I restart from ./make_project but problem persists. Any help appreciated.

I am trying to set up a BOINC server. I downloaded the BOINC Virtual Machine (running Debian Linux) and set it as the server. I downloaded a standard BOINC client on my Windows machine (the host for the Debian VM).

As a start I have been trying to install the sample wrapper and worker applications. I compiled both apps under Windows and FTP'ed them to the Debian host. Then followed the instructions provided in http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/WrapperApp to the letter.

The problem is, when I attach to the project, the client says "project communication failed" followed by "Scheduler request failed: couldn't resolve host name"

At the beginning I thought this was a network problem, but using a single-job set up seems to enable the client and the server to communicate and the client downloads a program from the server (though it fails to create a process, but that is another story).

My questions are: Is there any other modification that should be done to the server or the client? I noticed that the single-job script adds assimilators and validators to the project. Should there be an assimilator and a validator for the wrapper-worker case too? If so, can I find it anywhere or should I write it myself?

Before the IP address of server changed, everything runs ok,the client manager can connect to the server,also download and upload workunits successfully.

However after I changed the IP address of server, client manager can't connect to server normally, the messages under message tab are as follows:

Sending scheduler request: Project initialization. Requesting 1 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks

After altering the IP address of server,I edit the file config.xml and remove the database tables such as app,app_version,platform,workunit,result and then run bin/xadd, bin/update_versions, bin/start,bin/status. After doing that,all the deamons can running well and there is no errrors.Now the project’s website is available for browsing .And there is no firewall.

I don't the reasons. Any idea is appreciated!

Hi, i am trying to create a grid computing system within an internal network using BOINC. I have setup the server on a virtual machine of debian 4.0 and the client running on windows xp pro. I also set up a test application on the server provided.

The problem i am having is that the project test is started and the client is connected however, the server is not giving work to the client i am getting the error "communication deferred" and it seems that there is no tasks given to the client. I have tried playing around with firewall setting and feel there may be a problem with ports.

Any help would be appreciated

It's no longer a separate SVN repo, it's been merged into the main BOINC SVN, as the "samples" subdirectory.

Some projects are even using interpreter programs within a wrapper. Basically you can use any program or script that you can start from the command line somehow.


Crunchers will be unhappy, if results run very long without having checkpoints and if programs do not pause when BOINC tells them to. Multithreaded applications can cause trouble as well, as those will usually affect other projects.

If you do not have any control over the source of the wrapped program (i.e. want to wrap a ready-made program), you will probably not be able to add those features, if the program doesn't come with them.


Basically they will still run - but the problem will be to find someone who wants to run them ;-)


p.s.: Programs that do not run in batch mode and insist in having a GUI will not be wrappable of course - but I guess that's understood. Same for programs that insist in beeing attached to a tty.

Can you download all files with a web browser or does it give you a 403 there too?

Make sure to use the same connection type for that test, i.e. if your BOINC uses a proxy, put the same proxy for the web browser.

Try the same with all firewalls (zone alarm, windows XP firewall, virus scanner firewall ...) disabled.

Some malware program detection might recognize the executable program download as a pattern of all those downloader virii.

Compare owner and linux access rights of your download directory files. If you added the binaries with FTP, the umask setting might lead to insufficient read permissions for the web user. If in doubt, just "chmod a+r *" in the download directory.
