It could be one of the Sonoma breakages.

Mac BOINC 7.24.1 (running PrimeGrid on AMD Radeon Pro 5300 4 GB) is not respecting "Suspend GPU computing when computer is in use" being checked. "Suspend when computer is in use" is respected. Is this a known bug?

Dropping back to 7.10.3 fixes the "Suspend when non-BOINC CPU usage" bug in 7.14.2 on MacOS 10.13.6. I haven't tried intermediate versions.

Thanks, Richard, that explains the confusion I read about the subject. Then again, "permission" is exactly what "BOINC may switch between them this often" means.

As far as I can tell, and from what I've read in various BOINC project fora, BOINC sometimes (always?) ignores "Switch between tasks every N minutes" and makes its own decisions based on many things, eg, deadline, project, CPU speed, etc. Mine is currently running SETI due in 2019, and I can't seem to make it switch to Rosetta due in a few days, no matter how many minutes I enter for the switch. I do trust that it will get Rosetta done in time. But I wonder: Is there some other setting I've made that prevents project/task switching? Do you readers have any hints? Thanks.

Reverting to 7.12.0 (MacOS 10.13.6) fixes "Suspend when non-BOINC..." but not "Switch between tasks..."

Adding <checkpoint_debug> to 7.12.0 shows (30s checkpoint, 1m switch):

but I don't get task switches (to Rosetta, Milkyway, SETI) which are "Waiting to run"

Is there more debugging to turn on to see why tasks aren't switched?

When I set a low limit (like 1%) I can't get BOINC to suspend itself. "Activity/Suspend" works, but "Activity/Run based on preferences" doesn't. This used to work. Anyone else seen this? Running SETI, Rosetta, Milkyway, Einstein, climate prediction (not active). Thanks.

When running four MacBook Air CPUs at 25% time (to keep them all cool and the fan off), they tend to run simultaneously, such that, e.g., every four seconds they all take one second from other processes, then are quiet for three seconds.

Can you make them run round robin instead, spreading out the load over the four seconds?
10) Message boards : Questions and problems : Dropping out of BOINC due to Mac Leopard 10.5 scheduling change (Message 20595)

Post:
I have been slowly upgrading my various work and home Macs to Leopard 10.5. At each upgrade I remove BOINC due to the change Apple made to the scheduler in Leopard: -nice is now ignored. This makes CPUs run hot, with the fans on, and takes significant time from foreground apps. Prior to this current credit meltdown the world was more peaceful, with BOINC and FAH apps using truly spare cycles in the background, keeping cool and unobtrusive.

I filed a bug with Apple, but they said this change was intended.

Can the BOINC and FAH researchers put pressure on Apple to revert this change? I think there are others who have removed these formerly green apps from their Macs. Thanks!
