Well as long as it isn't going to stop other projects from running and thereby overshooting their time limits I'm willing...

I understand exactly how you feel. I did not experience this during the time I was active on the project.

I'm reluctant to try this yet as ritterm's post above indicates there could be a problem with it.

I wouldn't be afraid to try it. I haven't run the project in a few weeks (a personal choice not driven by the project's behavior), but believed at the time of my post that the project was working as designed. I didn't mean to imply that there was any problem with it.

Users do need to be aware that it's a project in the early stages and doesn't behave like any other BOINC project -- tasks run in strange ways, results status can be very confusing, and it can look like you're not getting credit for work done even though you are. I would encourage you and others to read through the forums to get an idea of how it behaves and then give it a try.

Happy crunching,

MarkR

Also, volunteers should be aware that when a VOLPEX task is "running", it is often in "sleep mode" and isn't using a CPU to do work. Unfortunately, with the current application, this idle CPU is not available for other projects. For more information on this, see the thread Idle CPU While VOLPEX Runs.

Cheers,

MarkR

Newcomers take note... This project isn't going to look like your typical BOINC project, at least not when it comes to the status of results. Read the post "How VolPEx is different from other volunteer computing projects" to get some indication.

Does anyone know anything about the new and, sometimes, very long WU's the project is putting out now? The ones I'm running are non-cpu intensive, but they sure are RAM intensive -- I've seen them use as much as 1GB RAM. I'd like to find out more, but they don't have their own forum and I get lost trying to translate from German in the SETI.G and P3D forums.

Looks like they're back...

7/11/2012 3:34:14 PM | Rioja Science | update requested by user
7/11/2012 3:34:18 PM | Rioja Science | Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
7/11/2012 3:34:18 PM | Rioja Science | Reporting 2 completed tasks, requesting new tasks for CPU
7/11/2012 3:34:21 PM | Rioja Science | Scheduler request completed: got 1 new tasks

I've gotten 14 tasks across 4 hosts since ~ 1810 UTC. Two have completed and validated and two are pending. Most returned tasks that were "overdue" have validate errors, but some are pending or have received credit.

There seems to be plenty of work available (at the time of this post ~182K tasks ready to send and decreasing), but I keep getting the following messages from the project:

6/20/2012 8:00:12 AM Rioja Science Message from server: No tasks sent
6/20/2012 8:00:12 AM Rioja Science Message from server: Tasks are committed to other platforms

This happens intermittently between periods of time that my hosts (all Windows) get work without any problems.

Tasks are running in high priority mode on my Win32 machine even though they have plenty of time to finish well before their deadline. 40-minute tasks with a week deadline shouldn't do this, obviously.

Do you have outstanding work from other projects in your queue that could cause the BOINC manager to think everything won't finish on time?

Anyone know what is happening at CAS@home?

There's a news item at BOINCstats...

Due to the hardware failure to the current CAS@home server, we are scheduling a downtime(a week by estimation) starting from Tue Jun 12 UTC 00:00:00 CST 2012 to set up a new server to replace the current server! In the meanwhile, we need to shut down the whole project and the website before the new server can come into service. Sorry for the inconvenience!
And also appologies to the website unavailibility over the past weekend!

@Felix:

Can you give us an update on the status of the project? I've been getting this for the past several days...

6/5/2012 10:44:03 AM Rioja Science Message from server: Project is temporarily shut down for maintenance

Hi all,

Due to external issues, we are not able to open the website forum so far. It will be available within one month.

Like Ritterm said, now are having real work from the chemistry department, the workunits last between two and three hours.

We are doing our best to fix problems such as the progress bar, Windows 7 64bits bugs, checkpoint and so on.

Last week we released the MacOs-Intel platform and the next week the application over Nvidia-Cuda.

We have a lot of work but because of the lack of human resources availability, we can´t be as efficient as we would like.

Please, be patient, don´t close the forum thread.

Thanks, the obtained results are so valuable for us.
Best Regards

Thanks for the feedback, Felix. I don't speak for all of crunchers, of course, but I'm sure that many of us understand the problems that can arise from limited resources, both human and monetary.

Communication with volunteers is one of the most important things a project admin can do, so please keep us updated as best you can when there's news, changes, problems, etc.

Regards,

MarkR

The latest batch of work that I've got on my hosts seems to be never-ending...

Okay, so maybe I should have been more patient. Four of these have since finished -- in about 2.5 hours on my faster hosts. Quite a change from the 60 second tasks in earlier batches. "Real" work perhaps? ;-)

Sadly still no message boards :(
...
p.s. Sorry for cluttering up the BOINC dev boards :)

My apologies for continuing to post here, but I feel I have no choice... The latest batch of work that I've got on my hosts seems to be never-ending. Tasks have been running for between 40-90 minutes and most show 100% progress, although one (a WinXP machine) shows 0% progress. All triqct processes are running and using a full core.

As stats aren't being exported it would be quite hard for any stats site to import them :)

Yeah, I checked their stats directory after I posted yesterday and found it quite empty...<blush>

Anyway, we shouldn't be cluttering up the BOINC forums with project-specific stuff - Let's hope the project opens it's forums soon :)

I agree, wholeheartedly... :-)

I´ll talk to the Web Page´s Administrator to try to release the forum...

Yes, please! It would be very helpful if the project forum was active. Thanks!

Oh...And please state that it's okay to import and publish project statistics. Some stats site admins won't do that without express permission. :-)

Cheers,

MarkR

It would appear GPUgrid has gone offline. I can't get scheduler requests, uploads or the web site to come up. Tried a couple of machines and an iPad.

Their web site is back and no mention of going off...

No mention? ;-)

Any news on EDGeS? I've been getting "server can't open database" and "feeder not running" messages for at least 2 days.
