You can check WUprop to see what other people with your GPU are running: http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/results/gpu.py |
22) Message boards : BOINC Manager : 2 Minor BOINC Manager Suggestions
Message 81298 Posted 16 Sep 2017 by noderaser |
1. I recently installed BOINC on my Android phone. There's one option there I'd love to see on my Windows tablet. On the Android BOINC will suspend even when plugged into the wall outlet if the battery is not at least 90%. Great option. Before I got my Surface Pro 3, I had an Atom-based Asus tablet that used USB for charging. This was a huge problem with BOINC, because even the factory-provided charger could not make positive progress charging the battery while computing; inevitably, I would have to pause BOINC in order to use the tablet while charging or else I would drain the battery. I'm pretty sure I brought it up a few years ago, and there seemed to be some difficulties in getting charge-state information from Windows. Not sure if any of that has changed, but I am definitely a +1 for this feature even though it's not as much an issue for me anymore. |

Message 81296 Posted 16 Sep 2017 by noderaser |
If you can afford the upkeep (electricity, monitoring the system) then every host has value... Although efficiency (work completed vs. power consumption) will not be that great. I used to run a number of hosts 24/7 when I was in an apartment with provided utilities, which included a number of misfits that I'd gotten from family and friends. Since I moved into my own home some years ago I only have one host running all the time, which is my DVR. The rest of my hosts only run when I'm using them, usually only a few hours a day, except for a few exceptions where I'm trying to get a badge or something. |

Message 80436 Posted 24 Aug 2017 by noderaser |
It depends on what kind of software you are using, GPU computing will usually make the most noticeable difference to the user, CPU not as much. If performance is an issue, you can always set the preferences to suspend CPU or GPU computation (or both) when the computer is in use. |
26) Message boards : BOINC client : Boinc and USV / UPS (uninterruptible power supply) ?
Message 79849 Posted 31 Jul 2017 by noderaser |
I have found that if you install the UPS monitor software provided by the manufacturer (I have CyberPower UPSes) then it takes away management from Windows, and BOINC relies on Windows power management to detect when utility power is lost. So, for me, the choice was to either have BOINC pause computation, or have the CyberPower management software be able to shut down the computer if power was lost for an extended period of time. |

No, you only earn gridcoins for new computation following their rules. |

Sounds like an interesting idea, I think perhaps that simplifying the way users interact with their "VC" application would make it easier for new people to get involved. Even as a long-time contributor, I find the aspect of managing the projects and preferences can be somewhat tedious and time-consuming--and know that it could be a turn-off to new users who are less technically inclined or invested in their contributions. Obviously, the regular BOINC system should remain in place, but a new account manager where you pick general areas of research to contribute to really resonates with me, you don't have to worry about the minutiae of going through the project list, creating accounts, etc. If it could be paired with a very simple app, there's a chance we could get more people involved. Just install the software/app, pick your areas of focus, and be off. I would prefer to see that power used to first support the existing projects, then expand to other endeavors. I know there are some users who won't touch anything remotely related to for-profit work, so that should be an important opt-in function. But, the whole idea of VC is pretty techy-nerdy, I don't foresee it getting much farther than BOINC unless there are some marketing geniuses involved. |

Would you please clarify your affiliations with NASA, GMU, etc.? None of the links you provide here or on the site have any references back towards your project. And, as someone else has pointed out, the registrar info appears to be you and not an organization. I am eager to assist a new climate modeling project, but I want to know about who is conducting the research, and how the results will be used. |

What kind of hardware are you running this on? You'd probably have better luck in finding compatible projects, and better performance if you switched to Linux, especially if you just used the command line. |

Does one of your projects say you should have more? Something may have changed with your benchmarks when you installed the new version of BOINC, and your host is recalculating how much work it should fetch. |

Boinc runs ok on "Mac pc", so i think it's possible to have a mobile boinc client. The software development isn't the issue... It's the legal matters of whether Apple will allow the kind of access to the CPU and hardware within iOS for BOINC to run properly, which they have not provided to any other developer as of yet. It could be done by a team of enthusiasts on a jailbroken phone, but that's not really the kind of thing BOINC (or parent UC Berkeley) would do through official channels. The software is open source, if the community wants it bad enough, they will find a way to make it happen. That's how the Android client came about; NativeBOINC and AndroBOINC were two separate community-run projects long before official development started. |

Message 75651 Posted 3 Feb 2017 by noderaser |
Did you try turning WiFi on? I usually turn my phone into airplane mode with WiFi at work, because the cell signal inside our building is very weak to non-existent, and my battery drops like a rock. But, I can use WiFi for calling, texting, etc. so I don't see any loss of capabilities. The WiFI radio is a lot lower power than the cell radio, if that meeds your "needs". |
37) Message boards : Questions and problems : Mult-processor CPU Question
Message 74931 Posted 25 Dec 2016 by noderaser |
There are projects (MilkyWay and BURP come to mind) that have multi-core tasks, that will use all of your CPU cores for a single work unit. Whether or not that provides any sort of benefit to computation depends on the application and its coding; Janus has said over at BURP that with their app it's about equivalent to multiple tasks running simultaneously--no particular performance gain. Other projects might have more optimized apps, but at the very least your memory overhead should be lower since you're not running multiple replications of the same application at once. Also, it looks a little cleaner in the BOINC manager if you have a host with many cores; the task list on my 8-core i7 can get a little overwhelming if it has tasks queued up for all 8 cores, the GPU, and any non-CPU tasks. |

World Community Grid, a protein analyzing project Side note; WCG does a lot more than protein analysis, they'll take on any project from interested researchers who agree to their terms of making the results public. I started at SETI pre-BOINC as well, though once BOINC came around I quickly migrated to other projects. It's not that I don't think we should be looking up, but there are many other problems that need fixing in the short-term here on Earth. |

Message 74386 Posted 26 Nov 2016 by noderaser |
BOINC preferences only apply to the computation, there is no way for it to override the power management functions of your operating system. If the computer does not go to sleep when the lid is closed, there is a preference in the OS settings or something preventing it from going to sleep like a connected device. |

Check "Energy Saver" under your System Preferences to make sure it's not set to do that... |
