WCG currently has an ARM/Android app for Outsmart Ebola Together, though I'm not sure it it's 32 or 64-bit.

@noderaser I am not currently using my big pc (it's not even at my house right now) but an older macbook which can hardly handle running BOINC in the background. Also the main idea is to have an independent system for BOINC projects.

Oh come on now, I've got a G4 PowerBook that still makes contributions, though not as many as it used to--mostly because I don't have the time to work on the hobby it's earmarked for anymore.

You've got to start somewhere.

Why not get started while running BOINC on the computer when you're using it?

What projects were you active at? Accounts are handled at each project, there is no universal "BOINC" account, although there are account managers that can handle adding new projects for you. If you were trying to log in to this site with your old details, it's probably because you never had need for this forum before. This is just a support forum, an account here has nothing to do with any of the projects or your BOINC Manager.

3) I did think most computers had a GPU (or a video card) installed, so is that a problem? The Samsung N220 had a video card installed.

If you have a display, there's a video card or chipset somewhere. Nearly all current CPUs have an integrated GPU, and most of them are capable of BOINC--but crunching on them will also increase your CPU temperature, so be sure and use Tthrottle to keep your shiny new computer from melting. Been there, done that.

The closest thing to the old "netbook" style that I've seen are the transformable tablets, otherwise you step up to like a 13" laptop. Tablets of that size (approx. 9-10") are almost exclusively powered by Atom processors.

Computing only when the screensaver is active isn't really an option since SETI Classic, the new options are to start computation X minutes after the user has stopped providing input to the computer, if you don't want to compute while the system is in use.

You could use an alternate manager like BOINCtasks, which lets you color code and sort messages by various flags. http://efmer.com/b/

Removing and then re-adding an account for a project in BOINC Manager will abort any tasks in progress, so use "No new work" and finish up any in progress tasks before doing that.

Are you trying to add a second project account to your current BOINC Manager, or do you want to run tasks for both accounts simultaneously? If the latter, then one way of doing it would be to use a virtual machine and install BOINC on the "guest" operating system. However, there will be a performance penalty for both instances of BOINC due to the overhead of running a virtual machine.

Also check in the BIOS/EFI to make sure that the integrated GPU isn't disabled when a card is installed. That's the default setting on most motherboards.

For some years now I have been running Wuprop@home which is a non cpu intensive (NCI) project and racked up over 1/2 million credit. It will run on virtually anything. I wish there was more NCI stuff.

Running WUprop without any other projects is pretty pointless, though... The purpose of the project is to collect data about how the other projects run on various hardware. Most other NCI apps require external hardware, like QCN and Radioactive@Home.

SETI is pretty much the only recourse for really old, slow, or weird machines.

The loss of SIMAP was a huge blow to those of us who insist on keeping archaic platforms (mostly PowerPC) running, though I can understand why projects are reluctant to support them when they submit a minimal portion of the returned work. Still, it's nice to have them doing something useful--although I don't run any of them 24/7. I only have one host (my DVR, an old-ish AMD Phenom X3 8400) that is a 24/7 cruncher, aside from my old phone (Samsung Galaxy S3) that is really a non-factor when it comes to power consumption.

CPU computing is a waste of time unless you are talking multi core i7 or Xeons.

I guess that depends on your goal; if you're talking about pure credit, then it may well be... But there are many projects that still don't have GPU apps.

Here's what other people are running on that chipset: http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/results/gpu.py?fabricant=INTEL&type=HD+Graphics&modele=HD+4600&tri=projet&sort=asc

I have that chipset in my i7 laptop, though I disabled it because it makes the CPU run too hot, and my tthrottle settings scale down my CPU too much.

Looks like a reboot solved the problem.

What's the #1 step in resolving a computer problem?

"Is the system powered on?"
"Is the system plugged in?"
"Have you rebooted the system?"

I think most of the rise in memory use, I will have to live with. However, the main problem seems to be with the Einstein Home Screensaver, as can be seen in this link - http://www.johnfairweather42.webspace.virginmedia.com/Einstein_ScreenSaver.jpg

Somehow it seems to have been corrupted, after I installed Windows 10, not sure why.

That happens a lot on my Windows 7 machine as well. It hasn't seemed to affect any of the results, however; they are still completed and validated without incident.

I created my BOINC-wide team back when you could still do it yourself, and I was getting messages from the various projects for a good week or more afterward.

I've been giving Windows 10 a spin on my laptop and a tablet, and unless they fix some of the functionality issues (settings that are in obscure places or nowhere to be found, such as "forgetting" a wireless network) I may go back to 7 on that. I'm also not very happy with it on my tablet either; I would liken 10 more to 7.5, in that it's in-between the traditional desktop setup and the full-screen tablet UI that was most of Windows 8. So, I may be going back to 8.1 on that.

I don't think the term "Luddite" is appropriate either; there are a number of us out there who use older technology on purpose because there's no compelling reason to pitch the money in for an upgrade. In some cases, the older stuff is even better.

Second, a case of O.C.D. was very severe. I just could never ever leave things alone and be satisfied. So I was told by my family and a shrink that I needed to quit.

I can understand that, the struggle is very real :P I'm sorry it had to come to that.

I've had similar problems using wireless mice with only the Windows-provided drivers, and not the factory ones.
80) Message boards : Questions and problems : How do I know if my GPU is being used?
Message 64854

You should be able to tell from the "tasks" tab whether your GPU is being used or not... Your task will say "Running (0.2 CPUs + 1 NVIDIA GPU)" or something similar. If you're not getting any tasks, that's when you need to look into things like driver versions and what have you... Not sure if you checked there or not, seems like the other suggestions may be a bit deeper than you needed at this point.

If you want to know about the exact GPU utilization percentage (like you would get in Task Manager for CPU) you'll have to use a third-party utility like GPU-Z. Not all projects will make maximum use of your GPU, like nearly all CPU applications do. One issue with GPU units, is keeping the I/O going between your GPU and storage, which for some projects and fast cards may require you to leave an entire CPU core open.
