1) Message boards : Projects : MooWrapper Trojan (Message 111041)

Perhaps use a Linux machine or one without malwarebytes installed. You could use a Linux live distro from a usb stick. None of the browsers on my Linux box seem to object to it.

Thanks for your comment. I'm a former Unix user, but I have little experience with Linux distros. None of the browsers on my Win11 box object either. Malwarebytes is an antivirus, not a browser, and avoiding the problem doesn't solve it.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. The question is: why does moowrap.net return a too-long record (a suspicious condition), and does the website contain a Trojan. It's still being flagged today.

Post:
Malwarebytes blocked the MooWrapper domain today, and provided the following message:

Secure Connection Failed

An error occurred during a connection to moowrap.net. SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length.

Error code: SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.

Overlong records is a classic malfeasance technique, so the block is justified, but how does one contact the website owners if it's blocked?

Hi Jord,

Thanks for your comments. My Windows is 64bit, and the 7.14.2 reference persisted even after multiple cache clearings and restarts, but I've been able to get and install 7.20.2 since. Hope it stays fixed for the next release!

Cheers,

Ardis

I see the release notes for 7.20.2, but when I go to the downloads page it shows 7.14.2. If I download the file anyway the popup tool tips also refer to 7.14.2. How do I get the latest version?

Error code: SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG

That's the error message that appears when I try to attach a new computer to the project, and also when I try to report it by logging in to the message board. Hoping somebody will see this and let them know.
6) Message boards : Projects : Can't create LHC@home account (Message 105159)

Post:
I'm trying to join LHC@home. There is an entry in my passwords, but I think it got corrupted. If I click "forgot password", the response is, "No account exists with that email address." If I use the BOINC Manager > Tools > Add Project route and go through all the steps, it says, "login failed, check user name and password." Going to https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/ produces the same result. I can't post to the message boards without an account, so I'm posting here. How to proceed?
7) Message boards : Web interfaces : Title edits do not appear in Preview (Message 103810)
Posted 2 Apr 2021 by Ardis
Post:
There was a typo in one of my recent message titles so I went to edit the message. I tried three times, but the change did not show up in the preview. It was only one letter, so I gave up and clicked OK. Much to my surprise, the added letter appeared as intended in the posted title. This has got to be one of the most trivial bugs in the history of the interwebs, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. Or maybe it's actually a feature. It would have been fun to have found this yesterday.

Cheers, y'all, and TGIF.

Oops. Perhaps this comment belongs here in Documentation instead of on the Android board.

It says:

Now that there is a new Android app, is it time to update the Help page? The last revision was in June 2020 and includes a bunch of workarounds for the previous version.

(hope I don't get in trouble for posting it twice)

I installed BOINC on my Android One phone yesterday. Today, I went to see how it was doing. Four WUs crunching, credit shown for this device, all good. I hit the back button a couple times looking for something else, and there was the login screen, with my password in all its plain text glory. Is that what should be happening? Wouldn't it be better to wipe the password? Basically the issue is: Awk, bad security!

Post:
7.12 is running fine on one machine, but not so great on the laptop. It said during installation a reboot would be needed, but every time I reboot since installing, a pop up with a red X appears that says "A reboot is required in order for BOINC to run properly. Please reboot your computer and try again."
I've tried repairing, deleting and re-installing, even gone back to 7.10.2. Can't get rid of that pop up. Any ideas?
14) Message boards : Questions and problems : Can't create LHC@home account (Message 84455)
Posted 21 Jan 2018 by Ardis
Post:
Yeah, I tried that, but I just tried it again to be sure. Email address not registered.

So I started playing with the password: 18 characters, 16... all the way down to six, same error message - "check your email and password and try again." Then I tried a 5 char. password (minimum is 6) and got a different error message about the password being too short. All this would suggest that it's the email address that is causing the problem, not the password.

I guess I could try to register with a different email account, but I'd rather not, and would I be able to change it later? No clue what the issue might be with the email address, other than the underscore. Why would LHC have different requirements than the other projects, and why would they reject a valid address?

Post:
Well, I tried to create an account at LHC@home today, and failed. Attempts were made using both BOINC Manager and the LHC web site. Both said to check my email address and password and try again. I did, several times. Nothing seemed funny about the password (~20 char. {A-Z}[a-z][0-9]), and it's a new account, so I'm guessing the issue is the email address, which contains an underscore (_). Could that be the problem? It's an account that I've used for several years in general, and also used to set up all my other BOINC accounts. Is there something different about the LHC validity check that doesn't allow valid email addresses?

Since I don't have an account, I was not able to post to the LHC forum, so I'm hoping someone will see it here.

Post:
Sorry for the delayed response; I was on a roll with a web page and didn't want to restart 'til that was over.

Thanks for your suggestions. The problem seems to have been solved with a uninstall/reinstall of my firewall (ZoneAlarm). There was apparently some conflict with the latest WinXP security updates, and ZA wouldn't run when I restarted.

BOINC Mgr. has been running for several hours now, and is behaving quite nicely. Given that the unresponsiveness problem would appear within a few minutes of restart, I'm willing to assume that all is well. Now, if it would just remember its dimensions and where I put it, that would be BOINC nirvana.

It's just Windows complaining that it can't find a description about this service anywhere. It doesn't hamper the running of the service.

Indeed, the service, afaict, is running fine, but right-clicking the tray icon does nothing. I've looked at some of the linked articles but didn't see any addressing this issue. Suggestions?

Hold on, despite its name, boinctray.exe does not run from the system tray.

...

So it's BOINC Manager that seems to be crashing on you.
Can you check in Event Viewer (Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer) if there's anything there with regards to BM crashing 9In the Applications section most likely)?

Else, please navigate to your BOINC Data directory and check if there's anything in the stderrgui.txt and stdoutgui.txt files.

Oh. Ohhhh! Thanks for the education! I think I might have understood SETI better, before BOINC.

There are indeed several BOINC events in the viewer: category None, type Information, event 1.

stderrgui.txt has a bunch of Skin Manager errors which all seem to end with "using default."
stdoutgui.txt contains over 800 kb of various messages. Here are the last few entries:

[snip]
[10/11/08 22:11:26] TRACE [2872]: RPC_CLIENT::init boinc_socket returned 476

[10/11/08 22:11:26] TRACE [2872]: RPC_CLIENT::init connect returned -1

[10/11/08 22:11:26] TRACE [2872]: RPC_CLIENT::init attempting connect

[/snip]

Some of those might be related to my practice of starting up with the modem off until the firewall is running. That usually resolves itself once the modem is turned on, but once in a while I'll need to "retry communication" in BM.

What is boincmgr's "event 1"?

Regards,

Ardis

Boinctray.exe has started misbehaving. At startup it works fine, then after a few minutes the tooltip stops updating and right click doesn't do anything. The projects seem to be unaffected: crunching continues, but I can't access the manager to see what's going on. I can start another instance, but then there are two running, and it tends to confuse things. I installed 6.2.19 to see if that would help. It didn't. What can I do to get it unstuck?

Ardis
