81) Message boards : Questions and problems : Missed deadline
Message 64853 Posted 12 Oct 2015 by noderaser |
If you are still using the old master URL you need to remove and re-add the project. Also, if the tasks you are trying to upload are already removed from the website's list of tasks then just abort the tasks, they are of no use to the project any more. Shouldn't the BOINC manager request the new URL at some point, without needing to reset or detach the project? |
82) Message boards : The Lounge : supercomputing power from e-waste - feasible?
Message 64780 Posted 8 Oct 2015 by noderaser |
Another thought; if you were trying to assemble a cluster you would probably get more "bang" for your buck if you were to take some older machines and upgrade them with inexpensive GPUs. They even made some HD 3000/4000/5000 series GPUs on PCI and AGP; they might not be hot performers by today's standards, but they should still do better than many CPUs. |

I used to have a small cluster of machines (4-6, it varied a bit) when I was in my dorm room at college and therefore had "free" power... They were all "salvaged" from other people who were giving them up after upgrading, I even found one in the dumpster at the dorm. When I moved out of the dorms and into my own place, I had to stop that practice as my electric bill was running near a quarter of my rent at the time. I was never in the grain of the serious cluster crunchers, just trying to give what I could at the time... Many of them are assembling their clusters from slightly used machines, but if you go too "old" you fall below a FLOPs per watt number that some people think is not worth the money and effort. I've thought about adding a few machines back now that I'm on a more stable financial footing, currently I only have one machine (my DVR) that runs 24/7, the rest are only on while they're in use or for periods where I'm trying to meet a crunching goal. Personally, I'm of the opinion that "every machine is a good machine", and the "value" of having an older machine crunching is a relative thing to the person paying to keep it running. I have quite a collection of old computers (mostly Macs) that still get used every now and then for various purposes, and any that are BOINC capable still push in a few tasks every now and then. In the case of an organization where resources are an issue, you could certainly assemble an "ugly" cluster of donated or salvaged machines. However, I think that the challenge for such an organization would be keeping the lights on; it's easy to write grants to obtain equipment or to meet a particular goal, but basic utilities and operating costs is not a very sexy topic to a grant writer. I think MilkyWay is a good example of this, having lost their major NSF grant, they have taken to crowdfunding to keep things afloat. |

I think that my record as a cruncher is clear. I appreciate your efforts, but your record does raise the question--why did you stop crunching? |

Many manufacturers (Dell, HP) would use both AMD and Intel in the same mobile models and I guessed perhaps Microsoft was doing the same. With exception of the original Surface (which had an nVidia Tegra 3) the rest of the line-up has been Intel. Atom for Surface 2 & 3, and i3/i5/i7 for the Pro models. It looks like the 4th generation will be the same. There are only a few AMD tablets out there, seems they've been having some problems getting on the boat. But, that seems to be the case with a lot of their business lately, they don't seem to be as strong of a competitor with Intel as they once were. |

For reference, my CPDN shows 5.44 GB disk usage... Though I currently have 8 tasks in progress. |

It might also help, to tell us which projects you are using. Some projects keep files much longer than others, even if they're not needed for active tasks anymore. |
89) Message boards : Questions and problems : What constitutes as 'idle'?
Message 64436 Posted 22 Sep 2015 by noderaser |
BOINC's definition of idle after X minutes should be after the last keyboard/mouse activity. You can check the event log to see if the computer is in fact going to sleep or not when you close the lid, as there will be a log entry with a timestamp. You can change the behavior of your computer when you close the lid, under the Windows control panel it's in "Power Options". There should be a link in the left-hand column that says "Change what closing the lid does". However, as pointed out, running with the lid closed can block vents and provide an extra layer of "insulation" keeping the system from being able to radiate heat away from itself. If you want it to keep running, I would just set your display to turn off after a short interval (i.e., 10 minutes) and leave it open. I think you'll also find that BOINC won't really cause any performance issues unless you are using GPU computing while in use. The only time I pause BOINC CPU computation, is when I'm playing some (but not all) games that need heavy CPU load. |
90) Message boards : Projects : Could BOINC be used to crack famous codes?
Message 64375 Posted 19 Sep 2015 by noderaser |
Enigma works with a known algorithm and unknown variables, the project does a "brute force" using all possible key values through the algorithm. I'm not familiar with the examples you gave, but in order to crack a code without knowing part of the means of encoding it (the algorithm, a key, the deciphered message, etc) you would be looking at some kind of advanced experimental computing that probably would need nodes with a very fast connection between them. It might be something that quantum computing could tackle, but I don't see it coming to a BOINC project any time soon. |

