They continued running again after the reboot, no errors, but I just wondered if it intelligently checked to see if the last bit of data was bad before blindly continuing.

Would it intelligently check and show me if the tasks were somehow corrupted, or would it just continue blindly?

Can I do anything (such as test them, like carry out a CRC or parity check or something) to make sure it hasn't corrupted them? Or shave off the last 1% or something?

The tasks are 90% the way through. Over 200 hrs of computation on each CPU core.

Had a serious lockup on my computer earlier (nothing to do with BOINC, I think). However, BOINC was running in the background at the time.

Everything froze, both the screen and the mouse and keyboard, so I couldn't even do a Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Had to reboot the computer by pressing the Reset button on the tower unit.

Would the BOINC tasks have been corrupted by the PC crash?

Would it be possible to suggest true multithreading (parallel processing) as a future software upgrade for BOINC?

One other benefit would be more efficient memory usage, as only one task is carried out at a time, as opposed to holding 2 or 4 tasks worth of memory at any one time depending on how many cores are being used.

If you'd like this feature, please post here and show the developers your support.

Wouldn't it be nice for all cores to share one task, instead?

I have an Intel Q9450 2.67GHz quad core CPU.

On the longer Climate Prediction models it will take each core 1457 hours (121 days @ 12hrs a day) to complete each task. It's a long time to commit to. I'm always chopping up my operating system and shifting things around.

Would have been nice to have it do just one task in a quarter of the time by allowing the quad core to support multithreading. Then I can commit to tasks more temporarily and do one task in a quarter of the time, instead of having four on the go.

Am I alone in this? I know no-one's forcing me to do the tasks, but I really want to do them (albeit more conveniently).

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I was thinking more along the lines of having X jobs (where X is the number of CPUs/core you have) being processed at any one time, with X more stored in your cache waiting to be executed. Then each time one cpu/core finishes a job, it starts a new one from your cache, and then a new job is automatically requested from the internet to refill the cache back up to X again.

Anyway, I'll tweak the Network Usage settings to achieve something akin to the same effect. :)

It's strangely addictive watching a quad core process all those jobs. I thought it would make the computer a bit sluggish, since BOINC's default usage is set to 100% CPU usage (further confirmed in Windows Task Manager [Alt+Ctrl+Del] - nailed to the roof on all cores!), but it doesn't seem to affect other applications! Good job I've got some decent cooling on there, too. ;)

Is there a way to limit how many jobs (tasks) are added your cache? Like, only allow 4 jobs maximum in your "in-tray" at any time, for example.

When I want to suspend a project, it'd be nice just to select the "Stop new tasks", and then letting the existing jobs finish gracefully. Otherwise there's 60 or so tasks still left in your cache. I like a clean deck! ;) And it would help my quad-core CPU finish processing multiple jobs gracefully.
