As I unfortunately cannot edit my original post, I have to add a note here with something I omitted from it:
After hitting ctrl-alt-del, you have to hit "cancel" on the next screen to get back into the Windows session.

Post:
Hello all- This may be a Windows issue, but, as you can imagine, I can't get anywhere in the chaos of Windows user forums, nor with Microsoft.
Beginning on a new machine at the beginning of July, once the screensaver is invoked, the only way I can resume my Windows session is to hit control-alt-delete. Simply hitting a key or moving the mouse will not bring the computer out of the screensaver mode. It does stop my SETI screensaver, but the BOINC standby one takes its place. (Please let me know if I could phrase that better and I will edit this post accordingly.)
This was not occurring on my previous machine, which croaked a week before I started using the new one. I presume the Windows build on the new machine was the same as on the old once it connected and updated itself, but I can't say for sure.
I have seen some threads on various forums describing similar behavior, but most or all seem to relate to some Windows photo (slide show?) screensaver function that I assume does not apply here as I have never used any such feature.
To the best of my knowledge, all my drivers are up to date.
Anyone have any ideas what this could be, or where I might look for an answer?
Thanks in advance.
Eric

3) Message boards : Questions and problems : Boinc screensaver & Creators Update (Microsoft, Win10) (Message 77405)
Posted 17 Apr 2017 by Profile Eric Martinson
Post:
Thank you CV and Ageless. I had the same problem as CV, apparently caused by the "Creators" update: BOINC would try to start, and be killed after an instant. Same behavior in screensaver preview mode.
Fixed problem by reverting to previous build of Windows 10:
PC settings > Update and security > Recovery > Go back to an earlier build
Windows is now prompting me to update again; haven't yet investigated how to suspend that behavior.

4) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC 7.4.27 install problem (Message 57899)
Posted 19 Nov 2014 by Profile Eric Martinson
Post:
I got a similar error today installing the VirtualBox / BOINC combo (for Windows 64-bit: BOINC 7.4.27, VirtualBox 4.3.12).
During the VirtualBox install routine, the install confirmation prompt came up repeatedly--maybe three times. Then this error came up: "The installation of Oracle VM VirtualBox 4.3.12 (x64) appears to have failed. Do you want to continue the installation?"
I chose yes, after which BOINC appears to have installed successfully.
No problem yet for me; I suspect I don't need VirtualBox for SETI@Home--my one project--but wanted to drop the FYI here.
Screenshot of error message below.
