Hi,

I am stumped. I have had success installing and running Boinc on several older computers. I've even had it installed on this one too in the recent past. Then, I upgraded this computer to Astronomy Linux running Ubuntu 21.10 OS. Now, no joy. I am cross posting this to both to Einsten@home and the Boinc websites.

This is an HP computer.

I have installed and re-installed Boinc and after apparently fixing one issue now I get the following error message:

Invalid client RPC password Try reinstalling Boinc.

HP Pavilion Notebook
5.9 GiB RAM
AMD A6-6310 APU
Radeon r4 graphics (AMD Kabini)
Ubuntu 21.10
64 bit
Wayland

So far I haven't located a resolution that works for this. Any pointers or help on how to resolve this issue will be most greatly appreciated.

Regards,

John

Hi,

I need to add the following to my original post.

After adding some additional software to my Ubuntu 21.04 from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Cuda website I was able to install Boinc client and manager. I also am able to run the Boinc manager and add my Einstein@Home account to the manager. I am able to start by downloading packets and Boinc happily goes about processing them. However, when I start the sphere screen saver it doesn't function properly, When I click on Show Graphics the sphere appears BUT it doesn't rotate continuously as it should. The screen saver will remain static for a few seconds then jump ahead in time and remain static for a few seconds and jumps ahead in time and it repeats. Also, none of the set of command line functionality using the keyboard work.

So, I'm assuming that something I installed for the website I identified above either changed the OS or I need to add some additional software so that the screensaver works correctly.

I will cross post this thread to the Einstein@home website.

Regards,
John

Hi group,
I am having a major problem installing and running BOINC. I recently upgraded my Linux OS to Ubuntu 21.04. At that time BOINC failed to launch, I then had no luck at fully installing BOINC without receiving an error message. I installed via command line. It returned a partial error message during installation and finished.
The icon shows up in the Menu but fails to launch. It reports the following error message: Failed to Change to directory var/lib/boinc-client (Permission denied)

I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times to no avail. I am stumped because BOINC was working fine on this computer Hp laptop running Linux Ubuntu 20.04. I am not sure if it did install as a service.

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 21.04 from Ubuntu 20.10. I already had programs installed that I kept with the upgrade. Subsequently, I then installed BOINC Manager and the associated client software. I used the command line: sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client start to start the client for BOINC. I then connected to my Einstein@Home account using BOINC Manager. The packages loaded as usual. I started the screen saver (rotating astronomy sphere). Then within a couple of minutes my entire computer system freezes.

I have tested my various other installed programs for astronomy and they all work just fine and do not freeze my system.

My system is as follows

Intel® Core™ i7-4500U CPU @ 1.80GHz × 4
7.7 GiB Memory
Intel® HD Graphics 4400 (HSW GT2)
1.0 TB HD

Ubuntu 21.04
64-bit
GNOME Version 3.38.5
Windowing System Wayland

To check the version of BOINC Manager I had to start the the program which froze my system before I could add the following:
BOINC Manager
Version 7.16.6 (x64)
wxWidgets 3.0.5

Okay Gals and Guys...
I upgraded Ubuntu 20.10 and BOINC Manager to 7.16.16 and now when I push the "Show Graphics" button nothing happens, that is no screensaver star sphere opens..

Now, having updated BOINC Manager to the latest version for Ubuntu 20.10 to 7.16.16, pushing the “Show Graphics” button on any of the 4 running tasks, nothing happens. That is, no starsphere. So, what am I now missing?

Specs

A Dell Inspiron 5737 notebook computer
Ubuntu 20.10 64bit
wxWidgets version 3.0.5
Computing Preferences are local

Running with a Genuine Intel Core i7 4500 U CPU @ 1.8 GHz 4 cores
Intel HD graphics 4400 (HSW GT2)
8 GB RAM
1.0 TB HDD

GNOME Version 3.38.3

Windows Version X11

Display 1600 x 900 (16:9) Highest available
Refresh Rate 60.1 Hz

I've purged and reinstalled several times but still no luck.

Any help will be most appreciated.

Hi All,

Well here I am once again with another problem or issue with getting Boinc Manager along with Einstein@Home to work. I've had my Bonic Manager working great until I upgraded my Linux Ubuntu 20.04lts to Ubuntu 20.10 yesterday Now, I get the following message:

gui_rpc_auth.cfg exists but can't be read. Check the file permissions

I've purged and reinstalled several times now and no change. So how do I fix this?

John

Hi all,

I have an update for Windows users (me too).

I unchecked those same boxes in Computing Preferences in the BOINC Manager on my Windows 10 Home edition and guess what? The Einstein@Home screensaver Celestial sphere now is operational. (I'm Completely Operational, and All My Circuits Are Functioning Perfectly!) Sorry for the HAL 9000 computers words.

Again, I am not a programmer. I wonder if there needs to be some tweaking with future BOINC Manager and client?

John

Hi all,
I'm new to this board so please be kind.
I had some issues with getting the Einstein@Home sphere screensaver to run on my various Ubuntu 20.04 Linux computers. Some were addressed already here like making sure that if you want to install the latest version of BOINC you need to fully purge the old one. I ran into this on one of my dual boot HP notebook computer. After I did the command line purge I was able to successfully install the latest version of BOINC. Before I tried to use the Ubuntu Software briefcase to reinstall BOINC. However, BOINC would not start what so ever. Then I remembered using the command line to fully purge the aforementioned BOINC install.

Then I completed a fresh install of BOINC. I sat there watching the BOINC Manager and noticed after a while it wasn't downloading any data from Einstein@Home website after I had connected to the project. There were 4 new data sets that where tagged with downloading. However, I noticed it was taking way too long and my modem wasn't displaying any download activity. So, I decided to experiment with the Computing Preferences. I unchecked two boxes that instructed BOINC to suspend; Suspend when computer is in use and Suspend GPU computing when computer is in use. Again, I UNCHECKED these two. After I unchecked the two boxes BOINC Manager began to successfully download the new Einstein@Home data. The download took a few minutes. After it finished I noticed that the "Show Graphics" button was no longer greyed out. When I clicked on this button a new window opened with the Einstein@Home Celestial Sphere screensaver appeared and is now working!!

I also had done a fresh install on another Ubuntu 20.04 Dell notebook and kept seeing that the display graphics button for Einstein@Home was always greyed out.

When I unchecked those two mentioned above the display button changed and was no longer greyed out. So, I clicked on the button and a new window appeared with the Einstein@Home celestial sphere screensaver working as I had hoped. Why should this be the case? I am not a programmer..

Anyway, I now have BOINC and the Einstein@Home celestial sphere screensaver happy and working on my Ubuntu 20.04 Linux computers!!

So far I can't get the celestial sphere screensaver to load on my Windows 10 Home edition (only) computer. I do get the BOINC logo screensaver with the message that the Einstein@Home screensaver is loading. But, it never does.

Regards,
John
