Posted 8 days ago by ProfileKeithsplace 		Well I figured since I have had the issue for some time on several, I mean like at least 6 different distro's, Windows 11, Boron, Linux mint of different versions, Garuda Linux, Linux mint with the distro package, podman, flatpak, Does't seem to matter. Tried going in and deleting all the web preferences on projects setting, local prefs, manger still has a mind of it's own, sometimes it'll follow sometimes not.
And I have seen others report same, but no answers or recommended fix.

been posted since Sept 5 no answers, replies. Hum. Still have these issues half of my machines follow preferences half varies whether or not they want to work.
I have 7 various machines with Windows10,11, Garuda, Linux Mint, Boron. Seems that the CPU GPU use format should be changed to me, the % CPU count should all be reworked to make it easier for even none geeks to figure out. There's 4 settings that the working is contradictory. Like how about not using the term in use, how about "When the pc idle after this much time run 3 CPU's and GPU."
Just seems when clicking save should use those settings on that machine, not some setting a project somewhere set default.

Ok here we go again. I had switch from the distros or official BOINC to flatpaks as several PC's would do the "don't care what you set "Run based on preferences" to, I would have to set Run Always to run or suspend to stop if, no matter what settings I tried.
Flatpaks worked with Linux Mint and Garuda.
So with the recommendation to install boinc podman-docker (as some projects need it) and others seem to gearing to start using it, I tried running it on several PC's. Well all but the Windows 11 PC fail to follow the "Computing Preferences" setting. As in won't stop unless Suspended is checked and won't start unless Run Always is checked.

Something has clearly changed in the last version or so.
On mutable systems the newest version does not follow local preferences no matter what I try.
I've tried changing web preferences and using them to editing the local and global preferences file
Linux mint 22.1 xia x64 Boinc 8.2.4 (x64) on 4 core intel i5 with GeForce GT730
the preferences are all messed up never seams to follow local or web prefs. it either runs continuous with run always or run based on prefs and have to stop with suspend.
I been using Boinc for years but have never seen this part of it so messed up.
Same issue with Garuda Linux 6.17.1-zen1-1-zen x86_64, Boinc 8.2.4(x64) on Dell with 6 core i5 nVidia GT1030
Same issue with Linux mint 22.2 6.8.0-85 on Asus AMD4 core Phenom with Boinc 8.2.4 (x64) GeForce GT730
Same issue with Linux Mint 22.2 zara 6.8.0-85 on PowerEdge Xeon X3430 with Boinc 8.2.4.(x64) GeForce GT730
Same issue on Windows 11 Boinc 8.2.4(x64) on the same Dell with 6 core i5 again with boinc 8.2.4 and tried 8.2.5 nVidia GT1030
Several other Mint boxes with varying versions.
Along with trying to do docker, podman-docker, the best results were with flatpak on linux boxes but most will not use the older GPU's under Flatpak.
Tried docker on Windows 11 but never got it to work correctly.
All the WLS, docker, podman, flatpak is all way to complicated and I feel boinc is going to be loosing a lot of users till they get a self install that sets everything up
and works, Linux and Windows. I feel like I'm a little more computer savvy than a majority of users, but that's just all ridiculous.
As with these issues I am going to drop Boinc for now and uninstall as I'm not risking my PC's health till it's straightened out.
Let me know what logs are needed with any or all..

Somebody should make a install for dummies I guess, BOINC gonna loose a lot users with all this probably. For sure I may just drop it all
as I am not risking burning up PC's because they won't stop running full blast if you don't suspend manually.

In window attempted docker install, and I'm not a nood BTW, been using BOINC since early seti days.
Seems to be running but none of the docker stuff looks right, and having issues with following preferences on every PC, Linux Mint, Windows, Garuda.

As I have 3 of them in different Distro's that don't seem to be picking up any GPU tasks, just cpu tasks.
I have one other machine with a GT1030 that gets both GPU & CPU pretty much equally on the same projects.
World Community Grid, SiDock, Rosetta, Climateprediction, Asteroids, Milkyway.



The ouput of GT730:

Posted 11 Sep 2025 by ProfileKeithsplace 		I've run into an issue with the couple of different installs on Linux, Mint mainly but think I might have on Garuda Linux as well.
Had been running most on Flatpak/Flathub and all seemed to work great. Saw the "Some projects may need Docker" and that future many project might go that way. So I uninstalled everything both distro boincs, flathub and followed the vague and confusing link path for installing BOINC docker podman or what ever it is, seemed to work fine only nothing in the computing preferences follows what's set.
As in not use GPU or CPU when computer in use, it won't stop unless Suspended in activity, or run when Run always is checked.
I have been using BOINC since the seti@home project, about 2000 or 2001.
And I've seen several people on here with the same issue, is there a fix?

