The "SETI Institute" is not "SETI@Home"; as far as I know, it's not even related. None of the webpages referenced, or people named, are anything or anyone I've ever heard of. SETI/BOINC's biggest (cash) donation in the last year was something like $5000. Darn, there was me hoping :( Maybe we need a Boinc client to predict horse-racing odds.... |
18) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Manage more than one client from one GUI
Message 2288 Posted 28 Dec 2005 by OffBeatMammal |
per Bills comments you can include the machine name or IP address in the remote_hosts.cfg file (I've got one machine that just won't share it's machine name) only other gotcha to watch for (stoped my Macs working but not my Windows boxes) is that you need to allow port 1043 (for the GUI remote control) through. If you've got a bunch of machines and want to watch all of them (and have a Windows machine) at the same time have a look at BoincView as another alternative |
19) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Cannot connect to localhost since updating windows
Message 2271 Posted 27 Dec 2005 by OffBeatMammal |
Argh... would suggest trying to connect to 127.0.0.1 rather than localhost (may be a network confusion), also check the password that your connection is using (stored in c:\\program files\\boinc\\gui_rpc_auth.cfg - usually a long random string but you can change it to something you can remember, just make sure you hit return at the end of the line before saving it, and only edit it in Notepad or another frill-free text editor) Also check that the boinc.exe is running - ctrl-alt-del and look at the task manager processes list for boinc.exe If all else fails... delete and re-install. Usually cures Windows problems (bit drastic but can be fun!) |
20) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Boinc Manager loads twice on Windows start
Message 2270 Posted 27 Dec 2005 by OffBeatMammal |
I just checked Task Manager this time after booting up & I found that I have one "boinc.exe" entry two "boincmgr.exe" entries and the empty one that stays minimized is the second one to load ie. the PID for the one that disappears normally is 672 & the other one is 2716 or something do you have the Boincmgr.exe referenced both in the HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run (or HKCU hive) registry key and the programs / startup group ? That'll give you two versions running. If you run MSCONFIG (hit the start button, click on 'run' and type in MSCONFIG and hit ok) you can have a quick look at the startup tab and see what's getting kicked off... |
