| 121) Message boards : Questions and problems : Voting for less popular platforms
Message 60559 Posted 27 Feb 2015 by noderaser |
I have an old PowerMac G4. Based on other conversations here I understand that few or no projects are handing out work units that are compatible with the Motorola G4 chip. If that changes, I'm happy to power this baby up again. I understand that its Altivec engine is quite useful for this kind of calculation, if someone cares to write for it. http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/results/delai.py?plateforme=mac_ppc&tri=projet&sort=asc&min=&max= Naturally, the project developers are going to spend their time working on the platforms which will generate the biggest return for them. However, BOINC is open source--so any interested parties can tweak or adapt it to their operating system of choice, if they have the knowledge and the time. The software run by the projects themselves can be a different story, as some are using commercial software whose licenses don't allow this. Although I doubt you'll ever see official BOINC or project support for older platforms, support for Android started with the community first before it became an official platform. And, there are plenty of other people out there who make optimized apps for various projects, and apps for OSes and hardware that aren't officially supported by the project or BOINC. So, I think your best bet is to find other people who have a common interest in seeing BOINC and project X running on hardware Y, and pool your resources.[/url] |

I'll add that you can have them in "No New Work" if they are projects that you no longer wish to compute for. You don't need to complete/return any work, just make connections to the servers to update your host and CPID info. |

Well, that was short lived. We're back to no projects listed and "Waiting for tasks" again. |

Uhm, now if you truly want rid of the account, you can always add spam into it. That's usually a good way to get rid of it. ;) Or, you could post your username and password somewhere and someone would probably take care of that part for you :P |

Message 60202 Posted 10 Feb 2015 by noderaser |
Sounds like you added the project the BAM successfully, but the default behavior is not to add the project to any hosts. If you go to the "My projects" page, you will see an option to "Attach new host by default" and icons to "Attach all hosts now" or "Detach all hosts now". You can also manage resource share, or manage hosts for just that project through this page. |

Something must have been changed in one of the recent updates, because now everything is functioning fine, and I've not done anything to the phone other than have automatic app updates turned on. |

2. Too many fights basically between different religions, occasionally over land areas. You can add in the tribal nature of many communities as well; even within adherents of a particular sect, there is violence. |

Message 60035 Posted 29 Jan 2015 by noderaser |
(I'm asking because I'm looking for good forum software) I use phpBB, though it's by no means a high-traffic board. But, the software has lots of available plugins and other resources. It's probably the most popular one out there. |

Message 59983 Posted 27 Jan 2015 by noderaser |
For kicks, I decided to uninstall/reinstall BOINC and see if anything has changed. So, I did an uninstall, restarted the phone and reinstalled BOINC. Was able to add my account manager (BAM) and saw the projects attach and download the first two tasks. A couple hours later, I check in to see what's going on and BOINC has the message "Nothing to do--Waiting for tasks" in the system notifications area, and there are no tasks or projects listed, just like before. If I try and "add project" at this point, BOINC manager will crash. |

Message 59785 Posted 18 Jan 2015 by noderaser |
I know that some projects and account managers will allow you to make locations other than the defaults (home, school, work) but I don't how know they play with the projects that don't support them... AFAIK, BOINC Manager should use the newest preferences for all projects, so as long as you pick one project (or use an account manager that supports other locations like BAM) to make your changes at then they should also apply to the projects that don't have the capability on their web management. So, it could/should work just fine, but I haven't done any experimentation myself. |

Tthrottle works great for scaling BOINC computation to maintain a set temperature for both CPU and GPU. Unfortunately, it's only available for Windows. |
| 132) Message boards : Questions and problems : How can I find out whether the graphic card is being used for computation?
Message 59248 Posted 2 Jan 2015 by noderaser |
One thing I would check, is to make sure that you have the latest drivers for both your video cards, and one of the newer versions of BOINC. |

| 134) Message boards : Questions and problems : how use 2 threads of a 1-core multi-thread processor?
Message 59218 Posted 1 Jan 2015 by noderaser |
More fine-tuning I can do with the tab "use ... % of the processor time" - I set this to 80%, in order not to have the processor work full load permanently - and it works. The processor temperature goes down a little bit (behaviour desired by me), but still both threads are active. You could also use the third-party app, Tthrottle, to adjust your BOINC load on the fly to maintain a certain maximum CPU temperature. However, you would have to test it to see if the onboard temperature sensor in your older CPU would be recognized/compatible with the software. |

A few months back, I did a factory reset on my phone in hopes that I could clear out any excess junk that was draining my battery life. Unfortunately, since then BOINC has not behaved quite like it should... Right after installing, I was able to attach my project manager and download work, but now the BOINC Manager and status say "Nothing to do--Waiting for tasks..." Even though my projects report that tasks are being completed. Examples, WUprop: http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/results.php?hostid=73794 QCN: http://qcn.stanford.edu/sensor/results.php?hostid=38685 I also notice that if I try and get into BOINC through the Apps page, the splash screen sits there for a really long time--but if I go in through the status message it will go right to the (empty) manager. If I look at the Client messages tab, everything looks fairly normal and I can see that I'm attached to projects, and suspending computation on battery, etc. but the other tabs (Tasks, Notices, Projects, even Preferences) are blank. I do have a lot of instances of the following message in my GUI messages, which I assume is the culprit but I've no idea how to resolve it: 12-29 17:28:58.793 E/BOINC_GUI(24537): I am currently on BOINC 7.4.37 and Android 4.3 on a T-Mobile Galaxy S3 SGH-T999, though I know this has happened with at least the previous version of BOINC since I'm set to auto-update and this has been going on for a couple of months. I have tried uninstalling & re-installing BOINC, to no avail. Assistance would be greatly appreciated; though I still seem to be crunching for the time being, I am spending a lot of time in areas without good cell service and would like to manually verify that work has been uploaded/downloaded when I am on WiFi. |

Message 59077 Posted 30 Dec 2014 by noderaser |
There should be a "resuming computation" line in the log that will give a hint as to why BOINC thinks it should be computing, can you post some of the lines surrounding that? Also, check to make sure that you're not getting another set of preferences from a different project or account manager that override the ones you want, and that you have cleared any local preferences. |

Message 58891 Posted 23 Dec 2014 by noderaser |
I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm not sure what you hope to gain with an "I'm leaving" message being your first post. Just because you've been a BOINC user, doesn't mean that you will have an account here at the official forums. This account is not linked to any work done, and is not created automatically. |
| 139) Message boards : Questions and problems : BOINC credit across projects not consistent?
Message 58855 Posted 22 Dec 2014 by noderaser |
It's really coming to a head with Bitcoin Utopia and the high throughput of ASIC devices, though I've yet to hear a system proposed that would be fair to all parties concerned. Someone is always going to get the short end of the stick. I wouldn't get too caught up in it, be more concerned about the work that YOU are doing to support the projects you're interested in. |

Message 58478 Posted 7 Dec 2014 by noderaser |
That's a mixed bag; the more people that switch over to SIMAP, the shorter the work will last... Very sad to see this long-standing and versatile project go, I hope that maybe there's some way (perhaps with all the extra crunchers) that they might reconsider their decision to end computing with BOINC. |