I had switch from the distros or official BOINC to flatpaks as several PC's would do the "don't care what you set "Run based on preferences" to, I would have to set Run Always to run or suspend to stop if, no matter what settings I tried.
Flatpaks worked with Linux Mint and Garuda.
So with the recommendation to install boinc podman-docker (as some projects need it) and others seem to gearing to start using it, I tried running it on several PC's. Well all but the Windows 11 PC fail to follow the "Computing Preferences" setting. As in won't stop unless Suspended is checked and won't start unless Run Always is checked.

Posted 30 Aug 2025 by ProfileKeithsplace 		Here's a few tips that should be put up on the install instructions pages that might help others while transitioning to Docker or Podman.
I was struggling as I had most of my BOINC's running on Linux boxes on flatpak, couple on Windows. On Windows I can't remember the hoops I had to just through before figuring it out but I'll try to go through again on the VM and try to replicate an post later.
Linux Mint and other ubuntu-debian types.
Remove/uninstall all boinc installs first, from distro,boinc site, and flatfpak/flathub etc.
These instructions should be
Install podman:
sudo apt install podman

sudo usermod -a -G boinc $USER

sudo usermod --add-subuids 100000-165535 --add-subgids 100000-165535 boinc

sudo usermod --add-subuids 100000-165535 --add-subgids 100000-165535 PUT_USERNAME_HERE

Reboot, check you user and group and make sure your user name is member of boinc group.
Then install BOINC from https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php for your distribution.

Sure wish someone would figure this out.

Well the copy and paste of cc_config.xml file from another liux machine did not work. Boinc still ran fine but it still didn't follow preferences.
Let it run few days and nothing. Then when I went back into to check the file, it said it was corrupt.
So I tried the basic cc_config.xml file dropped into /var/lib/boinc
This is a minimal configuration file cc_config.xml of the BOINC core client.

This didn't seem to work either. Tried setting prefferences again and it doesn't change the file.
It's like manager doesn't know where to look for file or or is not creating or generating the file.
This particular PC I ma work on this is a Lenovo laptop, which I know is not going to do GPU tasks.
Running Garuda w/Linux 6.7.3-zen1-zen kernel, which is an arch fork from what I gather.
Installed with pamac
Boinc 7.24.1 (x64)
I beleive the download came from chaotic-aur repository

I get this behavior on 2 different PC's where preferences don't take or follow.
The other is an older Box Running Linux Mint with Linux 6.2.0-39 at the moment. but this box has always had same thing.
Kernel and Mint have updated and upgraded through several Mint versions and kernel updates/upgrades.
it is running Boinc 7.22.1 (x64) with Intel Xeon and nVidia GT-730 GPU
I beleive this one runs in Flatpak
On this one all the xml files are in the 
/var/lib/boinc-client
folder.
I couldn't find any xml files in any of flatpak folders pertaining to Boinc.
I'd be willing to try some things if someone has a suggestions.

I run several different distro's some preferences work some don't one old one with a very old GPU rarely ever does follow prefs no matter what I do.
Most of my Linux mint machines run it fine
FFR- Garuda Linux (new for me) the main boinc folder I found in /var/lib/boinc there are other executable files, BOINC is in /home/username,
boinc_client, boinccmd, and boincmgr reside in the /user/bin folder,
I just droped a cc_config.xml file I coppied from another PC into the /var/lib/boinc.
Will test and see if preferences take with that.

Installed it on many different flavors of Linux Mint and others, and Windows, but first on Garuda Linux, which I believe is Arch based.
I found very little help on Garuda site. I never found a repository for boinc.
I did however get it to run from terminal. I think my first attempt was from a shell type terminal, as the Manager would start but no client.
Secondly I did the following to get it to run, although with some issues, I will list them.
I will also list system specs and all other things that I have found that were not what I'm used to seeing.
For installation open terminal 
sudo pacman -Syu boinc

In terminal not sudo
1) I typed 
boinc_client
then 
boincmgr
that is boinc_client not the typical boinc-client
2) The manager and client would start looking normal and I could add projects and start.
Here are issues I've encountered:
1) In manager in simple view computing preferences only opens blank window.
In advanced view I can edit prefs and hit save and seems normal, but they do not take, as setting "stop computing when active" or "Run based on
prefs" any other setting takes. The only way to stop is to suspend.
I'd be glad to work with someone on this as I must be the first to want to install BOINC on a Garuda Linux system, as I have scoured the search engines
Garuda and Boinc for sollutions.
