MUFON is short for 'mutual ufo network', it's the largest US UFO society, and their site is mufon.com They maintain a national network of investigators that respond to ufo sightings, they are very professional, too. I was an investigator until ~2013 or so, I live at the Canadian border and when drones started to appear I figured it was time to move on.

MUFON is very agnostic about UFOs, "we don't know one way or another", the mission is to log activity in the sky and gather physical evidence. And believe me, that's interesting enough even without any extraterrestrials involvement, but 95% of the reports are explainable. As for UFO websites, it's a damn goofy field and it's hard to find serious researchers, however, they're out there.. and as for alternative websites, I'm afraid all my knowledge is old and wouldn't be of much help. I'm a mundane, unfortunately.

Good luck with that.

Yes! Thanks! It'll be a big project... I went on an expedition one afternoon and filled a spreadsheet with ~200 projects, current and closed, not counting Moo! and other multi-project projects. Swing by boinc.info, we can talk about it more there (and any other interested parties are invited, too.)

Confabulation... Sums up many of those on the Seti forums

Agreed! I was a MUFON UFO Field Investigator for a few years, and I've met some of the most.. amazing people.

Thanks! I'm glad to be here.. I've been following the threads for a couple of months now, and it's definitely a great group. And caught up on British politics, too.. I lie somewhere along the independent-telegraph axis, myself, but that's just me. American politics is all scripted now, unfortunately, not worth following.. and brace yourself for Hillary. That's why I live at the border.

'Mercenary technician' is known locally as a 'job-shop tech'. Hired through an agency and are sent out projects, mostly prototype development, large orders, vacation or vacancy relief, etc. It's a very popular arrangement in an industry with very short product cycles and rabidly evolving technology and staff. I had a whole lot of fun, an experience like none other.

Thanks for the link on the recent budget.. I'm not surprised that something like this could happen, anything with 'aliens' is too tempting target to be negotiated away.. oh, well. It seems to me like '@Home' is more concept than organization right now.. maybe redefining boinc as the '@Home' standard, with seti as just another project, and find funding under the @Home banner? It seems to be a natural step of evolution

I have to admit I'm getting deeper into boinc than most. To me, it's an amazing phenomenon, 15 years of purely organic growth, only by word of mouth, with active users growing by ~2000 people a day. I think many newcomers aren't ready for the chaos, though. To that end I'm thinking of starting a directory site for boinc, a listing of projects and a few tutorials to get the newcomer started and prepare them for what lies beyond.

That's it for me.. I have to go think of a word that has to do with 'stumped'..

Oh! A thread! I better defend myself.. I have to apologize, I'm a newb. The gold-jailed transition is a 'goaled' pun. It's quite a good pun, imho, so I'm not going to apologize even though I probably should.

And I thought themes were ok.. oh, well. As you can see, I'm new to the tribe and still bumping into things.

As for me, my name is Ed, I'm a ex-mercenary technician from Silicon Valley, 60, semi-retired near Seattle, AE7LH. I went to school at St. Joseph's of Cupertino church, across the street from the old Apple HQ. Worked at over 25 different companies, from Atari to Plantronics, and I've enjoyed it immensely.

Now that I have some spare time I've been getting back into boinc, and marveling at how much it's grown over the years.. and I see a great future ahead for @Home
