1) Message boards : API : Control CPU/GPU from Python
Message 85398 Posted 23 Mar 2018 by Scalextrix |
Hi, I crunch BOINC work on solar power. I have an API interface with my solar generation that lets me poll the current amount of energy generated, I would like to control the BOINC CPU% and suspend the GPU based on how much energy Im farming, but I dont see any boinccmd options or ccconfig.xml options to do this. Any ideas if there is a method to get that level of control? Thanks. |

Hi so have a clean install of headless Raspian and added boinc-client, added my account manager (BAM) and all the projects are there, including Word Community Grid. But no tasks...? I cant see a boinccmd for the Event Log, how do I see whats occuring? Thanks. |

Im part of Gridcoin team and Im sad to read how you feel about it. I have been contributing to BOINC for about 10 years, and been on team Gridcoin for over 1 year. For most of that 10 years I was not in a team, and rarely reviewed my stats. Stats/teams may drive some, but Im purely altruistic, like many folks, first and foremost Im doing it for the benefit to science. All Gridcoin lets me do is offset my cost of electricity somewhat, so that running BOINC becomes a slightly less expensive hobby. I can actually afford to contribute more time to BOINC now and am producing more because of it. You say 'Why should I spend hundreds of dollars for electricity each month on top of the thousands I spend building my farm, when I get no benefit from it?', but Gridcoin doesnt in any way reduce the amount of contribution you make, nor should it reduce any of the satisfaction you gain from volunteering your compute resources. No team production can make your huge individual contribution to Collatz appear diminished, why measure your personal contribution against a whole team. In terms of stats, the Gridcoin Magnitude system is the most fair I have seen, it accurately measures the % contribution that I make across all my projects (regardless of project RAC inconsistency, NCI, GPUs or ASICs) and fairly says what % I contributed versus others. I dont really care about stats, but there you have it. Its a sad fact that BOINC participation is reducing over time, but Gridcoin is introducing a whole new demographic to the idea of BOINC. The amount of people I communcate with who are amazed BOINC even exists, that only found out about it because of Gridcoin, makes Gridcoin valuable to BOINC for its marketing power alone. Will some of those people give up, of course (that happens to BOINC anyway), but some will stay. Im not seeking to convince you, just telling it how I see it. I wish you (and anyone else who may read this), many happy years of BOINC contribution. |

CE say you can use the standard BOINC version if you want to run projects outside of their control, which is what Im trying to do. CE say you must attach to their specific AM at 'chartityengine.com', this worked on an older version of BOINC but it wont on 7.6.6, I may have to downgrade BOINC to get it to work I suppose. But surely you should be able to connect BOINC to any AM URL you like, not just BAM! and GridRepublic? |

Hi, Im on BOINC 7.6.6 x64. Im trying to join Charity Engine. To do this you must attach to the Account Manager 'charityengine.com'. However when I go to that add account amanger page, there is only BAM! and GridRepubic listed, if you over-type the URL with charityengine.com it still tries to add you to either BAM! or GridRepublic, whichever is highlighted. 9) Message boards : BOINC Manager : Feature Request; improved scheduling
Message 60339 Posted 16 Feb 2015 by Scalextrix |
Hi, sorry to start a new thread but the existing one seemed to be closed. I really would like to see better scheduling preferences for BOINC Manager. Many people have different electricity costs based on the time of day, some locations get cheap overnight electricity when there is a surplus, or in my case I have a solar array that provides significant electricity savings/carbon reduction in day time. Ideally the CPU & GPU would be able to be set on a schedule based on the number of cores, so for me at night I want 1 CPU core and no GPUs, in the morning and evening all CPU cores, and in the daytime (10-2) all CPU cores and all GPUs. Running 24/7 at full tilt would cost me ~ £500 per year and is a drain on natural resources. If we could have scheduling I could probably reduce that by at least a factor of 4 (overnight power consumption would move from ~500W to ~100W), which for me = affordable/green. If I had the brains, I would do it myself, but I dont, thats life! |

Found the answer: http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/concepts_micro_instances.html#available-cpu-resources-during-spikes Im using the free tier which is a micro instance so it is AWS limiting the CPU. |

OK I have another question, I got my AWS machine crunching with /var/lib/boinc-client boinccmd --set_run_mode always but after a couple of hours CPU usage went from 100% to 10%. Is anyone aware if AWS are limiting the usage on their end or is there another lever I need to pull to get it running 100% always? |

thanks guys your details really helped me. in the end figuring out what the IP address and password was, was just too complicated for me. But based on the instructions it seemed easier for a novice to do: cd /var/lib/boinc-client then: boinccmd --join_acct_mgr {URL} {name} {password} Im now on BAM, thanks so much again. |

Thanks Ill try that soon, I suspected it was quite a basic error on my part. Im hoping once I have the BAM control, I wont actually need to repote control the server as it only has 1 virtual cpu. |

Hi, so as ever Im having ideas well beyond my capability. Amazon Web Services allows 1 year of free server time so I decided to try and setup an Ubuntu server running BOINC in a headless mode. I have created the server and installed BOINC, however remote controlling it from the Linux command (via SSH) is causing me real issues because of my lack of experience. Im trying to run: boinccmd [hostname] [passwd] join_acct_mgr {URL} {name} {passwd} I keep getting: Authorization failure -155 what is the [hostname], what is the [passwd] ?? Im guessing [hostname] could either be 'ubuntu@ip-172-xxx-xxx-xxx' or it could be 'localhost' I have no idea what the [password] might be, I mayhave changed it to 'Ubuntu', but that doesnt seem to work either. Perhaps the syntax I have is wrong, should it be: boinccmd hostname [hostname] etc.? thanks. |
