All the admins said was "project will be offline from 02 June" and not when it'll be back. Connect to server fails with "cannot open logfile" so...I'd imagine they are significantly upgrading.... I haven't had any problems with DNETC since about 2030 UTC yesterday (4 June)...

48) Message boards : Questions and problems : Detaching from a project Message 24066 Posted 1 Apr 2009 by ritterm	If you want to detach from some projects now then just do it. If you want to reattach to them later then all you need to do is use the same email address you've used at your other projects. If you change your email address at the projects you stay attached to between detaching and reattaching the other projects then use your new email when you reattach. Thanks, Dagorath, that's good news. I was hoping it was that easy, but didn't want to take any chances.

Hmmm, that could present a problem...One project I'm considering detaching from may very well be the first one I started crunching. I'll have to see if I can verify that. Thanks!

Are there any drawbacks to detaching from a project if I might want to crunch it again? I guess I'm worried about a split CPID or host (if there is such a thing?). But of course -- thanks, Dagorath. After installing that library my host now seems quite happy crunching QMC.

Here's a stderr output that's typical for the WUs run by this host: <core_client_version>6.2.12</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> process exited with code 127 (0x7f, -129) </message> <stderr_txt> Amolqc-preRC1-501: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory </stderr_txt> ]]> My tiny Linux brain tells me that I must not have a certain shared library loaded. If that's right, how do I go about fixing that?
53) Message boards : Questions and problems : Output Files Absent Error Message 23068 Posted 12 Feb 2009 by ritterm	I'm having this same error running QMC@Home on one of my four hosts. I didn't get much of a response on the QMC board so I thought I'd go here next. The problem child is a stock P4 running Ubuntu 8.10 and BOINC 6.2.12 (that's what came with the Ubuntu distro and not being Linux savvy I'm hesitant to update using the Berkely installer). Other than me trying to slowly learn something about Linux this is pretty much a BOINC-only machine. It doesn't get a lot of attention, but it has no problems running several other projects. My other are hosts are Wintel boxes, again, with no QMC problems that I know of. I think everyone of the QMC WUs it's attempted to crunch crashed immediately with an error similar to this one: 2/10/2009 9:01:53 PM\|QMC@HOME\|Starting two_bench15_s22-ecp2-TZmf.32425_2 2/10/2009 9:01:53 PM\|QMC@HOME\|Starting task two_bench15_s22-ecp2-TZmf.32425_2 using Amolqc-preRC1 version 501 2/10/2009 9:01:54 PM\|QMC@HOME\|Computation for task two_bench15_s22-ecp2-TZmf.32425_2 finished 2/10/2009 9:01:54 PM\|QMC@HOME\|Output file two_bench15_s22-ecp2-TZmf.32425_2_0 for task two_bench15_s22-ecp2-TZmf.32425_2 absent 2/10/2009 9:01:54 PM\|QMC@HOME\|Output file two_bench15_s22-ecp2-TZmf.32425_2_1 for task two_bench15_s22-ecp2-TZmf.32425_2 absent I've tried resetting the project a couple of times, but that hasn't helped. I'm trying the install on a ThinkPad with Hardy Heron (8.04.1) and find that it does not install cleanly if BOINC has not been on the machine before. Your output shows BOINC 6.2.12, while I seem to be getting 5.10.45-1ubuntu1. I wonder if there are different versions of the BOINC packages for different versions of Ubuntu. That could very well be, Eric. I'm running 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) and it pulled BOINC version 6.2.12 from the repo. That seems a little odd to me, though, since that was a pre-release version.

And chkconfig is also Red Hat specific. I've commented out that line in the instructions. Once we know what works on Debian based systems, I (or someone else) can change it to reflect the Debian way. From a newbie's perspective, I think it might be a good idea to add a step or comment in the "Basic Installation" part of the instructions indicating that the manager can be started from Applications -> System Tools -> BOINC Manager.

I think I know how to do this on Ubuntu but I've not yet tested it. If there is a 'boinc' script in /etc/init.d then you should be able to turn it on with the command update-rc.d boinc defaults (You'll have to run that command as root or via sudo.) Then the client core should start as a daemon at the next reboot. There is a "boinc-client" script in /etc/init.d. When I run the update command as you suggest, I get the following output: ritterm@linuxbox:/etc/init.d$ update-rc.d boinc-client defaults System startup links for /etc/init.d/boinc-client already exist. ritterm@linuxbox:/etc/init.d$ Being new to Linux/Ubuntu I can't be sure, but it looks to me like installing from the repo sets the client up to run as a daemon at boot time. I don't think it's necessary to do anything else. Everything seems to be running okay for me now: the client starts at boot, I'm crunching WUs, and the manager is functioning. BOINC life is good... :-)

After starting the managerI was able to attach to all my projects. I still don't know how to start the client as a daemon to run at system boot.

I can't start the daemom manually (/sbin/service) or set it to run at boot time (/sbin/chkconfig). Neither command is in the /sbin directory.

Unfortunately, I'm having trouble installing and running the BOINC client and manager. I'm following the instructions given at the BOINC website to do the install from the Ubuntu repository, but it's not successful. I used the synaptic package manager to remove previous installations and even tried the install using synaptic. I realize that this may be an Ubuntu issue since I'm using the repository install, but I'm hoping I can get some help here. Thanks for any ideas. MarkR
