@Jord: I'm sure you'd pass along any news you had, but would it be reasonable to ask your contacts at CPDN for an update?

...running VM jobs are not being displayed in the VBox manager as they are in my Win10 hosts.

From a similar thread in a project forum, another user noted:

BOINC in Linux uses separate account, so you need to run VboxManager under "boinc" username.
It's kinda like
$ sudo su -s /bin/sh -c VirtualBox boinc

That does indeed fix the issue with the VBox manager; however, it doesn't seem to help with the missing graphics and VM console features in the BOINC manager.

I just converted one of my hosts to Mint 18 and am running VM tasks on a Linux host for the first time. I found it easy to install VBox 5.1.10 and the extension pack, and have successfully completed several (LHC Theory) tasks with no apparent problem.

It's not a big deal (I don't think) but running VM jobs are not being displayed in the VBox manager as they are in my Win10 hosts. I've also noticed that when a VM job is selected on the "Tasks" tab of the BOINC manager (7.6.31), the "Show Graphics" button is grayed out and the "Show VM Console" is not listed on the lefthand side under "Commands".

I don't recall having to do anything under Windows for the VBox install and am wondering if there's another step or if there's a problem somewhere.

Thanks for any advice.

Cheers

Yes, indeed! I see that I traded posts with Jord 8 years ago when I was a young lad -- in BOINC years! Not sure how much I've learned since then, but he's been a big help!

My question is can I set up my same account also on this second computer and run the same project as on the first computer?...Can I have the second computer do sperate work from the first computer...?

Yes to both! You can run any mix of projects on each computer (as long as that computer meets any specific hardware or operating system requirements imposed by the project's applications).

CPDN seems to be making progress. I can access my account info, server status page, forums, etc., and reported a couple of recently completed tasks. However, I don't see any official looking announcement in the forum.

Forgive me for "re-opening" a closed thread, but I can't help given it one more try... :-)

I've tried several times to contact project admins by private message and email and have gotten no response. I just wanted to make one more appeal to anybody who might be familiar with the status of this project or knows who can provide some feedback on the following:

1) Is the current work doing anything other than testing the servers and associated processes?
2) When might the forum be activated?
3) When might the project move into production status?
4) When might user statistics be made available to aggregation sites like BOINCstats and Free-DC?

Cheers,

MarkR

Cosmology@home seems to be offline and the Home Page link now leads to an unrelated website. It appears their website may have been hijacked...

I think their domain name has expired.

Yeah, I've already done that... Admins at Atlas and T4T referred me to a director at LHCb, but PMs to that person have gone unanswered. However, I did get an email address and might try that next.

The Beauty@LHC project forum isn't active and my PMs to admins (or those I think are or might be) have gone unanswered. So, I hope that it's okay to start a thread here to ask if anyone knows about the following:

1) Is the current work doing anything other than testing the servers and associated processes?

2) When might the forum be activated?

3) When might the project move into production status?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Anyone knows where to get feedback?

Some people have gotten feedback by email from the project scientist/admin. Go to the new project home page and click "Contact" at the bottom right.

I can't find a way to stop BOINC manager checking...

You could suspend the project or manually suspend network communication (but that would affect all projects). There's also a way to block communication by adding a line to the Windows hosts file, but I'm not sure what the correct host name would be.

Thanks for the updates, Mike. I can get to climateprediction.net but am now getting "403 Forbidden" trying to get anywhere on climateapps2. Is that DNS related? (No sarcasm intended...I honestly don't know).

Yes, doesn't look like it stayed up for very long. I'm not altogether surprised, they had to unexpectedly move everything onto a brand-new server because the original one was falling to pieces. The new configuration probably isn't quite right yet (CPDN has a lot of customisations on top of the standard version of Boinc). I have to confess, I will be pleased when everything is up again because I only have one model remaining. My money would be on tomorrow.

Thanks, Mike.

I'm sure it hasn't been easy for them and hopefully some stability and reliability will be reached soon. I'll keep crunching my models and take another dose of patience pills... ;-)

161 Hours - My efforts on other stuff is apparently WASTED
here... I'll tuff it out 'til my Deadline...

Patience, patience... ;-) It will probably finish and not be cancelled by the server, even if it goes beyond the deadline. I've run several that took well over 100 hours to complete. One went several hours past the deadline and eventually completed/reported/validated just fine.

As noted elsewhere, you can't rely on the fraction completed shown in the BOINC manager. I saw some tasks bounce all over the place and then, all of a sudden, complete. I don't think I ever saw one that went beyond 60%.

Cheers,

MarkR

So you will see that we have the majority of services restored now!

Unfortunately, I cannot see that... :-( I don't seem to be able to access any parts of the site that I used to be able to access: climateprediction.net, my account page, the forums, etc. The only response I get in the BOINC manager to update requests is:

8/8/2013 2:27:45 PM update requested by user
8/8/2013 2:27:46 PM Fetching scheduler list
8/8/2013 2:28:11 PM Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
8/8/2013 2:28:13 PM Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

This is the same on all hosts running on three different networks.

Are these parts of the project that still aren't back? Did something else change that I might have missed? Or, could it be that there's so much traffic now no everybody is getting through?

At least the zip files are uploading properly...

They are? Lucky you... :-) I've been getting the dreaded "Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down" message for the last 48-hours plus. :-(

Collatz remains offline -- now through 9 days and two weekends. Has anyone made any contact with Slicker? I know it is a one person project and thus totally dependent on Slicker to maintain and communicate on the project, but he's been so solid over the years I'm wondering if perhaps something untoward has happened with him.

I knew that I had read something, somewhere about a possible extended Collatz outage, but it took me awhile to find it. There's a post by Slicker in the BOINCstats forum that might be pertinent:

Posted 2013-07-12 16:49:17

The server crashed this morning leaving the MySQL innodb tables in a corrupted state. The log files were also corrupted. Since MySQL can't even start, repair is out of the question. (Why can't it start and make the corrupted database unavailable so that one can drop it and then restore instead of wiping out the entire innodb installation and starting from scratch? Gotta love freeware.) The good news is that the database backups ran just a short while prior to the crash. A replacement server was purchased and already in the process of being configured so rather than restore to the existing [flaky] server, it will be restored to the new server. The bad news is that it will take a few days, and, if I can't get it all configured and up and running by Tuesday, Collatz may be down for another week or more due to other obligations.
