41) Message boards : GPUs : What can I process with these cards? (8600 GTS / 8800 GT)
Message 74119 Posted 17 Nov 2016 by noderaser |
You can also check http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/results.py (WUprop) to see what projects other people are running on your same hardware and OS combination. |
42) Message boards : Questions and problems : Why isn't there a Chrome app for Boinc?
Message 72598 Posted 23 Sep 2016 by noderaser |
The Progress Through Processors Facebbok "app" doesn't actually do any computing, it's just a link with GridRepublic, one of the account managers. |
43) Message boards : Questions and problems : Can I run BOINC at work? How can I persuade my boss it's safe?
Message 71565 Posted 15 Aug 2016 by noderaser |
You can run BOINC on work or friends' computers, so long as you have their permission. As for how you'd convince someone that it's safe, that's outside of my area of expertise; I know that WCG has been hailed as a much more secure project than others because IBM has put in some of their expertise on the security component. It's secure enough that they run it on all their corporate machines. |
44) Message boards : Questions and problems : My BOINC client hacked?????

Are you using an account manager? |
45) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC on older computers?
Message 69607 Posted 15 May 2016 by noderaser |
Older and slower computers are absolutely usable, crunch on! One of the nice things about BOINC, is that it takes away the requirement to continually update hardware to move your project forward. Replacing hardware just to have latest and greatest is rather wasteful. As per the energy requirements, that's your contribution--if it's of a major concern to you, you don't have to run 24/7. Even contributions from your computer when you are using it/have it on would be appreciated. |
46) Message boards : Questions and problems : Resources not changing in any projects
Message 69606 Posted 15 May 2016 by noderaser |
WCG and BAM don't play well together, and will not synchronize resource share. You will have to go to the WCG website and change it manually. |

Steve Hawker* wrote:My point is that on WCG, crunching for one hour gets you one hour added to your total. This was true 10 years ago, is true now, will be true in 2026. Hours are the currency at WCG not BOINC credits However, newer machines with multiple cores will generate more computing hours per clock hour. Computing hours are how WCG's badges are awarded, but credit is still a factor, especially when comparing it to other BOINC projects. While there are a few who argue that everyone's contribution should be rewarded the same, it seems the majority of those who have voiced their opinion would rather see higher credit numbers be awarded to those who get more work done for the project. Ageless wrote: The original reason for this option was for hardware testers who due to their NDA were not allowed to show the hardware in combination with their account. Think about new GPUs being tested, or new CPUs. They'd still show up in the lists, but not against a specific person's account. This can still be a legitimate reason as I know at least one person who works at Intel and is using "company" hardware under development for BOINC, although they still have their hosts visible to the public. |
48) Message boards : Questions and problems : computer fan runs almost all of the time
Message 69392 Posted 3 May 2016 by noderaser |
Might be time to clean out the CPU fans and reapply thermal compound? They get clogged up and break down over time, and become less efficient at conducting heat away from the chip. Also, you could try something like tthrottle to scale the BOINC computation down on the fly to maintain a specified temperature. |

Message 68973 Posted 14 Apr 2016 by noderaser |
Complete a task on your computer, and you could also post on the SETI forum for help :P |
51) Message boards : Projects : which of the projects has high RAM usage?
Message 68404 Posted 20 Mar 2016 by noderaser |
BURP (http://burp.boinc.dk/) can always use another host with high memory... Although many of the sessions are lower in the RAM department, there are some that require 8-12 GB or (theoretically) more. However, it does not have constant work as the queue depends on community submissions. |
52) Message boards : Projects : SETI might be a was of CPU time
Message 68097 Posted 3 Mar 2016 by noderaser |
I think Aliens can purposely hid their communication from us.For what purpose would they hide such communication, and what would we gain by "finding" someone who doesn't want to talk to us? While it might be nice just to know whether there's someone else out there, the better effect for Earth and humanity would be to learn from another world's mistakes and discoveries. I think SETI is in EM medium, whilst the "Aliens" are in a different mediumThe electromagnetic spectrum covers a lot of ground, SETI is only looking at Radio Frequency signals, and only a small portion of those, I believe mostly UHF. |

Message 68037 Posted 28 Feb 2016 by noderaser |
I think the general theory is that any potential ET would try and contact us via radio frequency, since we've been spamming the cosmos with RF for over 125 years. Of course, that would mean they would need to be searching in the same spectrum as well... I'm grateful that the SETI people developed BOINC to help bring the power of grid computing to other sciences, but I don't see it as particularly high-priority. Unless there's someone hanging out in our back yard that we haven't detected yet, a message from the nearest star system (Alpha Centauri) would take over four years to reach us. So, there probably wouldn't be much two-way communication until we master a means of communication that can travel faster than light. Until then, there are a lot of other problems that we need to take care of here on Earth until we make "first contact". |

Are you using an account manager? |
55) Message boards : Questions and problems : How Do I Delete A Project?
Message 67654 Posted 11 Feb 2016 by noderaser |
In the BOINC manager, did you synchronize with BAM? If you select the project on the Project List, is the "Remove" button greyed out? If not, it was attached manually and not through BAM. |
56) Message boards : Questions and problems : How Do I Delete A Project?
Message 67634 Posted 10 Feb 2016 by noderaser |
On the "My projects" page, make sure the project in question has the "Attach new hosts by default?" box unchecked, and then click the "Detach all hosts now" button. The project will be removed the next time your host synchronizes with BAM. |
57) Message boards : Questions and problems : Resource share apparently does nothing at all
Message 67526 Posted 5 Feb 2016 by noderaser |
What's the debt formula? Is it based on RAC or total credit? Credit granted per project is wildly different and not useful in inter-project debt calculations. It's based on RAC. |
58) Message boards : Promotion : Come discus BOINC at noon EST today (12/21/15) & checkout these new articles on it

Something Berkeley needs to start considering is the tax ramifications if they continue to allow an organization to use their trademarked and copyrighted software and name for profit making purposes. BOINC is open-source software, anyone can use it and derivative works for whatever purpose they see fit. There is no tax burden, as UC Berkeley does not see any of the profits. I agree that profiteering is not really in the spirit of distributed computing, but it may be a necessary evil to draw new users. |
59) Message boards : GPUs : apu+gpu
Message 67096 Posted 23 Jan 2016 by noderaser |
The CPU and GPU wont't be working on the same tasks, so there is no "speedup" that you will see on any work by utilizing the GPU as well. However, the GPU will crunch tasks more efficiently than your CPU so you will see a higher credit output. You will also have to find a project that supports your particular GPU as they are not universally supported by the BOINC projects. One good tool to find whether a project supports your specific GPU model or not is WUprop (http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/results.py) which will tell you which projects other crunchers are successfully using their GPUs for. |
60) Message boards : News : Android developer needed
Message 66982 Posted 20 Jan 2016 by noderaser |
I would say that a thread asking for people to held with the Android client, is not the appropriate place to make complaints about said client. |
