It's down.
And on the 4th of July, too. That (slightly) surprised me.

I think there is an automatic component to a lot of things associated with the Tuesday outages.

<ed>Maybe Eric wanted Angela to come to bed?

Merciful heavens! Such speculation!!! I feel like the subject of a celebrity gossip magazine...

Well, since everyone is so curious, I did, in fact, tell Eric that "my stories" were down last night. He sent an email to the people at the data center. They eventually re-booted the web server.

When "my stories" came back up, Eric neglected to tell me... so I'd go to bed!

Who would-da thunk it?

Truly though, I wish you peace... peace and sobriety.

As the scene implies, just assume I can watch and listen to everything from anybody.

Really? Ok. I give you permission to peruse my personal account at seti.

Who was the last person I pm'd at seti?

Who is the last person who pm'd me?

These should be easy things for a person of your vast programming skills to ascertain. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.

I use it to my advantage, and will not harm a flea. Just know that I have abilities above and beyond what you may expect. And nothing you say or do on the boards is safe from me.

If anyone actually believed that there was even a shred of credibility to your braggadocio, your account would be banned into perpetuity for violating everyone's right to privacy! And justifiably so, I might add.

You really need help on so many, many, many levels.

Tofu is disgusting imo too, and I still deeply regret trying it :)

I am not a vegetarian, and I almost always cook meat for company, but the majority of our nightly meals are vegetarian, just to tread a little more lightly on Mother Earth. Last night, for example, we had homemade margaritas, made from the lemons and limes we grow in our backyard, and for dinner I made vegetarian nachos using black beans, onions, bell peppers and ripe red jalipeno peppers, which I also grew in our backyard, and a some of the last of my backyard cherry tomatoes.

(Given enough tequila, 'Ol Pookers doesn't even notice we have frequent meatless meals!)

Anyway, I would like to make a case for tofu. Tofu of medium density, seared on a grill and tossed with stir fried vegetables, can be quite delicious. The key is using enough soy sauce to season your finished product so that the tofu tastes lively, but not overly salty. Tempeh is also delicious in a vegetable stir fry and it has a very nice, chewy texture. Silken tofu is best in miso soup, where it "belongs", but it is also ok blended into dips. There is not much to get excited about when it comes to silken tofu.

If you do not care for tofu, it may be that you have tried only silken tofu, or that you tried a type of tofu in an inappropriate application for its density/texture.

I am not certain but it looks to me like them millennial
people are turning out to be pretty good parents.

I don't know about millennials parenting yet, but I have found millennials to be an absolutely delightful generation.

I ride the public trains (BART) frequently in our area and whenever I happen to ride BART during times there are lots of millennials riding, such as times when they are on their way to and from school, these polite youngsters (to whom I look older than Methuselah's cat!) pop up all over the BART car and offer me places to sit. I usually politely decline, as I'm only 53 and have no problem standing on a moving train, but still, it is nice to be asked. I am generally not afforded this same courtesy when I ride BART during commute hours and the trains are more filled with people aged 35 to 65.

Give me millennials any day!!!

Your verbosity does not land you in the penalty box. Your abusive behavior and your potty mouth land you in the penalty box.

... and some who have been entitled with the mod tag come down and me.

I have yet to participate in one of your ban votes that was not unanimous, so in the above phrase please substitute "all" for "some".

...And ban me for a couple of weeks so they don't have to deal with my posts.

You are given multiple warnings before each ban, but you tend to need more babysitting than any team of reasonable adults should EVER be asked to provide.

An important step in recovery from addiction is to start taking responsibility for your actions.

I see you are not there yet.

Oh? Is something called Seti back up? Oh goodie, whoopie doo, let joy be unconfined, buy the cat a goldfish, now I have a meaning in life again. I can come out of hermit mode, and stop wringing my hands, and ditch these sackcloth and ashes clothes. Not very beguiling at the best of times.

I shall immediately face Berkeley and pray to the great god in the Colo for my salvation.

[tounge in cheek off]

Honestly guys :-)))

4 days ago one of my i5 rigs threw a wobbly and didn't recognise the graphics card any more. Today was the first time I could be bothered to log in remotely anddo anything about it. Updated to the latest Nvidia drivers and all is well now. Missed 4 days crunching, I will go and sit on the naughty step and hope Eric is still talking to me :-)

Chris, your post is very funny and our cats are now wondering why they never get any goldfish, but I would be remiss in my worship of the Irony Gods if I did not point out that your posting history here, and your posting history with the account you use for our seti team forum, reveals regular and frequent interactions with community members.

So while you may not be overly concerned about the crunching aspects of this project, you certainly cannot deny that the social aspects of the project pull you right in, just as much as the crunching aspects may pull in others.

Judge not, lest ye be judged!

In other words they all had a good talk about it but nothing has changed!

Because it did not need to change yet. My point was only that human beings have the capacity to tweak dogma without upsetting the apple cart.

...No evidence for one shred of it...

Of course, because it is a matter of "faith". Faith is something you believe in without needing, or perhaps even wanting evidence. That is why it is called a "gift".

I would also expect a big change from belief in Creationism to Evolution, and the realisation that Darwin was right all along.

