Optimal nvidia settings for CUDA
(Message 25521)
Posted 18 Jun 2009 by Paul DT Scully Post: Does anyone know if there is any Optimal setting for Nvidia GPU's... I have noticed that if I change certain nvidia settings, there is a Temp change in the GPU's...so I am wondering if there is a optimal CUDA setting...so I can get the best from my GPU/CUDA device... |

(Message 23893)
Posted 24 Mar 2009 by Paul DT Scully Post: I just noticed something strange...I was checking out the WCG website, a noticed that I had 301,114 credits, but when I looked at Boinc I only have 43,016 credits. Something has gone wrong somewhere...I just need to know where & how to fix it. |

My Wish List - 2
(Message 23487)
Posted 6 Mar 2009 by Paul DT Scully Post: Work Unit Count: Here's a simple idea. Okay, as everyone already knows, under the Projects tab, these are the normal fields/coloum headings: Project, Account, Team, Work done, Avg. work done, Resource share, status, now here my idea for a new heading...Work Unit/s Count Now lets say you have 23 SETI WU's, and are currently running 4 WU's, then under this field you would see 4/23. It would be nice to be able to look at projects, and see how many WU's I have and how many are running. If I had a project like SETI, where no WU's are running then 0/23 could be displayed instead. As I am attached to 10 projects, and as sometimes I have an endless amount WU's displayed under Tasks, it would be nice just to be able to what I have, and what is running. I know I can sort them Status, but does not say how many WU's I have. |

My Wish List - 2
(Message 23288)
Posted 24 Feb 2009 by Paul DT Scully Post: Hi. I like this option combined with the option of "run until completion". I think for us with laptops with Dual Core, we need an option to select 1 task, and tell BOINC to run it ON THIS CORE until completion. This way, I still have the other core available to switch among the other projects I have. I think this would be a good idea, as I have 2 GPU's and run 2 CUDA projects, SETI & GPUGrid. So to be able to allocate a project to 1 GPU if needed, or even permanantly. And as I too run ClimatePredictor, I would like the option to run on 1 CPU core 24/7. But this would of course have to be linked to the Schedueler. |

My Wish List - 2
(Message 22932)
Posted 6 Feb 2009 by Paul DT Scully Post: Okay, I have another one... Switching between applications; is there a minumum time that cause Boinc to ignore this? For example, I had a CPU based WU with only 36 seconds (99.770%) until completion, because Boinc switched to a new Application. And when the WU resumed it took approximately that amount of time to complete. Would it not be better if Boinc were to ignore the Switch over, until after such a WU was finished. 1. Any WU with less than 5-10 minutes until completion or 2. 5-10% of the Switch over time. Either of the above would be suitable. In the past I have had dozens of WU's like this, waiting to resume. |

Posted 6 Feb 2009 by Paul DT Scully Post: Here is my request....... Under Tasks, Boinc displays CPU Time...and because of CUDA projects would it be possible to display both GPU Time and total Elapsed Time? I know that not everyone uses CUDA, so maybe these would only be displayed if Boinc detected a CUDA compatible GPU. |

Posted 29 Jan 2009 by Paul DT Scully Post: 29/01/2009 17:08:36||CUDA device: GeForce 8800 GT (512MB, est. 60GFLOPS) 29/01/2009 17:08:52|climateprediction.net|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. After having installed 6.6.3 yesterday, everything seem to be more settled now. Admittedly I could not run 6.6.2 for what ever the reason was. I also like two of the more noticeable changes to Boinc, those being; 1. When Boinc reports the CUDA device, not only does it say what card I have (GeForce 8800 GT), but now it displays GPU memory (512MB) & my GPU's estimated processing power (est. 60GFLOPS). 2. I also like the way Boinc reports projects communications, (see above), and when there are no WU's available, it tells you the there are no "job available". |

(Message 22727)
Posted 28 Jan 2009 by Paul DT Scully Post: I have installed 6.6.2 about half a dozen of time, from 6.6.0. But every time it does not seem to run correctly. Not all projects are displayed in Tasks tab (see example enclosed),and those that are don't show that they are running; Projects & Messages tabs nothing is displayed. I have a DELL XPS 420 with: CPU: Q6600 @ 2.40GHz Ram: 4GB GPU: 8800GT OS: Win Vista Ultimate 64bit SP1 Have tried installing under both nvidia 180.48 & 181.20 64bit drivers. This is the first version that I have been unable to use. Does anyone have a idea what my problem is? |

(Message 22370)
Posted 10 Jan 2009 by Paul DT Scully Post: I too am experiencing this. Ever since Seti & Beta(cuda) , was lanuched I have failed alot of GPUGrid WU becuase Seti would not allow GPUGrid to run. They will both seti's will let each other run, but not GPUGrid. GPUGrid has an high resource allocation, but that does not help. And the Seti WU's have a longer deadline than GPUGrid. |

Boinc client with affinity automatically set for WU's
(Message 21791)
Posted 14 Dec 2008 by Paul DT Scully Post: Okay benefits for me with affinity; if I have 3 WU running on my quad core with affinity, when one WU finishes, the next WU would normally start on the 4th core. I guess I prefer my cores to have rest/cool down breaks. Im running both GPUGrid & the "Seti Beta Cuda". Currently I am running 3 CPU WU & 1 GPU/Cuda WU, and as the latter never uses the whole CPU it would be nice if each WU had a dedicated core to run on. In total I have 6 projects, and I always thought that it was better the each core crunched only 1 WU each, not all 4 cores crunching parts of each of the 4 WU running. Also it would make more sense that if a user only want 3 of their cores to be used by Boinc, that only 3 cores are used, because at present, it will still use 4 cores (75% of each core), even if you choose 3 cores. |

Posted 13 Dec 2008 by Paul DT Scully Post: I was wondering if there is a reason why the BOINC Team have not put CPU/GPU affinity into BOINC? Crunch3r could do it in in his last optimised client, so why can't the Bonic Team. |

Posted 13 Dec 2008 by Paul DT Scully Post: I agree with you that using affinity is better. I have experienced Crunch3r's affinity optimisation at work...so I don't understand why the Boinc team can't get it to work? It would be an even more benefit now with cuda GPU projects. |

Keeping team ownership safe
(Message 20526)
Posted 27 Sep 2008 by Paul DT Scully Post: The problem with all three suggestions is that the team founder has already been taken over by the other person, who can still do all those things. I know that...I am just thinking it would good to stop it happening again in the future. And of course, when the project administrators like yourself have...made sure all the team ownerships have been reset to how they should be, with the correct founders. |
