Ok, exiting it, then returning to it and waiting a few minutes seemed to work. Thank you! |

Ok, after a month or two, I decided to check this again . . . and I noticed in BOINC, when I click the "Project" tab then the "Update" option, it says what it said last time: Communication Deferred. Can anyone explain what is happening? Why can't I get work tasks? I've used this computer for years, for Mapping Cancer (World Community Grid), and never had this problem. I have ample hdd space. I don't know what is happening. Thank you. |

The title says it all. I apologize in advance. I am not sharpest tool when it comes to computers. I do enjoy BOINC but my understanding, and usage, is rather basic. For the past 2 months, I have had trouble using BOINC. The only project that I use is the World Community Grid. Both my old and new computer don't run anything when I try getting tasks, etc. I even did a clean install of my entire computer. The problem remains. BOINC and World Community Grid are unresponsive. I did see a notice on the BOINC page reading ". . . there will be no new tasks at least until the end of February." Does that mean all of BOINC is down until then? Or is it only for a select few programs? Or am I doing something wrong? Here are my hardware and software stats: Mint 22.1 - Mate 1.26.2 i3 cpu 540 at 3.07ghz CPU - 4 - Thread(s) per core: 2 - Core(s) per socket: 2 4gb ram BOINC 7.24.1+dfsg-4build1 (it won't launch even if I click on it in the MATE menu) I did ensure that the groups BOINC and Whore (my Mint account) are check marked in Mint's "Users and Groups" and yes, my Mint account is sudo, if that matters. Even if BOINC server is down, then the program should still launch from my desktop if I click "Launch". Correct? I am stuck and appreciate any help. Thank you. |
4) Message boards : Questions and problems : Help me understand the "Resource Share" data

noderaser, I appreciate your explanation. As a follow-up: You stated "One "workaround" would be to designate a project as CPU or GPU only, which you can do through the project preferences page." I currently do so with my E@H project. It is set to "GPU Only". All other projects are "CPU Only". Question: If I keep my E@H project to "GPU Only" then is that "20%" still relevant? Thank you. |

Follow-up: 1) What do you mean "separate weight counters"? Do you mean I could have my "cpu-only" tasks add to 100% AND have my "gpu-only" tasks add to 100% without including the "cpu-only" tasks? 2) What exactly is the "resource" I am allocating? For example, when I put "1000" for a project task, it shows 20% in parenthesis. What is this 20%? Is it cpu cycles or something else? 3) Does this "resource share" % relate to the amount of "credit" I receive upon completing a task? Thank you again for your help. |

In the "Advanced View" under the "Projects" tab, there is column labeled "Resource Share". What is that "resource" being shared? For Example: I have a total of 5 projects. All are set to "CPU only" except the Einstein project which is "GPU only". 1 - POGS - set to CPU only - 1000 (20%) 2 - Mind Modeling - set to CPU only - 1000 (20%) 3 - World Community Grid - set to CPU only - 1000 (20%) 4 - Rosetta - set to CPU only - 1000 (20%) 5 - Einstein - set to GPU only - 1000 (20%) Questions: A - What does the "1000" mean? B - What does the "20%" mean? C - The Einstein project uses very little CPU. Instead it uses mostly GPU. How does that impact this "Resource Shared" data? Thank you for your clarification. This has puzzled me for weeks. |

Would the "used dedicated" memory include what my OS uses just to run stuff? Would it include other BOINC programs I run at the same time? Thank you. |

Help me better understand my GPU? My system: CPU: i3-540 dual core hyper thread @ 3.06 ghz SYS RAM: 4 GB OS: 14.04 Kubuntu 64 bit GPU: Nvidia GTS-250 1 GB Driver Version 331.113 I use my GPU for the Einstein project. Everything works well but I just want to better understand what is happening. My Nvidia monitoring program shows: Total Memory: 1024 MB Total Dedicated Memory: 1024 MB Used Dedicated Memory: 334 MB (this value changes somewhat) GPU Utilization: 58% (this value changes every second or two) Video Engine Utilization: 0% (this has always been 0%) In particular: * What is "dedicated" memory? * Why is my "used dedicated" memory no where near the 1024 MB total? * What is "Video Engine Utilization"? My hope is that I can better understand what is happening and perhaps crank more usage from the GPU. Thank you in advance. |

Forgive my newbie and noob ignorance: How could I determine which program is spamming it? |