Unless I am confusing my upbringing, I believe that the Catholic Church is ok with evolution. Sure it took them a couple of centuries to get there, but as far as I can recall, faith is considered to be compatible with science (...with all apologies to Galileo for having the misfortune to have lived in a time before the Catholic Church got more comfy-cozy with accepted science principles!)

Sure there are some religious fundamentalist sects, across many different religions, that involve quite literal interpretation of their holy scriptures, but I think the Catholic Church got over that quite some time ago.

(Do we have any Catholic priests or nuns in the house? Correct me, please, if I am wrong about this.)

Anyway...

... Got to keep the sheeple happy. ...

That was unkind; and I do hope that on some level "New Chris" recognized that.

I have long thought that the capacity to have faith is something adaptive that our species developed. Most people on the globe, historically and to this day, have had some sense of faith - whether they worship the wind, ascribe qualities to the constellations or pray to an earthly fertility goddess. The cast of characters playing god or gods differs across cultures and changes across time, but the fact that most human cultures tend to HAVE religious beliefs does not change much. Man has always had a relationship with god(s).

The gift of faith shields one, to some degree, from life's deepest despairs and from life's greatest fears. Religion can give a person a structure to make sense of perceived disorder. Religion can give a person hope in the face of hopelessness. A relationship with god can give one joy... or so I've been told.

Chris, instead of calling those with the gift of faith "sheeple", perhaps we should instead agree that you and I have "defective gene mutations" in that we are missing something that comes so easily to most other humans and that serves most human beings quite well. Do keep in mind, my friend, that mutations are FAR more likely to be disadvantageous, than to be advantageous.

Good grief! Only you, "New Chris", can get under my collar enough to motivate me crawl up onto a soapbox to defend religion!!!

Every religion there is in the world is based upon that their God created our heaven and earth and the stars in the firmament etc. If the world knew about ET the Pope and other religious leaders might have some difficult questions to answer! Bear in mind 90% of the 7 Billion people on this planet subscribe to some religion or another. If all that collapsed in a flash you'd have a lot of rather unsettled people.

Although I do not have the gift of faith, I sincerely doubt that the discovery of an E.T. signal would crash all the world's religions. I think that confirmed existence of E.T. could be easily incorporated into most world religions. If one's religion involves the belief that god created the heavens and the earth... well, wouldn't E.T. just be seen as yet another glorious creation of god?

For example: http://www.universetoday.com/44713/vatican-holds-conference-on-extraterrestrial-life/

As a species, we tend to be quite good at rationalization and tweaking our dogma so that it continues to work for us.

...the security agencies would likely block it from public knowledge.

LOL, my friend!!! Conspiracy theorists (and I know you are not one of those!!!) often say just that. To them I always query, in this day of totally rampant social media, how long do you think a secret of that import could actually be kept?

A alien signal, if detected, would have to be confirmed and re-confirmed by several teams of scientists all over the globe. It would only take one tiny leak before, about ten seconds later, the whole world knew.

To quote the Grand Dame of seti, Dr. Jill Tarter:

"We have barely begun to search!

Consider the following experiment to answer the question of whether there are any fish in the Earth’s oceans. Fill an 8-ounce cup with water from an ocean, and look to see if you captured any fish in your cup. That experiment could work; the smallest fish is about a millimeter in size, and while you couldn’t fit a great white shark into your cup, many species of fish would fit just fine. There are no fish in your cup. What do you conclude? That there are no fish in the ocean? That you were just unlucky and scooped your cup of water from an unusually barren patch of ocean? Or that your cup is a poor tool, and that you haven’t yet sampled enough of the Earth’s oceans to draw any conclusions about the prevalence of fish?"

Mark, I do not expect to find E.T. within my life time either. There is nothing disheartening to me about that realization.

I look because it is fun to do so! That is more than enough reward for me.

More likely a big stink in the Politics part in Seti.
Still I find it curious, that the Mods there are also suppossedly clueless.

Given that, I also know, at times zipped lips are required.

Eric is generally most open out those issues, so hopefully we can have an update on the issue tomorrow.

Eric and I are currently in Guadalajara. Eric gave a talk at a conference here today. Jeff is holding down the fort for the week.

Nah - they don't tell us anything, they'll have a script for that:

"Every %Today% morning we begin a four hour data distribution outage for database and systems maintenance."

Seriously - they are so short-staffed that they will have automated everything it's possible to automate.

That is exactly correct. It updates automatically, and unfortunately that means that some people will get very upset if this results in a message with an error in it.

Honestly!!! I cannot even believe that this was a "thing"!!!

Oh for Pete's sake! I think we can see here who is really out of their tree!! No real evidence whatsoever.

Rubbish

I don't think stuff gets published in Nature without rigorous review. I'm sure it is at least possible, maybe even plausible.

To me it sounds like an interesting use of relatively new technology to do some forensic detective work on cells that have turned to stone, but maintained their pattern integrity. The part about experienced orthopedic surgeons finding the fractures consistent with patterns seen in human falls victims seemed particularly interesting to me.

Why do you think it is "rubbish"?
