Android app can't be found in google search
(Message 107915)
Posted 21 Apr 2022 by JLDun Post: While admittedly the "download third party" method is insecure, I would imagine setting a requirement of "Have a popup to approve third party download" would be a way to have 'informed consent' for apps that 'need' it, like BOINC. (That would add an extra step that could break, I know.) EDIT: Fixed typos. |

Posted 22 Mar 2022 by JLDun Post: Currently, it's Universe, or one of the Einstein sub-projects. WCG will be back in about a month or two aver their server migration. Rosetta is iffy for anyone that won't/can't do the Python tasks.... YoYo and Moo arent for newer Androids.... |

7.18.1 Client
(Message 106355)
Posted 8 Dec 2021 by JLDun Post: Caught a fleeting glimpse of the 'will resume when battery is' "issue"; this was right after playing a particular game on my Android phone (Shop Titans). As an incidental, S.T appears to be a memory hog somehow, despise reporting using "273 MB average over past 3 hours"; I'd does still cause BOINC to pause. (The whole thing including cache data takes 750+ MB, and is consistent enough on pausing BOINC (or at least dropping it out of memory)- even when running no tasks, just the client- that I know to do one or the other, but not both. |

Posted 31 Oct 2021 by JLDun Post: First noticed "issue": Occasionally, when adding a project- at the project login, it will flash white and not move (automatically) to the next step. Most of the time when this happens I would need to exit back to the main client, then try to log in again; it does work the second time. (This also happened with 7.18.0) This is on two different LG Stylo 5's, Android 9. |

BOINC Android Client 7.18.1 available
(Message 105509)
Posted 28 Sep 2021 by JLDun Post: After fiddling (and this is on something without mobile data): It can download tasks, but if I uncheck the 'wifi only' option; then it'll (also) do it through the Bluetooth tethering. (And I'm using the tethering to give a bit more control over who's specifically connected at any one time without having to change Hotspot passwords every so often to force disconnect anyone I don't want on at that particular point.) |

BOINC Android Client 7.18.1 available
(Message 105452)
Posted 20 Sep 2021 by JLDun Post: So finally tried something today (because I finally figured out a particular setting today): Two Android devices, one with data internet, the other can tether to it through hotspot/WiFi. I figures out today how to tether the internet connection through Bluetooth (it's slower, but it's workable for things like Opera/Chrome and some YouTube). But... Boinc 7.18 can reserve new tasks, or connect to projects, but won't actually download the task files, through hotspot/Bluetooth. |

Posted 11 Jul 2021 by JLDun Post: For my devices, the one that got the Data collect version 5 v5.03 (android_arm_non_pie) tasks, they all crashed. I suspect you already figured it out, but the "_pie" is Android KitKat and above; "_no_pie" is KitKat and below (With KK being an in-between system that can do both, designed that way). (I wondered when I saw it on Seti, and Wikipedia-ed it once....) |

Posted 9 Jul 2021 by JLDun Post: Rosetta told me I needed another 2.9GB of disk space. Rosetta needs 6675.72 MB RAM: is the restriction really needed? I'm assuming it was one of those WU's that was coded to ask for a large amount of disk space; general consensus is they don't actually need more than 1.5 GB (and sometimes as low as ~400 MB), but they're set to expect needing ~8.5 GB. It's a Rosetta thing. |

BOINC projects running under Android 10
(Message 101304)
Posted 25 Oct 2020 by JLDun Post: Have Rosetta and WCG as your two (attached) projects, and set Boinc to use [#] CPU's. Eventually, Boinc will have the tasks balanced between both projects, to run at the same time. (Personally, I would let it take ~2 days, depending on how long your phone is on, and what you've set for the Rosetta runtimes.) |

BOINC projects running under Android 10
(Message 98878)
Posted 29 May 2020 by JLDun Post: [...]do the two project get split over all four "available" cores? [...]Or is BOINC set to run one task per core only? Wordy Reply: Under big.LITTLE, BOINC "sees" all cores, but is set to use the LITTLE cores only, regardless of how many tasks you have downloaded - in this case, it wouldn't matter if they're all from one project or 8 different projects. So, when you set the '# of cores' slider, it starts with 1 task per core until all LITTLE cores are running (so if you set '3', it will only run 3 tasks on 3 cores, even if you have 18 tasks for example). When you start going above 50% of your cores (#'s 5-8, in this case), each LITTLE core will start switching between 2 task, and each task will receive 50% of the CPU cycles... but each task's "Wall clock" run time keeps running as if it were getting 100% (so the net "wall clock" time is 2x, for the same amount of net 'cpu time's). |