My bad - I should have read that post more clearly. Having said that, I have no idea how to stop something like the syslog daemon. Is there a tutorial somewhere? In the meantime, I will see what a google search reveals. Thank you for the help. |

Update: I deleted the log files but now they are back. They are not yet as large as before, but they are rapidly growing. How can I prevent the logs from growing so rapidly? |

Message 60986 Posted 16 Mar 2015 by whore |
I couldn't open the "log" files. It just froze and crashed. Of course, the smallest one was nearly 20 gb so I can understand why it froze and crashed. Thus, I couldn't examine them. I did delete them though. So far, there is no ill effect. |

Since I started using BOINC, I've noticed some unusual hdd usage. My hdd has a 500 gb capacity. It will soon fillup if this continues. Here are my stats. This is a BOINC-only computer. It does nothing else so the /root should be a much smaller size: - 64 bit Kubuntu 14.04 - A6-7400k - 4 gb ddr3 system ram I think I narrowed the large files to the following: #1 - /var/log/syslog.1 (this is about 36 GiB) #2 - /var/log/kern.log (this is about 126 GiB) #3 - /proc/kcore (128 TiB) Questions: A) What are those 3 files? B) May I safely delete them? C) How can one file be 128 TiB if my entire hdd is only 500 GB? If it helps, then here are the BOINC projects I work: - RNA World - The Lattice Project - Citizen Science Grid - Rosetta - Mind Modeling - Poem - World Community Grid - Einstien (uses GPU) Thank you in advance for your time. |
15) Message boards : Questions and problems : Is BOINC storing hidden data on my hdd?
Message 60971 Posted 15 Mar 2015 by whore |
Newbie here - I just noticed something in my "Total Disk Usage" tab: - Used by BOINC: 925.97 MB - Free, available to BOINC: 244.14 GB - Used by Other Programs: 187.78 GB How is it possible that I am using 187.78 GB if BONIC is the only thing running on this pc? This is a BOINC dedicated pc. Other than Skype, it has no other purpose and only the minimal updated applied. Is BOINC hiding data on my hdd and not recognizing it? I doubt it is doing so but that is the only answer my (limited experience) can comprehend. My system: - 64 bit Kubuntu 14.04 - root partition is about 440 GB total - home partition is about 25 GB total What could be taking up 187 GB of space? At most, I suspect my OS is 10 GB uncompressed. Is there some way I can learn what is taking up that space? It wasn't always like that. Thank you. |
16) Message boards : GPUs : Why don't these listed drivers work?
Message 60797 Posted 9 Mar 2015 by whore |
To answer your question, I run my VGA cable from the gts 250. When I run it from the A6 CPU (motherboard) nothing happens. |
17) Message boards : GPUs : Why don't these listed drivers work?
Message 60796 Posted 9 Mar 2015 by whore |
I am only interested in the gts 250. So, do I correctly understand that the computer is basically "confused" because there are technically 2 detected GPU? Thus, I might be able to work around the issue by disabling the integrated GPU. Correct? |

Message 60766 Posted 9 Mar 2015 by whore |
I like using pclos but oh my God, I don't understand anything you just wrote. Is there an easier "for dummies" way of getting it to work? I have tried both Kubuntu 14.04 and pclos 2014-Aug release, and couldn't get my Nvidia GTS 250 (g92 based) gpu to work. It looks like you found a method, but that is way beyond my skill level. |
19) Message boards : GPUs : Why don't these listed drivers work?
Message 60765 Posted 9 Mar 2015 by whore |
Forgive me if this is a silly question. I am not very tech savvy. I have an old computer with an Nvidia GTS 250 gpu. I want to use the gpu for BOINC but am having horrible luck. Nothing works. Look here: https://imageshack.com/i/p85Vfnfhp Do you see those listed Nvidia drivers? I've tried each. Upon rebooting, each returns the same result: a blank black screen. What is going on? How is it that all the drivers "black out" my screen upon reboot? Does this mean I can't use my gpu? My "box" includes: - 64bit Kubuntu 14.04 - 4 gb ddr3 system ram - Nvidia GTS 250 gpu (g92 based) - AMD A6-7400k cpu |
20) Message boards : Questions and problems : New BOINC user wants to do 2 projects at the same time
Message 60705 Posted 6 Mar 2015 by whore |
So, would I need to have multiple "BOINC" managers running, or would I only need one instance running? It sounds like you are saying I would only need one instance running for all BOINC but I would use individual project pages to handle individual project details. Is that a fair summary? Thank you again! |
