1) Message boards : Questions and problems : App version needs OpenCL but GPU doesn't support it (Message 48282)

Fedora and Ubuntu are most likely using Journaled file systems (ext3, ext4). This means that each version of the file saved to the file system gets a version number appended to the end of the file name.

I know that this is true for both of the Linux Distros tht I am using (both Fedora and Ubuntu)

However, this is not the sole issue.

I have the recommended Files block in xorg.conf, and i set a link in the file system to show libOpenCL.so as a linked file, but Boinc still does NOT recognize that the driver supports OpenGL/CL for this GTX660 Ti

I repeat myself for emphasis, BOINC does NOT recognize that OpenGL/CL is a supported protocol for Nvidia 304.64 driver on Fedora 18 Nvidia has examined all my related files and says that the installation of the driver and configuration of xorg.conf are CORRECT!

And last but not least, BAM! account manager does not recognize the strings of data sent by BOINC 7.0.29 on Fedora 18. The problem appears to be related to the OpenGL/CL issue.

CUDA apps are running happily in this environment, some BOINC apps will NOT run as they insist on OpenCL/GL support
2) Message boards : Questions and problems : Problems moving Linux BOINC client directory (Message 48259)

I can attest to this solution.

I am running Fedora 18 with BOINC 7.0.29

I copied the contents of /var/lib/boinc (on a small SSD) to the hard drive where Ubuntu resides. Created an entry in fstab to mount the hard drive directory.

Next a shell script uses mount --bind to map the mount point + path on the hard drive to /var/lib/boinc

This takes the data, which could easily exceed 5-10GB off the SSD
3) Message boards : Questions and problems : Cuda Computation error caused by unknown Nvidia driver version (Message 48258)

While not a CUDA problem, I too see problems with BOINC on Fedora 18

1. Boinc initially does not see the client, but on dismissing the error message, the manager successfully connects almost all the time.

2. The stock Nvidia driver, 304.64, pulled from the rpm repositories is one that worked well in Ubuntu 12.04. However, when BOINC manager starts, the second line of the Event Log that deals with the GPU is not there, and OpenGL is not enabled. Several apps depend on this capability so they abort before they get downloaded.

3. BOINC v7.0.29 cannot communicate with the manager BAM! at Boincstats.com. There are four error messages that seem to point to one or more .xml files

Use of GPUs adds much to the research possibilities, however, not all our computers are equipped the same, so if we want to use a GPU for a project, we must also declare that project off limits in BOINC on the computer that has a miniscule GPU.

Main machine has an NVidia GTX 560 338 cores, 1GB RAM.
Laptop has an Nvidia NVS 135 8 cores, 128MB free RAM

Seti, GPUGrid, Milkyway are just of a few projects that will use Nvidia and/or ATI GPUs to speed processing, yet, I must also BAN these projects from the CPU on the laptop. YUCK.

So I am HOPING for a future update to BOINC to allow us to select on a HOST basis, rather than on a PROJECT basis whether we want to use a GPU
5) Message boards : Questions and problems : Linux (Ubuntu) install (Message 43317)

Ubuntu downloads and installs only version 6.33, as 6.34 is not yet in the apt-get database. Boinc Manager keeps sending me notices to download, install, and run v6.34. I am unable to do this as I am a novice at Linux. So I wait for Ubuntu to add v6.34 to its database or someone here to steer me down the path to a successful install of the version from this web site

Ran the microsoft cleanup utility. It did not highlight a BOINC issue, but it did do a cleanup on the microsoft installer.

Reinstalled 5.10.45 using Repair. BOINC restarted normally. Exited BOINC.

Ran 6.2.18 installer. It failed at the same point. I clicked OK to retry, it told me no can do, I clicked OK again, and the install proceeded normally.

So with error messages, I still managed to install the program. 6.2.18 is now up and running, succesfully migrating the old workunits and projects.

NOTE to all: I prefer to keep the Windows directory clean. This is an old laptop and storage space is at a premium. When I get a new laptop, it will get reformatted and get Linux installed once several important tax related matters are dealt with (actually want to dual boot Windows and Linux as the tax thing will continue)

No matter what I attempt after this, BOINC fails to install with the SAME error

Now BOINC on this computer is DIABLED, I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RUN FOR SEVERAL DAYS, OR UNTIL A SOLUTION IS FOUND.

A fix for this is already widely available. No need to shout. :-)
It's called the Microsoft Installer Cleanup utility. Download it. Run it. The former BOINC.msi file that is corrupt should be at the top of the list. Remove it. Exit the program. You notmay need to reboot the computer now.

Note: make sure you leave all other .msi files alone or you will have trouble uninstalling them in the future.

If your Windows version cannot find the old MSI file, you need to reinstall the old version of BOINC and choose to repair the installation. For this you need the old BOINC version installation file. If you no longer have it, download it from here (direct link).

Usually you can do the repair install, then immediately install the latest version of BOINC on top of the old version.

got the microsoft utility, it removed the Windows installer. It did not find a corrupt BOINC.msi, all versions are 6.2.18 here.

getting 5.10.45 to try again

Win XP SP2
BOINC 5.10.45

BOINC was running.

Downloaded BOINC 6.2.18 and started install.

BOINC was terminated.

Install failed at the point where Windows was attempting to read BOINC.MSI AFTER the settings page (program dir, data dir, protected mode, all users, etc. default options selected)

The error message is "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is not available - Press OK to try again, or enter a different path to a valid BOINC.MSI"

No matter what I attempt after this, BOINC fails to install with the SAME error

Now BOINC on this computer is DIABLED, I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RUN FOR SEVERAL DAYS, OR UNTIL A SOLUTION IS FOUND.

Downloaded Installations is CLEAN, only the current BOINC install is present. Old versions of BOINC are NOT here. Uninstalling BOINC is NOT an option as these old BOINC.MSI files are not present!!