Message 64272 Posted 15 Sep 2015 by noderaser |
BOINC's not available on any RISC (re ARM) versions of Windows leaving many (almost all?) Windows tablets out too and isn't supposed to run under emulation either. Maybe this has changed; that's why I started this topic again since it's been a year since the last post. Although Windows phones are still using ARM processors, I've noticed that the Windows tablet market has been shifting towards x86 processors such as the Intel Atom and there are more options with full-fledged i3/5/7 series ultra-mobile chips. Microsoft's own Surface was only an ARM for the first generation, with an Atom in the Surface 2 and 3. That movement will probably be "helped" along by Microsoft effectively mothballing Windows RT; they will offer an update for RT users with some features, but no actual upgrade path to Windows 10. |
92) Message boards : Questions and problems : Sound - Audio - Video issue with 7.x
Message 64271 Posted 15 Sep 2015 by noderaser |
I occasionally have problems with audio playback (iTunes) on my i7 laptop, but only when it's at "full burn" on the CPU. I have video issues on nearly all of my GPU computing rigs when they're running at a high utilization. But, those are resolved by pausing CPU and GPU computation, respectively. Is there a "runaway" process that's not following the request from BOINC to suspend? Take a look in the task manager when you've paused BOINC. |
93) Message boards : Questions and problems : Not requesting tasks: don't need (CPU: not highest priority project; Intel GPU: not highest priority project)
Message 64151 Posted 9 Sep 2015 by noderaser |
I was kind of getting the feeling that this has do with the "credit debt" situation and the calculations for a new host, as the client has not yet completed tasks for all projects. Unfortunately, that probably won't happen anytime soon because not all of the projects regularly have tasks available. I guess it's not the "end" of the world if it doesn't get many tasks due to the low runtime, but every little bit helps IMHO. The total project list for this host is: BURP - 5000 (75.06%) World Community Grid - 1000 (15.01%) climateprediction.net - 500 (7.51%) Milkyway@Home - 100 (1.50%) Asteroids@hoe - 50 (0.75%) Einstein@Home - 10 (0.15%) LHC@home 1.0 - 5 (0.08%) Moo! Wrapper - 1 (0.02%) WUProp@Home - 0 (0.00%) I personally have not encountered this condition on any of my other hosts over 10 or so years of BOINC, though I've seen a few mentions of it here and there on message boards. So, it's a new one for me... But the "situation" I'm in with Internet connectivity is a new one for me as well; I'm on a temporary work assignment, and I don't have any Internet in my room, only in the public club area. So, when the device is plugged in to charge at night it doesn't have any connectivity. Here's the uptime stats from BURP: Fraction of time BOINC is running 16.11% While BOINC is running, fraction of time computer has an Internet connection 13.14% While BOINC is running, fraction of time computing is allowed 70.49% While is BOINC running, fraction of time GPU computing is allowed 70.48% I have gotten some tasks completed, but the flow is still fairly erratic. I have my laptop here as well, it runs without incident--I just update it manually when I get on an Internet connection and tasks are uploaded/downloaded just fine. |
94) Message boards : The Lounge : Hello everyone! Brand new here!
Message 63958 Posted 31 Aug 2015 by noderaser |
Sure, we probably won't break any speed records, but if everyone (and every company, organization, etc.) volunteered just a little bit, a lot of these problems would be solved so much faster. That's my philosophy... Pretty much any computing device (even really old ones) can make a contribution, imagine the virtual supercomputer that could be assembled with all of the resources that are out there on the net today! Although there are a lot of people on the forums that get caught up in the competitive aspects of crunching, even one host has value. |
95) Message boards : Questions and problems : Please recommend (and where to find used?) a decent GPU based machine?
Message 63957 Posted 31 Aug 2015 by noderaser |
Depending on what machines you already have on hand, you'll probably get the most "bang for your buck" if you just add a GPU to an existing machine, unless you're in the market for a new system anyway. Which card is the "best" somewhat depends on the project you want to do GPU computing for, since they all use different software that uses different manufacturers and cards... differently. If you pick one project you want to optimize your crunching for, you can ask around at that project's forum for the best GPU for them. Tools like WUprop might give you some info to make an informed decision as well, though they can be somewhat difficult to read. Have you considered making a team for your company? That way, you could have both your employees and credit from "company" computers all contribute to a combined statistic, but still allow everyone individual control over their contributions. I was going to point you to the BOINC-wide teams site, but it appears that has been disabled due to spamming. At any rate, since your username seems to be against the forum rules here (but this has nothing to do with the projects, where you should be okay--lots of companies have user accounts and teams) I might recommend you rename it as a personal account since your username on this forum has no bearing on your computing or any of the projects. Hope I've provided some useful information, and hope that your experiences here won't dissuade you from contributing. Welcome aboard, and happy crunching! |
96) Message boards : Questions and problems : only 20 percent CPU?
Message 63956 Posted 31 Aug 2015 by noderaser |
Maybe everything is fine. Maybe that task manager tab is just a liar. The Windows 10 task manager seems to have some issues... The "Processes" tab is the kind of behavior I'd expect to see from previous versions of Windows where you had a "Show processes for all users" button, but that feature seems to be lacking. The "Details" tab seems to show all users by default, but it's not in a very pretty format, unless you're used to the old Windows XP task manager. |
97) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC not synching with BoincBAM
Message 63955 Posted 31 Aug 2015 by noderaser |
If you added your projects to BAM through the web interface, you'll also need to assign them to your host under the "Host list". You can simplify this for future hosts if you check the "Attach new host by default?" box on the "My projects" page. And, if you have multiple hosts and add a new project through BAM, you can use the "add/detach all hosts now" option on the same page. |
98) Message boards : Projects : Appeal to Project Managers
Message 63783 Posted 23 Aug 2015 by noderaser |
Are you looking for some good projects, or just making a general statement? I can always recommend BURP if you're willing to crunch for non-scientific projects; it's always in need of new crunchers and always seems to get overlooked. Work is not always consistent, it's dependent on user-submitted rendering sessions, but Janus has always been a responsive and hospitable admin. |

Did you try logging into one of the project websites to make sure you have the right password? You should be able to recover it from there if that's the issue. What is the actual status or message shown in BOINC Manager? It also helps if you tell us whether you're using the simple (shows some graphics) or "advanced" (mostly text) view. This forum is independent of the projects, so if you have to create an account to log in here, it doesn't mean anything is lost at the projects. You'll have to try logging in there. |
