Hello,
I have similar experiences with Boinc 6.4.5, NVidia 8800GT/driver 180.48 and Vista/32 - not that worse, but similar pixelation everywhere.
It is always the result of a Seti calculation error - a reboot returns the system back to normal. Logoff/logon does not help.

The calculation error is often provoked by a return from hibernate status.
The computer does not recognize, that the CPU is idle, but the GPU is busy and decides to hibernate.

So far no other problems with the HW at my system.

Hello mitrichr,

just as a follow up: Please see the answer of ageless to my identical question in thread "2 boincmgr.exe processes after upgrade to 6.4.5 ..." (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=3425)

Boinc 6.4.5 seemed to change the startup entry for the boinc manager compared with older versions, but do no clean up the old startup entries for all users.
It is easy to fix.

At this moment, BOINC can only do either GPU or CPU tasks at the same time, for the same project. It can do a Seti GPU task and CPU tasks for another project at the same time, just not for the same project... or at least not for Seti. The reason behind this is that it needs a new scheduler to be able to send both executables and tasks to the computer. This will be built into BOINC in the future (think 6.8).

In the mean time you may look at this thread on the Seti forums for a work around.

Thanks, Ageless, for the response! So this might explain, why I was not able to see both (old and new) task running in parallel again. Happens just twice after pausing an seti.enhanced task.

However, what I believe is not correct, is the fact, that Seti.enhanced tasks are preferred to old-style tasks, which were started earlier.
I have a Dual-Core CPU and configured 50% CPU usage (== 1CPU) - I expect only one boinc task at a time running. And older tasks should finish before the new tasks starts - no matter if old or new style (CUPA) tasks.

But no worries, the astropulse task is finished and I got only seti.enh. tasks.

However, Video/TV display and Gaming is severly impacted now (Option "calculate, when computer is in use" is on - I might have to turn it off. I did not had to do that before).

Best regards, Edgar

Hello,
I have the experience, that the new seti-enhanced tasks (running on NVidia) suppress old fashioned tasks, running only on the CPU.
Sample: a seti-astropulse task is running for 35h. An hour before it finishes boinc loads new tasks from the web (setiathome enhanced 6.05). One of these new tasks immediately starts to run, the old astropulse task is suppressed and waits.
Manually delaying/stopping the new task brings astropulse back in the foreground and then it finishes successfull.

Under certain conditions, not reliable reproducable, both tasks (old and new) were running at the same time (although according to the configuration only 1 of 2 CPUs is dedicated to boinc). But usually only one task is running at the same time.

Quite strang behavior! Anyway, I think, tasks should execute in order of their arrival or their expiration time.

Delete the entry in the Startup folder.
BOINC Manager is run from the registry since 6.4.5

Thanks! It worked as you described it.
I did not read the the "autoruns" output carefully enough.

Hello,

I upgraded today Boinc from 6.2... to 6.4.5. (I just installed the new over the old version)
The upgrade was done as user "Administrator". Boinc runs as process, not as service.
Everything works as "Administrator" (3 processes: boinc/boincmgr/boinctray.exe)

However, when logged in as another user (not switching users! A User with limited permissions) I get 2 boinc icons in the systray and 2 boincmgr.exe processes in the task manager. (altogether 4 procs: boinc/boincmgr/boincmgr/boinctray.exe - all started by the second /actual user)
However, only one client (seti..) is running.

How can that be corrected? Autostart folder contains only 1 Boincmanager entry. Sysinternals/Autoruns shows also only 1 entry for boincmgr.exe.

The system is Vista/32bit Ultimate.

Second: Can the automatic usage of Cupa/NVidia GPU suppressed?

Best regards,
Edgar

I had no problems upgrading from 6.2.14 to 6.2.18 (WinXP 32) although the process was a little bit annoying.

Why?
Some times ago I upgraded from 5.10.45 (? I forgot...) to 6.2.14 and got the data (of climaprediction = 1,9GB) moved from the programm directory to the user data directory. It took quite some time.

When I upgraded from 6.2.14 to 6.2.18 I uninstalled .14 first, which moved all the data back from the user data to the programm folder.
Installing 6.2.18 moved it again to the user data folder.

I think, there should be either an option in "Uninstall" to skip that step or the readme should say, that you can safely upgrade over an installed Boinc version. (I was not able to find such a note...)

BTW: Upgrading from v5 to v6 did not reuse the options of v5. Boinc started to use 100% of a dualcore CPU (=2) and not 1 of 2 available CPUs, as configured in v5.

Anyway, impressive program.
